Prince – The 25 best live bootlegs!

Folks - Just a reminder..............

NO TROLL THREADS! NO SOLICITING FOR BOOTLEGS! Discussion is fine, so long as the bootleg is not being promoted e.g. pre-release; requests/offers to share or copy, and links to download or bootleg sites are not. Posting Prince and associated artist videos from sites such as YouTube is also not allowed. Posts of this nature will be deleted and repeat offenders will be first warned, and then banned. Troll threads, fake tracklists, and attention seeking rumor threads will be also be swiftly dealt with. These rules are strictly enforced!

**************

Introduction

Bootlegs and Prince. An unhappy marriage. Prince is one of the most bootlegged artists of all time. Ample reason to dive into the world of Prince bootlegs and to compile a ‘must have’ list. This article holds the ultimate top 25, based on 5 different lists.

I don't understand why so many audience recordings are on the list. I have never understood why people like audience recordings. They are better than nothing, but a soundboard is always better than an audience recording in my opinion. I would love to get a list of the top 25 soundboards.

Fantastic article. Thank you to the authors for compiling this list.

I had not previously seen that note Prince wrote to bootleggers. I've never sold any bootlegs but I have bought them in the past, and although I don't regret collecting his stuff I do feel a bit guilty now. It was evidently something that bothered him.

Great list.

But I´m surprised to see so many bootlegs on this list that were legit releases, albeit in a different formats (for example the Syracuse concert, or the Lovesexy Dortmund concert, and so on).

And I expected to see the Bataclan 2002 aftershow, which had, in my opinion, an amazing setlist and spectacular renditions, but hey, still a great list.

It´s funny that they list What Did I Do (1987, Le New Morning), and then, when they discuss the bootleg, call it Wasn´t My Faith ( which should actually be "Was it my face?" ).....this is what the song used to be called back in those old bootleg days.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

There are some really good audience sourced shows out there. The Indigo Power Trio aftershow is amazing. headbang

Maybe eventually until the soundboard comes out, just listen to the audience one, I know they don't have good quality tho.

Hey, was this one actually released? ... I own the audience recording which is pretty good already, but mixed with a SB have to be very nice. Was this ever released by any known label, or just circulates a fan release?

Soundboard is great to clearly hear the details of the sound, but i love audience recordings because soundboards does not capture the mood and reaction of people in the room. When i listen for example La Cigale gig from 2009 in Paris, it gives me chill because of that!

Sabotage recently released this version as an upgrade to the audience recording. It seems that they took the new fan released soundboard and augmented their audience recording with it and got (I think) good results smile

Nice list. And I thought his cover of Africa Talks to You "The Asphalt Jungle" was a warm up / rehearsal for the August 1983 First Ave concert, but I saw it wasn't on the set list so I just looked it up and that was from 1984. Interesting. That's the confusion I get from downloading bootlegs and sometimes having the connection drop out, so I get like half a show here, part of a show there, etc. Imagine if somebody started officially releasing these songs for us to hear, complete, and in good audio quality. Wouldn't that be amazing? wink

Agreed - the 2009 Cigale or Monte Carlo gigs are fantastic audiences - the 2004 Fillmore shows are incredible also - worth checking out if you are dubious about audience recordings. It's a bit of a jump at first, but once you're in...
