German Blu-ray of the Sign O' The Times movie to include new 90 minute documentary "Prince - The Peach & Black Times"

THIS POST HAS BEEN UPDATED (latest update on Saturday 11 May). PLEASE READ THESE UPDATES BEFORE COMMENTING.

.

According to an article from the April 2019 issue of UK magazine Record Collector, page 13:

.

Times Lapse

.

Unearthed Prince songs and new feature-length documentary on the late artist's Sign 0' The Times concert film.

.

[...]

.

Rogers is also one of many participants from the era taking part in a new, remastered German Blu-Ray of Sign..., which will include the extensive new documentary Sign Language, a look back at Prince's concert film project. [...] The German Blu-Ray, with accompanying documentary, is slated for a late summer release (a UK Blu-Ray release of Sign 0' The Times, sans documentary, is also due in the UK later in the year). "When you see Sign 0' The Times, you see some expert live musicianship," Rogers says. "Prince made concept albums and, with Sign 0' The Times, he wanted to make a concept film - but not many people know that the project was also a document of where his life was at that moment, with a failed engagement to Susan Moonsie, a change in his band and a pensiveness about the future. Now that story will also be told."

.

A Blu-ray edition of Sign 0' The Times, with new 90-minute documentary, is released by Turbine Entertainment in late summer 2019.

.

- Calum Waddell

.

The German company is actually called Turbine Media Group -- https://www.turbine.de/ .

.

.

UPDATE 1:

.

https://twitter.com/Calum...9571657729

.

Not only are we banging out a 90 minute documentary for the German Blu of this but an added 2 -3 hours of bonus goodies with the interviewees, including cloud guitar hero Dave Rusan. If you love Prince you will want this disc. It's going to be mega.

.

In the replies to that tweet, someone asked: "I'd like to see the songs that were cut from the full show, let's go crazy etc"

.

His reply:

.

I think there's licensing issues there sadly.

.

Another person asked: "Will it all be in German though or English?"

.

His reply:

.

English of course!

.

Oh ghee, looks like I was right, who could have guessed?

.

Another one of his tweets: https://twitter.com/Calum...4153158657

.

The living legend Dr Matt Fink in front of the camera. That's a wrap on the filming for Sign o'the Times and an absolutely loaded Blu-Ray from Turbine Entertainment in Germany.

.

D3fbcv-XkAEAuJ4.jpg

.

https://twitter.com/Calum...6807479297

.

Seeing a bit of talk about our new Prince/ Sign o'the Times documentary online at fan sites. It is English language and it is solely fixed on the Sign tour film. I can't wait for this to be completed. It's incredibly exciting. And we have additional bonus stuff in works too.

.

.

UPDATE 2:

.

See that reply I quoted above? This one:

.

I think there's licensing issues there sadly.

.

Funnily enough, that reply has now disappeared. Please do not assume anything from that. But I swear, earlier tonight that was his reply to a fan asking about the inclusion of deleted material. And now it is gone.

.

.

UPDATE 3:

.

https://twitter.com/Calum...5561119745

.

I'm obviously biased but shout out to @NaomiHolwill who has done a doc on Franco and Nazisploitation films so far this year, produced the bonus features for various BDs and is now working on a Prince and Last House on the Left and Giannetto De Rossi doc. She's tireless and a hero

.

.

UPDATE 4:

.

The production company's Facebook page has posted this a while ago: https://www.facebook.com/...644512535/ . Apparently it is one of their most liked posts ever. They've also posted some additional information in reply to some of the questions posted there:

.

You might want to be region free for this and for other great foreign discs!

.

June hopefully!

.

The documentary will be in English

.

So that first answer suggests the disc might be region-locked.

.

UPDATE 5:

.

According to Edgar Kruize, among the people interviewed for the doc are some Dutch technicians who were part of the team that recorded the original concerts.

.

UPDATE 6:

.

TRAILER COMING SOON! https://twitter.com/Calum...3878090753

.

UPDATE 7:

.

According to this thread on Blu-ray.com:

.

So, yes, it's right. It's coming... and it will be a piece of art and a real beauty. A comprehensive doc with long time Prince collaborators is in the making and the cover artwork will be made by an artist Prince himself chose for his own albums. I can't go into more detail atm but I am tempted to say this will be the ultimate package for every Prince aficionado.

.

Our CEO is a huge Prince fan, so he's doing product management on this one. It's going to be a monument for a great artist, with the production led by someone why does this by heart.

.

UPDATE 8:

.

Please see page 3 of this thread for an official announcement, copied from Turbine Media's Facebook page.

.

UPDATE 9:

.

Official announcement on Turbine Medien's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/...515601217/

The doc is good news.

Regarding Susannah becoming Susan accoprding to Susan falloff I wonder if Susan's tongue slipped or if the journalist was on drugs when he quoted her. But admittedly there were too many Susan's in Prince's life lol

Blu-rays released in Germany are region-2 locked. US blu-rays are region 1. You can play a german blu-ray in US if you have a region-free blu-ray player.

