CBS’ ‘Grammy Salute to Prince’ Tops ‘Empire’ Series Finale – and Everything Else – in Key Demo Ratings

CBS/Fox

The “Grammy Salute to Prince” on CBS beat the “Empire” series finale (and everything else) in Tuesday’s primetime ratings among adults 18-49.

The Prince tribute actually finished second in terms of total viewers, ranking only behind its own lead-in, an “NCIS” rerun. CBS won the night outright.

“Empire” concluded to a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49, which is the key demographic for primetime entertainment advertisers, and just under 3 million total viewers.

CBS was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 6.9 million, according to preliminary numbers. After the “NCIS” repeat, the Grammys special from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. averaged a 1.0 and 6.5 million viewers.

NBC and Fox tied for second in ratings, both with a 0.6/3. NBC, which aired all reruns, was second in total viewers with 3.4 million viewers. Fox was third in viewers with 2.8 million.

For Fox, following a rerun, the “Empire” finale drew a 0.8 and 2.9 million viewers.

Univision was fourth in ratings with a 0.5/2 and fifth in viewers with 1.6 million.

ABC was fifth in ratings with a 0.4/2 and fourth in viewers with 2.4 million. Following repeats, “For Life” at 10 got a 0.4 and 2.2 million viewers.

I don't get why they re-ran the Usher segment.

.

I don't understand was it taped as part of this show and shown during the Grammy's or did they just use a clip form the Grammy night?

Jimmy and Terry were MD’s along with the Sheila and they were only on stage when The Time was performing.

Were they really though? Or was that just honorary title? They really were the narrators of the montages (or at least Jimmy was).

Unless I missed an ad, it was promoted as such. Honorary MD sounds off to me lol

Usher's brilliant Prince(r.i.p.) tribute performance was during the original live Grammy broadcast. Rebroadcast specifically for Prince's (r.i.p.) high rated Grammy tribute which was filmed merely a couple of days later.

Yes I understand that. I'm saying maybe it was "honorary" because we never saw them do anything other than perform with the Time.

.

When they've MD's other stuff theyve been on stage with the band.

I will only be completely satisfied with that tribute when one thing happens.

When John Stephens (Legend) is tied up in front of a line of angry fans, and then is slapped by each fan until he screams "I'm not Prince, I never will be, and I'm sorry I that I ever thought I was."

When that occurs, it will have been the perfect tribute.

I realized Sheila, the Time, and the Revolution aren't much without Prince. The Time use the same arrangements and routines from '81 to '84. Sheila just copies everything Prince did. And the Revolution lacked energy and seemed lost without him. As bland as some of the younger artists were, at least, they tried to make his songs their own, they just lacked the musical ability to do it justice.

Beck, Foo Fighters, and EWF were the best of the night.

This comment is kind of ridiculous. Esp if you are going to contrast it to Beck's performance.

.

.

He literally stood there and strummed an acoustic guitar while SHEILA's BACKING band played the song.

.

.

He looked like David Spade in a beige Prince suit, which was kind of cute, but how you are going to say that actually added something to the performance vs. Wendy makes no sense.

.

.

I do agree that the Revolution seemed a little flat compared to when I've seen them in person, but Wendy actually did much better on the guitar solos this time, probably on purpose.

.

.

And Sheila doesn't copy Prince, she actually changes the arrangements, using nods to the classic concerts but adds her own extra, more jazzy elements to them with additional passing chords and subtle things.

.

.

The Time of course is going to do the classic arragnements given this is the original 7 who amost never are together anymore. And they have always performed without Prince, so even though he trained them, even he was "scared" of them live as is well documented.

I was probably a little too harsh with my criticism. The Revolution sounded flat on Delirious but that could've been Maya Rudolph and her assistant. Purple Rain started off a little weak, but Wendy's guitar solo lifted the performance to where it should have been at the start. She had the single best performance of the night in terms of musicianship.

