at that time, the rivalry was too hot, mj had already put mj in a tight spot with the james performance and now he has the nuts to ask to sing next to him? not only that, but with mj's producer doing the work, who do you think is gonna get the better end of that deal? come on, sure they made Prince look like an ass but from what I hear, the watw fiasco was bullshit anyways. prince also never liked to make a show of his charity work, another thing that he and michael were diametric opposites on.

It's funny how in death whose considered the angel now.

it's funny how i never said he's an angel, but kissing the public's ass wasn't necessary, being a phoney wasn't necessary. He knew what Mike was up to, same as the JB thing, same as the Bad song duo idea, mike was trying to show him up on his court, with his people, he learned after the first time not to fall for it. Let's say he shows up, they have his vocal part and it's in falseto making him look like a dork, or it's in MJ's range, again making him look like a dork, then michael starts dancing in front of him, then prince does a gymnastics move and then they fight like school kids, i could see it.

That WHOLE MJ/JB thing had SET UP written ALL over it. It was so obviously planned. Even back then MJ was worried Prince would take his crown.. I still felt so bad for Prince(r.i.p.). JB actually NEVER liked him.

Alot of people were not there, and alot werent part of the "Band Aid" project and We are the World was nothing more than an answer to that. They wanted an "american version" to the British version and thats why you got what you got, it also was a hurried thing, get here now etc...even though Bob Geldof rushed with Band Aid, he and Midge Ure (the writer) put a little more time into it, though the recording and video shoot all had to be done in one shot. Was never crazy about We are the World even then something about it always was fishy, maybe it was Kenny Rogers and Ken Kragen that made me think that.

I agree. I remember this well.

I think it was American Music Awards when Lionel Ritchie thought Prince and his bodyguard was very 'outrageous' when Prince accept award and didn't say that much during the first award accepted just said Thank you and walked off the stage left the presenters somewhat bemused, and when Prince won another award he bought up the Revolution and Wendy did the speech and they left again and that when the camera also show Smokey Robinson's puzzled face lol.

Still get the giggles when I see the video on Youtube. But glad Lionel still show respect toward Prince even though they rarely crossed paths.

Why feel bad? Look at what Prince became after that ordeal. It hardly impeded his progress as an artist or a superstar.

Honestly, the idea that Mike was trying to make Prince look bad at the JB show is just speculation. He very well could have but based on what happened, there's little in the way of evidence to confirm that as a fact.

For that matter, I heard that the reason P "bombed" onstage was because he was drunk or was nervous and caught off guard (the likely answer). Unless MJ knew that P wasn't fit to be onstage, then I can't see how he was being malicious. As for JB, I highly doubt he was in on whatever scheme Mike may have cooked up.

Prince's dancing was in it's developemental stage, it worked out, susan rogers said he played the tape all the time, presumably to spurn him on to greater heights. Both were competitive with each other, for Prince's part, there is the story of him beating mike at ping pong and strutting like a rooster afterwards, saying, "he played like hellen keller". MJ had to have known prince was in the audience, knew that he was his main rival, put him on the spot, he didn't have any of the moves he'd have just 3 short years later, it was a disaster and mj enjoyed it. For what it's worth, both influenced the other, someone said cool and mountains were mj influenced, I always thought so too, in mountains there's a horn riff that's from off the wall, on mj's bad, he'd coopted Prince's chordal style, or rather, he directed whoever he was working with to use a Prince sound. Mj had it in for Prince, Quincy jones said there was "drama mama, which Michael loved".

Mj had it in for Prince, Quincy jones said there was "drama mama, which Michael loved".

I have a hard time believing the things Quincy says these days, especially when from what I've heard, lived for drama, himself.

If MJ really did that then I can't blame Prince for no-showing WATW and holding a grudge but we know he no-showed for another reason entirely. He wasn't in control; even regarding the JB show, I think that's a reason why he flopped onstage. The PR Sessions book even speculates this to be so. Personally, I thought P did all right, destroying part of the set notwithstanding.