.

Or not. Simply depends on the company.

astounded at the lack of interest in this thread?! This is bloody huge news, why's nobody across it, researching it, moaning about it, celebrating it etc.

I for one am beyond excited. The 90 minute documentary sounds incredible & well worthy of what such an important album needs. Fingers crossed it comes off.

As long as it's not only a 'talking heads' doc with the SOTT movie footage but with more unreleased footage and hopefully footage from the original shows.

.
The view-count on this thread is almost 1200 at the moment, so I don't think that shows a lack of interest – but I guess when you've been a Prince fan for 3-4 decades, you tend to hold your excitement about announcements until the stuff actually comes out.

.

The producer(?) of this release was or still is on the org by the way, he already posted about this planned release last year, so he might provide some more details soon. (Last year he already stated that the master they will use for the movie is the same HD file that is already available on some streaming sites.) But if the documentary will really only be on the German edition, that suggests no involvement from the Estate (otherwise it would be available in all territories), therefore no vault material or any previously unseen footage either.
Still, I'll happily buy it even if it'll only be a talking heads type of documentary, I'm always happy to listen to Susan Rogers.

interesting info thanks. Agree re being hard core & beinglet down BUT this seems solid. Even if it's just talking heads it's better than just a release of the original DVD surely.

Again: not necessarily. Disney's releases for instance are mostly region free, despite there often being significant release date differences between regions: http://regionfreemovies.c...dio/Disney . (Luckily, since in recent years Disney has had the annoying habit of not releasing bonus discs outside of the USA, other than perhaps via expensive deals with local retailers.)

.

Of course, Turbine appears to be a smallish specialist company, and those do tend to be region locked. Then again, a quick Google search reveals that plenty of their releases are region-free. Considering that they appear to have an exclusive(?) documentary included, I'd suppose this one is likely to be region free as well.

.

And no, I don't suppose the documentary would be in German. Most likely virtually everyone they'd interview would speak English and they'd provide subtitles.

I disagree, In these kind of release they don t bother to make subtitles.

In fact, I have 2 dvd version s of SOTT :
- one with poor quality film but subtitles
- one with HD quality film but without subtitles

The dvd and blu ray of the WB Prince movies doesn't provide subtitles for the songs, even in English (Unlike musicals such as Westside Story, Grease, etc.)

Which clearly doesn't help to make the movies more interesting for the non English spoken audience.

And no subtitles at all for the bonus material of the WB movies, not even in English

And none of this is relevant here. A German voice-over would cost just as much as subtitles and would make the documentary harder to sell elsewhere. Again: most/all of those being interviewed are either native English speakers or speak it as a second language (if they interview any of the Dutch peple involved). None are German speakers.

No you said they would provide subtitles. Even Prince WB releases don t provide subtitles, that s a fact.
I didn't even think there would be German voice over, but that will probably be the case for the narrative.

Yes. IN GERMAN. For the DOCUMENTARY. Because this is a GERMAN Blu-ray.

You re the one not understanding my posts.
Of course I talked about the documentary.
To prove what I said, I brought up the facts that even for the WB releases THERE ARE NO SUBTITLES.
Not for the bonus material, INCLUDING THe DOCUMENTARIES.
NOT EVEN IN ENGLISH.
NOT EVEN for the songs in the actual movies LOL, which is clearly a fucked up job.
.
So you never talked about "German subtitles" I m sorry, just "subtitles". Nobody cares about German subtitles, beside Germans of course lol. I speak a little German, but come on.
.
Everyone here was talking about at least English subtitles. Moreover the narrative will surely be German speaking without subtitles.
. Logical.

Which part of THIS IS A GERMAN BLU-RAY do you find so hard to comprehend?

.

So what if there are no ENGLISH subtitles on the WB releases which are for an ENGLISH SPEAKING audience? THAT DOES NOT APPLY HERE.

.

the narrative will surely be German speaking without subtitles

.

Not saying this is impossible, but why would they go through the expense to produce a German language only documentary (which also means voice-overs for the interviews with non-German speakers) when this would a) limit their chances of selling this worldwide and b) just about everyone they'd interview would be a native Englsih speaker?

.

Stop making shit up and taking words out of context and READ WHAT I WROTE. And THINK. And look at the CONTEXT.

although basically everything is accessable in english these days

if not, ask for help (here or me) smile

thank you so much for this GREAT NEWS indeed.

Honestly this IS wonderful.

If they do it well, they might have a narrative in English (doublty though), ànd have subtitles.

(It is not all that expensive anymore from what've heard.)

But then again, this documentary would be for a niche audience, right ?

Is there anything known if The Estate is involved?

BartVanHemelen said: You re the one not understanding my posts. Moreover the narrative will surely be German speaking without subtitles. . Logical. [Edited 4/3/19 23:50pm]

.

Get a room you two!! razz
