Which is exaclty why my response is direct..and not towards the thread as a whole.

He was a pure seventies creature. The cover is true to who he once was.
Half-Gold, Half Faded Oranges, thankfully not rasta.
I bet the choice was already set, so I'm pretty sure
you're trashing Prince's own choice. That typo is Letraset® galore.
The embossed Prince handwriting is the nicest autograph.

Cool wallpaper. Looks like a mattress made of barb wires.
This is Prince coming up with the idea of the Dirty Mind cover background.
Not just a selfie. Trash it all you want. Ignore the perfect font.

Nah, that's an ol'school 70's Breuer Cesca wicker chair pattern. They were quite popular, because I remember them in a lot of my friends and family's homes.

Eye NO where the pattern is coming from, but thanks for the nod to memorabilia.

With a correct colour balance there would be no orange on this photo. His jumper is red.

Photo balanced (the lower half is still "gold plated").

Still looks orange to me.
Maybe you have tomatopia.

Or maybe I have scanned thousands of old photos (negatives, slides and prints) and done colour correction on most of them so I can say from experience that the way this looks now, his jumper was actually red and the background pattern is either white or much closer to white than to yellow.

I just color-corrected the photo. His shirt is still kind of orange-ish, like a burnt orange. The background latticework is an off-white. The picture looks much better now. You can tell from his complexion that the corrected version is the right version. However, the bottom half of the cover (with the title and embossed autograph) looks washed out. It's no longer gold.

.

How do I upload it to the forum? I clicked the button for "insert/edit" image, but it's asking for a URL rather than letting me choose a photo on my harddrive. Is that against the rules?

You actually think the golden, lower part of the cover was part of the original photo? biggrin Of course it will no longer look gold if you perform a colour correction on it too, not just on the old photo, but I thought that would be obvious...

.
Besides, you can't really do proper colour correction on this file because it's way too faded. The best colour correction results can only be achieved during scanning of the original negative or slide (and I mean using a dedicated film scanner and a decent software such as VueScan Pro), not afterwards.

I bet if you've done some correction and the jumper still looks orange-ish then the skin tone will look yellowish too.

This looks like a very 70's color palette.Remember harvest gold, avocado and colors used in 70's kitchens?
The background pattern looks like a wallpaper pattern scaled up to be a supergraphic.

Of course I don't think the lower half of the book cover was part of the original photo... And of course I know that if you color correct the photo all of it (top and bottom) will be affected. I'm not an idiot. I wasn't remotely surprised by the fact that the bottom looked washed out -- I was simply noting the results of my edit.

.

And of course a color correction of a copy won't be as good as a color correction of the original. Neverthless, my correction turned out pretty good. Far from perfect, but good. His skin isn't yellow. His complexion is not perfect, but it has a far more nactual hue than the photo posted above. His jumper is more reddish, but it's still not a pure red. It may even be closer to red than orange, but it's still not a pure red.

This is the only book about Prince that truly matters. Not Mayte's book, not former girlfriends, musicians, hairdressers, janitors making their come up off of a dead man's 40 years of hard work, sacrifice, pain, creativity, musicality and musicianship as a teenager to his death. This is the first book since Prince's death that I will buy.

Yes Indeed!! Thank you! So true!! Love & Peace.

It's that oh-so-popular "rusty orange" color that was pretty big in the 70's. I had a couple of "velour" (remember that material??) shirts with that color in them when I was a kid biggrin

So how do we know this is legit? Just Dr. Funkenberry?

From penguinrandomhouse.com

'...The book is told in four parts. The first is composed of the memoir he was writing before his tragic death, pages that brings us into Prince’s childhood world through his own lyrical prose. The second part takes us into Prince’s early years as a musician, before his first album released, through a scrapbook of Prince’s writing and photos. The third section shows us Prince’s evolution through candid images that take us up to the cusp of his greatest achievement, which we see in the book’s fourth section: his original handwritten treatment for Purple Rain—the final stage in Prince’s self-creation, as he retells the autobiography we’ve seen in the first three parts as a heroic journey.'

So, it seems from this description that only the first part of the book was personally written by Prince, and it covers just his childhood years. The rest is pieces of his writing and photos pulled together to complete the book which ends at Purple Rain.

That night in March 2016 at a press conference to a packed room at Avenue nightclub in New York City’s Meatpacking District, Prince(r.i.p.) announced the title of his memoir will be The Beautiful Ones. The HIGHLY anticipated memoir barely a month before his unexpected transitioning was described as "an unconventional and poetic journey through his life and creative work – from the family that shaped him and the people, places, and ideas that fired his creative imagination.

The late,great Prince(r.i.p.) said

“We’re starting right at the beginning — my first memory — and HOPEFULLY eek we can move all the way to the Super Bowl,”

cry

Prince(r.i.p). who played the SuperBowl halftime show in 2007, told a small crowd at a mini concert to celebrate news of the book in March 2016 that was first posted here at The Org.

So sad that he did not get to the Super Bowl with his own writing. Reading his words and descriptions about his childhood will be wonderful though.