Anyway, as far as WATW goes, in retrospect I definitely can't see someone like P fitting in that circle. Talent-wise, star power-wise, he most certainly belonged but his persona didn't mesh with the other names present. Prince was a mysterious, elusive figure and him attending the WATW recording would have diminished that aura he possessed. That and that song just did not fit his bad boy image. Prince was arrogant and could be a jerk but he wasn't a bad person, however, at the time that was definitely a bad look for him and the damage control made him look even worse. The song he contributed seemed more like an attempt to calm the backlash than an actual act of kindness.

I know a lot of people don't like WATW and have their suspicions about the project but I got nothing against the artists who participated. They did their parts. The song certainly ain't getting any spins from me but I appreciate the moment that it was.

Lastly, I do not hear any MJ in "Mountains" and certainly not in "Cool". The 2 did influence one another but I don't hear an MJ influence there.

Many people paint Lionel as a sellout because he made AC/AC-oriented music and ballads, a notion I've always disagreed with. Not saying that I'm in love with all of his slower songs but the man is one of the most versatile artists out there. I defy anyone to give a list of artists with a voice that's compatible with funk, R&B, pop, AC, country and reggae. L was a great songwriter as well and knew his way round the keys and IIRC could also play the trumpet (or was it sax? Both?).

Lionel is without a doubt a one of a kind talent and a legend. He helped to make the 80's the 80's (Can't Slow Down is a quintessential album of that decade and his solo debut is an overlooked gem) and in general, is just a likable dude. Cheating on his wife aside, L just always came off as your chill, upbeat uncle who at worst, could be a little cheesy but was smoooooth and charismatic all the same.

Yeah funk was phrasing out in the mid-80s and Lionel had to do something and to basically revent himself and to live in lavish life. So he show his diversity music talent to the world that helped him stay revelant for many years. What is crazy is that people called Lionel sellout back then just because he wanted to do music beyond funk/R&B but yeah many R&B and rappers are begging to sell out nowadays especially the minute they want to be in the industry from Cardi B to Chance the Rapper and Travis Scott they are going into mainstream movies and using their songs in mainstream commerical. Crossover is where the dollars it always been.

Really? Listen to Shake Your Body Down to the Ground (the full album version) - Prince definetly incorporated some of the percussion into Cool. Not a stretch either, especially how after Mike died, Prince would play it in concert.

A certain kind of mellow.

Really? Listen to Shake Your Body Down to the Ground (the full album version)

The influence for the chorus on Shake Your Body was from the long version of Marvin Gaye's Got To Give It Up. Randy Jackson was on Questlove Supreme in October 2018 and he talked about The Jacksons' career. Randy mentioned that the rhythm of Shake Your Body came from the Teddy Pendergrass song Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose. Randy also said that at the time Mike was a big fan of the light rock bands America & Bread and would play their records a lot. I guess that explains a few of Janet's songs like Let's Wait Awhile. razz

In Mountains, the horn riff, just that part, sounded like don't stop til you get enough's horn riff, nothing big but it was there. those three notes. and cool, had a rhythm, from don't stop, I always thought Prince was listening and following his comp. even though in an early interview from 78 he expressed some distaste at being compared to Michael Jackson. Oddly, QJ was approached to work with Prince early on wasn't he?

WATW? Worth it for the Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen 'duet'. Words fail me when i see/hear that. MJ had little ego in it too. Seeing as he wrote it, he hardly was in it. So that was kind of ok by him. Humble. I dug that.

And yes I do wish Prince was stood next to Sheila instead of out dicking Madonna that night. Allegedly.. or so i read somewhere sometime in the past. I dunno, Would have been kind of cool, Spilt milk. Not crying.

it wouldn't have worked anyway, prince didn't want any producer period, i think he had to have a co on the first album but he wanted to be his own guy from the gitgo.

I think Prince made the right choice.

Be that as it may, it was still a way for P to save face and say he contributed after no-showing the session.

As for WATW itself, I appreciate it for bringing awareness to the starvation going on in Africa. That and being the historical gathering of stars it was. Hasn't been seen before or since.

It was seen before. You ever hear of Band Aid? U2, George Michael, The Police, Bob Geldof, Boy George, Kool and The Gang, Duran Duran and more. Plus, it's also been done many times since. Band Aid 2. Band Aid 20. Band Aid 30. We Are The World was neither the first nor the last.