The Time will always gives a great performance. I'm just a little tired of the same schtick. At least, they got to perform Cool.

Sheila also had great energy. I just feel like I saw the same performance at the BET tribute.

Beck wasn't mindblowing, but his vocals perfectly fit the arrangement of the song and you could tell the audience was feeling it more than most of the other acts. Like I said, he picked the perfect song for him.

I think the problem stems from using a backing band playing Prince's classic arrangement's. It seemed to be up to individual artists to fit in or not. I assume the backing band was used for quality control and to make the music was played right.

To Miguel, if you are going to try to immitate Prince, then commit 150% to it. Half assing it just makes you stupid. You could tell he was thinking, " Am I pulling this off or no?" Even at the end when Sheila took him by the shoulder and walked across the stage with authority, he looked like her embarrassed nephew. He had zero improvisational skills and didn't know the words to Baby I'm A Star.

I stand by my St Vincent comment. She needs to expand her guitar skills and stage charisma. That cooler than thou act ainting cut it.

St. Vincent can't dance, but the stilted robotic stage thing is part of the stage character she does. It's a Klaus Nomi, Bowie thing. She's pretty commited to it so it was a mismatch. If they had given her choreography from The Family, it would have made more sense. Someone was making choices that weren't benefitting the artists combined with the songs.

HER is incredibly talented, and to me, the legacy of Prince is on full display with her, but if you can't scream, or turn it into Gospel at least, don't do Beautiful Ones.

Agree about Beck. I cringed with his Paisley Park and live covers but he was a standout.

Seeing Susanah Hoff's do Manic Monday just reminded me of who else wasn't there and should have been. They need to stop trying to make Prince more appealing to some mystery audience that wants to see Common and do the real damn tribute while people are still alive.

There were very few moments that felt like they were even thinking about Prince.

I love the Revolution (seen them with Prince and without several times).

AND I love the song Mountains

.

.

But now I can see why they dind't televise this.

.

.

It really needed Eric and Matt Blistan for the horn parts. Fink was playing it on the synth but you could barely hear it.

.

.

You can also see why Sheila augmented the house band with at least 3 female BG singers (sometimes 4 with her). It really added ot the vocals. This sounded thin in comparison.

.

.

I also think the oriignal has at least 2 rhythm guitars and this seemed like it was missing something.

.

.

Also they didn't do the weird turnaround at the end which is part of the song's signature.

Sheila(whom I saw perform live several times) has been wearing outfits similar to this design in different colors just like Prince(r.i.p.) for a while now. I think she looks great in them. They were always the same size. Stacia I'm sure had no problems whatsoever with the tiny measurements.

Huh? Sheila used to be little back in the day, but she didn't look that little to me last night. I mean it's what happens with age, but she wasn't no little thing last night.

And that 2nd slide looked like she hit her head. She may want to lay off on the slides, she's gonna break a hip.

I still would have aired it in place of usher or st vincent etc...my issue is also the sound on this show like usual award shows have terrible sound so I can't blame the Revolution cause I have heard them do this solo many times and it works better there was huge echoes and space going on here, and also love the song odd choice for this show. I would have let them do computer blue and have the foos take darling Nikki since the groups were working in unison or honestly sometimes it snows in April huge miss not having that on the show, I mean my only thought of why they didn't do that song here on this show was the fear it would overshadow purple Rain, cause sometimes it snows with the revolution would have brought that place down.

I thought that was Cat dancing and singing background throughout the whole show but reading the credits, it was someone I have never heard of. I had assumed Sheila would gather several former Prince band members but most of them were not associated with Prince at all. This makes the fact that she didn't want to include the Revolution even more upsetting.

I'm really glad that so many young artists I've never heard of could come together in order to pose on stage to backing tracks, hold guitars they can't play, and celebrate Sheila E. It's a beautiful thing.

Was nice to see The Time and The Revolution though. What the hell happened to Jimmy Jam?! Also, I hate to say it but Mavis' voice is gone.
