speaking to a long time friend & absolute hard core P fan this week & she shocked me! She no longer listens to much of P if at all anymore. She still adores him etc BUT , like myself is more into new music. I was surprised as P is still a part of my weekly listening BUT being honest since his passing I too have moved far & wide in discovering so much new, amazing music / artists.

Intersted to hear if anyone else has eased off the purple train & moved to pastures new? Likewise interested to know how often do you listen to him, daily, weekly rarely, not at all! etc.

No, his music makes up probably 85% - 90% of my listening. And I'm surprised, but that percent didn't change right after his passing, either.

I think it's because the way I deal with stuff like this is to constantly thank God that someone was here, and that I got to enjoy their presence in some way or another.

I listen to Prince daily.

I do wish there was new music that I liked, but I rarely find anything that entertains me. i compare everything to Prince and there isn't anyone I've found that can make music like he did. And I don't just mean the melodies, etc. For me, the production is addicting and if there's someone out there who can layer music like he did, I haven't found them yet.

Prince will always be a large chunk of my listening time. But I'm into so many other genres and always discovering and re-discovering music.

There are periods where I'm listening to Prince music 80% and other periods where it is 20%

Clearly, waaaay much less.

It's a no-brainer for me:

1/ I've been listening to Prince for 30 years, I have thousands of Prince tracks studio and live, official and bootleg, I know most of it by heart. At some point it's great every once in a while to spend an hour with an old album you love, but one gets tired of listening to the same stuff over and over.

2/ My tastes and my music collection keep expanding. I had about 200 albums when I moved from cassettes to CD in 1995. I had about 800 albums when I moved from CD to digital in 2006. Now thanks to a certain peer-to-peer network I have over 5000 albums and even more to listen to. Less time for Prince, too much great stuff to listen to.

3/ Consequently my listening habits have progressively changed. Even if I still trip obsessively on an album here and there, I listen to one or 2 new albums a day on average (I work mostly from home, so I have lots of time for music) and I have so much stuff that I don't listen to each album half as often as I did when I had much less choice.

4/ Prince is gone. No matter new bootlegs or what comes out of the vault the excitement of a new Prince album, of seeing what he'd do next and diving into each new record is gone forever

I still listen to Prince quite regularly, though, and probably always will, but it's nothing like it used to.

Yes, I do listen to Prince's music less often. Not because I don't still love it, I do, but because it makes me sad sometimes. I used to listen to his music daily and now it's more weekly. I love my entire collection of Prince music and he is still the GOAT for me, but I find myself getting melancholy at times, so I limit it.

prince was, to me, always about the next thing. i'll always go back and listen to it all, but without something new coming regularly, i'm not as immersed as i was. the estate's release strategy is not helping in this regard. i really just want some stuff i've never heard before...fuck a bunch of picture books, reissues and purple vinyl. i'm done with sympathy purchases trying to keep them afloat.

Way less - almost not at all. I used to be excited about the next album or song from Prince and listened with anticipation. I don't play his music, I can't. I do watch the occasional video posted on youtube or facebook as I'm scrolling through those sites. I buy the "new" stuff from the estate and don't play it either. I not only don't listen to Prince I don't really listed to any recorded music anymore. I do still go to tons of live shows and really enjoy live music of any kind from theatres and classical to country and R&B. Usually I'll buy the CD after the show and never play it. Its kinda depressing actually.

In a way you're lucky, you're suddenly having to swallow 20 years of Prince the same way I had to swallow a little more than a decade when I began. In a way I envy those kids who just become fans now. Of course not in the sense that they missed it when it happened, but in the sense that everything is new to them and while it was impressive for me to have to absord a decade of Prince when I became a fan, I can't imagine how it must feel to have to absorb 40 years of Prince now. The catalogue, both releases and bootleg, is so damn gigantic!!

I have listened even less since he died. I spend far more time reading about Prince than actually listening to his music. I have heard all his albums so many times that I can't really listen to them much anymore. So I listen to other musicians these days mostly. Still grateful for all the music Prince gave us though!

After he passed I couldn't bring myself to listen to anything by him. I was a die hard fan up until the last few years that he was alive- I just couldn't deal with the crap that he pulled anymore such as saying a new album was coming out but then it never showed (the Tamar fiasco, etc.). I didn't even buy his last four albums of new music when they were released. I did buy H&R 1, 2 and AOA after he died but still have not bought or even listened to 3rd Eye. I just am not a fan of music featuring loud guitar work. Over the months after he died I did slowly start to listen to the music again and am now able to enjoy it, but it still comes with a twinge of sadness attached to it. Like someone stated above- the thrill of seeing what he would do, where he would show up on an award show, etc., each time a new album of new music was released is gone. But I will never stop loving the music!

Honestly, I've had instances where I personally didn't want to play his music because it made me very sad to think about him not being here with us.

But his music started finding me, with frequency, in places where I had no choice but to listen and my natural love for it, eased the pain.

Now my listening levels are back to normal and then some. Hell, a couple of weeks ago, me and about 1500 other Prince fans were rocking out watching Purple Rain at the Redford Theater in Detroit. My husband laughed his ass off when I ordered tickets because my Purple Rain 20th Anniversary Two Disc Special Edition DVD set was sitting within arms reach on the wall next to me. I paid him no mind and had a freaking ball. I made some new friends that I'll be seeing at some other local Prince fan gatherings this summer and I may even finally go to Paisley Park.
