The Time songs that sound most like Prince, and vice versa?

For example - Cool. I can't imagine that on a Prince record back in the day (ironic because he played it a lot on tour in the last few years of his life). On the other hand, I can totally see Get It Up or 777-9311 sliding into Controversy or 1999.

Thoughts?

A certain kind of mellow.

Aren't many of the Time songs are actually Prince songs, in that he wrote and recorded them, then has Morris replace his vocals to make them Time songs.

The Stick and Get it Up. Morris is singing along with Prince rather than vice verse.

The obvious "vice versa" ones to me that stand out straight away are Lolita and Prettyman. Those could easily be Time songs - they fit the Morris "persona".

As far as Time songs that Prince could theoretically have kept for himself, there's many. Get It Up, for sure, 777 for sure. Cool.... Gigolos Get Lonely Too. I've often thought Chocolate could have been re-vamped in the Love Symbol era with more of the sounds and instrumentation of that era, closer to Sexy MF.

The Stick, for sure -- I've even stuck it on a few of my Prince mixes. It's become basically a Prince song to me.

Me too and it is in my top 10 of all time. A truly nasty track in every way. I love the one from the Ahdio show where he is playing along with his bass.

International Lover, intended for the Time, still sounds like something the Time could have done.

Morris also said that he never heard the Joni reference before and wasn’t a fan of hers. 😂

Let's Work would be a good example of a Prince song that would work for The Time - especially the 8 minute jam version!

A certain kind of mellow.

The original demo of Feel U Up/Irresistible Bitch sounds pure Morris, even has Time-like backing vocals. I've never read anything saying it was intended for them though.

Morris all ready plays the drums on it.

That's the first one that popped into my head, too.

And I totally believe that Morris didn't get the Joni reference. Both Sides Now doesn't really seem like it would be on his personal playlist. lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

it was never time-like, i loved the song, but it was way more quirky and faux-serious with that communal utopia thing prince liked to sing about, that's a great choice. as far as Prince, there were many songs he did so many I'd probably have trouble listing them all, the most obvious would be international lover which was written for morris. another obvious one is cloreen baconskin

I remember one of "the times" I saw Morris Day & The Time perform which is so many I lost count and Jerome tried to pull me on stage. I remember that time watching Morris sing "Ice Cream Castle" live and how good he sounded singing it. It made me put it back in my purple playlist. Maybe Morris will put it in his upcoming book.

it's a great song but it's obvious it was NOT a typical time song, it was not that funky, it was quirky and had the dense prince chords prince always used to create a wierd alter-world. it was not cool or get it up, also great songs, just different. I loved the first and third time albums pretty much through and through. It was still a break in character for morris to sing about ice cream castles and see him glum in the video.

I disagree I feel "Ice Cream Castle" turned funky half way toward the end.

Every Time album has a song or two that isn't a funky groove or a ballad.

Having listened to Sexy MF at the gym today - it could have easily been a later day Time song.... perhaps a good closer to Pandemonium.

A certain kind of mellow.
