Did anyone ever really think that Cat was Prince when they saw those images originally? I mean REALLY think it was Prince?

I never thought it was Prince for a second. It just didn't look like him, even with the face covered.

It looks like a woman.

Just sayin'...

For a quick minute I did.
It was night when I bought it, it the car, trying to look at it, by the time we got inside and to the record player, we concluded it wasn't Prince

I remember the confusion. I was a freshmen in college and didn't know WTF.

Other fans were lamenting him "turning into a drag queen" and shit. I never cared. That record totaly blew me away. A LOT of confused people thought that was Prince on the cover. What a dumb thing to worry about in retrospect. Then they got a load of Lovesexy lol.

The Stones, The New York Dolls, Bowie, Elton John...all of them played with this androgyny. And even Adam Ant, Culture Club, Thompson Twins. Poison, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and Annie Lennox were into gender bending back then. Billy Idol, Madonna and Aimee Mann to some degree. It was all you got on MTV aside from Mellencamp and Springsteen. Men dressed like women and vice versa.

So I never got what the big deal was with SoTT/Cat and why anyone would care until I realized...huh...what do you know?

all of ^^^those artists^^^ I listed were WHITE, weren't they?

I appreciate it for how much harder it was to pull off back then - film and double exposures.

Nowadays it's just 2 Photoshop layers with some filters applied but, as an artist (then and now), I recall staring it a lot for inspiration. A lot of good photography came out of this period.

to wit

I
t's all quite pretty IMO.

Not sure what was up with them Lovesexy clothes and outfits but I dig ^^^this gallery^^^.

Quick, weird question though:

Did Prince ever require glasses (reading or otherwise) or was it just a fashion choice? Not sure if he wore contact lenses or ever had an issue with his eyesight but I dunno

Maybe Bart can chime in and tell me to google some shit and call me a lazy dumb dumb but does anyone really know? Prince was wearing eye glasses during the Rave period as well.

Yep, there are certain cultural issues some groups have more or less with gender.

Grace Jones, had a wonderful career, outside of the traditional black music scene.

Prince was a blend and very attractive human, some people got it others didn't

That cover (If I Was Your Girlfriend) I always thought would have worked better for the SOTT cover, it was very contimplative.

Play In The Sunshine

(Play) (Play) (Play) {fade in}
Ooh doggie!
We wanna play in the sunshine, we wanna be free
Without the help of a margarita or exstacy
We wanna kick like we used 2, sign up on the dotted line
We're gonna dance every dance like it's gonna be the last time

We got 2 play in the sunshine, turn all the lights up 2 10
I wanna meet U (meet U) and kiss U (kiss U)
And love U (love U) and miss U (miss U)
Do it all over again, do it all over again

We're gonna play in the sunshine, we're gonna get over
I'm feelin' kind of lucky 2night, I'm gonna find my 4-leaf clover
Before my life is done
Some way (some way), some how (some how) I'm gonna have fun

Play in the sunshine

We gonna love all our enemies 'til the gorilla falls off the wall
We're gonna rock him (Rock him)
We're gonna roll him (Roll him)
We're gonna teach him that love will make him tall (So tall)

Aah, pop goes the music when the big white rabbit begin 2 talk
And the color green will make your best friend leave ya (Walk)
It'll make them do "The Walk," but that's cool (That's cool)
Cuz one day (one day), every day (every day) will be a yellow day, let's play

(Play in the sunshine, we're gonna get over) Over
I'm feelin' kind of lucky 2night, I'm gonna find my 4-leaf clover
(Before my life is done) Before my life is done
Some way (some way), some how (some how) I'm gonna have fun

(Play) No!
Now get loose
Play! {x8}

We're gonna play in the sunshine, we're gonna get over
I'm feelin' kind of lucky 2night, I'm gonna find my 4-leaf clover
Before my life is done
I'm gonna, some way, some how, have fun

(Play in the sunshine, we're gonna get over)
(I'm feelin' kind of lucky 2night, I'm gonna find my 4-leaf clover)
Before my life is done!
Some way, some how, I just got 2 have fun!

