Girls & Boys on iTunes

iTunes has an incorrect version of Girls & Boys on Parade. It fades out at the end rather than going directly into Life Can Be So Nice. I'm not sure where that version comes from. The song is 5:30, which is the correct length for the ablum version; it's not the 3:27 single edit.

I have the CD and was able to rip the correct version of the track for use on my iPhone, so this isn't a problem for me; it's just a curiosity.

I've contacted iTunes about problems llike this in the past. There's really not much they can do about it. They are just the middle-man. They simply post the files given to them by the content provider (Warner Bros, I assume). They will sometimes pass a note to the content provider letting them know a problem has been reported by customers, but there is nothing more they can do. Content providers don't always respond to reported issues (because of indifference, incompetence, or the problem being miscommunicated). Plus, 9 times out of 10 when I try explaining this types of problems to the customer service reps at iTunes they don't understand what I'm talking about -- so even if they contact Warner Bros. they would probably explain the problem wrong. My point being, I haven't bother contacting iTunes because it would likely be useless.

Way back, there used to be an iTunes 45 of "Girls and Boys" (at least I think it was) on iTunes, which was probably the edit. It would seem they've kept that file and put it into the album for some reason. It could be a WB issue. Although Prince owned his music before he died, he did exclusively license it back to WB as his distributor. So it could be WB's oversight. I'd be pissed if I got a record full of edits like that.

It's the same on all streaming services. I find quite a few cases of non album versions of songs being used on albums. If you Stream Sign o The Times the volume fluctuates so therefore some tracks must be taken from different source uploads.

It's just one of the many reasons why I absolutely loathe the streaming services and their entire (disfunctional) business model.

Spotify has the correct segue - unlike the ruined 1999/LCR segue I posted about today.

A certain kind of mellow.

Yes, but I think the 45 was the 3:27 version. This version currently on iTunes is 5:29, which suggests it is the album version... but obviously the album version doesn't fade. That's what makes this perplexing.

how is it the streaming service's fault of they were given the wrong source material?

It's not. The album version ends right into "Life..." on Spotify. The single version is on "4Ever"

I didn't say the labels are innocent. I meant that the entire business model of streaming music is a dead end street: it's unsustainable at its current state, it treats music as FMCG, it shows no respect for the creators of music, it has no respect for the concept of albums as it focuses on its stupid playlists (hence issues like files prepared for single play get used for albums), its system of musical genres is ridiculously distorted and ignorant (therefore instead of helping people explore outside of their own primary interests, it puts up walls around them) etc. I could go on and on.
I have a long list of reasons why I loathe them and refuse to support them. The music business of the future will be very different and it's going to happen soon.

I've noticed the volume fluctuations, but I'm not sure that's because it's from different source material.

On a tangential note, iTunes/iPhones have a function called "sound check" that is suppose to even out the volume so all the songs are at the same level. But I find that it actually makes things worse rather than better.

It comes from Girl 6 soundtrack. Not exactly a new version. This was the one Prince submitted to Spike Lee. They definitely need to fix that error

Wow, OK thanks for that info. I was a little puzzled by this thread because I checked my Parade rip which is from the HD Tracks version, and there's no problem there: the track has a clear ending and LCBSN does not begin at the end of it (I can't remember if it was the case on my old CD, but if it was it was clearly poor sequencing, because technically there's no gap between the songs but they do not seugue into each other). No what I had never realized, and Princevault had not either is that Girl 6 has the odd, unnecessary fade out, which I' had never paid attention to until now, but after checking is there indeed eek

So fuck WB for fucking up those albums (1999 as well), and I'll add G&B '96 to my site as a new entry (sigh).

At the very end of 'Girls & Boys' Prince is raising the pitch of his voice as a way to reflect musical continuity with the next song – and for this reason I believe the fade out on the 'Girl 6' album is justified, as there it is followed by something completely different.
Using the 'Girl 6' version as part of 'Parade' is an annoying mistake though.

ACtually now that makes me think: could it be that fade was already there on the old 12'' (like with 1999)? Does anyone have it so they can check? I've added the entry on Girl 6 as its first release date, but maybe it's actually from 86.

I have read that "Kiss" is also the slightly longer Single version...

I just read the related thread on the Tidal's version of 1999 fading out and having the Kiss single version. I checked and iTunes has the same mistakes. This adds weight to the argument I've been making -- it's not the fault of the streaming service/download seller. This is Warner Bros. fault. They gave everyone the wrong files. Now I'm wondering what other songs have the incorrect versions posted.
