Wow, the full song seems like it’s pretty much there already in 1979. The quality doesn’t sound very good though.

I’m listening to this on my Bluetooth speaker. So I can’t really judge the sound quality. But it sounds fine to my ears coming from this little speaker. I’ll try my headphones later

But the full song is almost there. I made a prediction that the leadline/hook/whatever it’s called wouldn’t be there, and it isn’t. But chord progression and lyrics is basically there. No guitar solo. But still awesome to hear a 1979 Prince sing a (what we perceived to be a) 1986 Prince track
Cool drum work. Its raw.

I see why for the finished song, he ditched the “but I’ll try.”

Ok the sound is so clear. I love the audio here!

A year ago, “Wouldn’t You Love To Love Me” came out and that sounds like shite. That was recorded in ‘81. This obviously ‘79. This gives me hope for the earlier recordings

didn't hear it yet, but that's exactly what I expected

in fact when the SOTT album came out for the first time listenting to ICNTTPOYM, it immediately reminded of When U where mine, I even told this to some of my friends and most didn't really agree. back then I didn't know it was from the same era though. now it all makes sense. definitley excited to hear it!

Has anyone tried unplugging the United States and plugging it back in?

Very nice! I prefer the "Sign" version, but still great to hear. So looking forward to the SDE.

Interesting the hear him sing in his normal (none falsetto) voice in 1979.

"I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (1979 Version)" was recorded at Hollywood Sound Recorders, Studio A on May 23, 1979, and engineered by Bob Mockler. It is the oldest recording in the Super Deluxe Edition collection, dating back to sessions for Prince's self-titled 1979 album. Its basic elements are minimal: live drums and claps, bass, guitar, synth, and nine layers of Prince's voice.

.

The track was retrieved from the vault in June 1986 and re-recorded, with Prince adding a solo and updating the sound, and that new version was given a prominent place on the unreleased Dream Factory and Crystal Ball collections before finally being released on Sign 0' The Times.

It's cool. I like it but how many times will I listen to it when the 1987 version is sublime?

Love the "but I'll try" moments at the end. Changes the entire vibe of the song when you consider how the story ends in the 86 version.

I totally agree. I think it ends the story perfectly and gives the song a lovely kiss off. Rock 'n roll, man. Pity he dropped it later on, but hey, there's not too much wrong with the briliant version we got.

Imagine having a song like this in your "back pocket" and NOT putting it on Prince...or Dirty Mind...or Controversy...or Purple Rain...or Around The World In A Day...or Parade...???

Wow.