(Play) (Play)
(Play) No! {x3}
(Come on, play) No!
(Play) No!
(Play play play) Yeah!

Drummer, do your thing
Drummer, drummer, do your thing
Drummer, drummer, drummer
Can I get some of that? (Yeah yeah)
Wait a minute

Let's get out of here (Yeah)
(La la la la la, la la la) {x5}

We're not afraid 2 (Play in the sunshine)

An underrated gem.

Love this song both live and on record. Wish so badly he would've brought this back just once after this tour. I know he would do the call and responses from the song in concert. Another appreciation note on this one is drum programming mixed with live drums. Pure Prince!

DRS: I like every song on the album. I think “Play In The Sunshine” was a cool song even though it wasn’t released as a single.

SR: That was one of those songs that we knocked off very quickly. Prince did what most people do. When he would conceive of an album there were core songs that were the heart and the skeleton of the album. “Purple Rain” was a core song on the album Purple Rain, and of course “Sign O’ The Times” was one of the fundamental songs for that album. So when we would sequence a record sometimes we’d take our core songs and a few other tracks and we would sequence them together just to hear how the album was going to sound. If there was something missing, if there needed to be a song that would transition between two of the core or the more important songs, Prince would actually write something specifically to serve in the sequence. So in that sense there were the most important songs and then there were the album cuts–the things that were almost interludes on the record. So the songs were never intended to be singles or even have any important message. That’s what “Play In The Sunshine” was; it was just a bridge to get us out of “Sign O’ The Times” and into the rest of the record. “Slow Love” was another one of those…that was an old one from the vault.

RUUD SCHOUTEN

Susan Rogers in Rotterdam on June 29, 1987, while on the “Sign ‘o the Times” tour.

There was an entire film that got shit canned if I remember right that forced Prince to re-record most of the show on his sound stage. There's also "For Those of You On Valium" which is easy to find and great.

Agree with several others that this was truly my man's artistic peak and found him at his most prolific. REAL bummed the States never got the tour. I remember going to the theater to see the movie and SO MANY folks were bummed it was a concert movie (not me). So many in the audience were expecting PR2 or something and I was baffled. As a fan, I went to go see Prince's take on Stop Making Sense and knew it was a concert film but, man, a lot of people were pissed.

Released in April 1987, SIGN ‘O’ THE TIMES was previewed two month earlier by the single of the same name. Written, recorded and mixed in a single day, I’d love to know the date so I could look up the newspapers to see what inspired it.

One of the most captivating, not to mention unorthodox concert intro ever, SIGN ‘O’ THE TIMES was performed nightly on the highly conceptual world tour that hit the road in May. Almost eerie on stage, it wasn’t exactly a safe choice for a single either. But the music world seemed fascinated by the rare glimpse into the Prince politic and it raced up the charts.

15 SIGN ‘O’ THE TIMES (3:42)
Produced, Arranged, Composed and Performed by Prince
Created and Mixed at Paisley Park, Sunset Sound and Dierks Studio Mobile Trucks
Engineered by Susan Rogers, Coke Johnson and Prince
Published by Controversy Music, administered by WB Music Corp. ASCAP
From SIGN ‘O’ THE TIMES

13 LA, LA, LA, HE, HE, HEE (3:21)
Produced, Arranged, Composed and Performed by Prince
Lyrics co-written by Sheena Easton
Published by Controversy Music, administered by WB Music Corp./Sticky Black Publishing ASCAP
B-side of “SIGN ‘O’ THE TIMES”

(Dares must have been in the air when Easton was around because their other collaboration, LA, LA, LA, HE, HE, HEE, resulted from Prince being asked to prove he could indeed get a full song out of those simple syllables.)
