Just watched the video of him and Mayte inducting Parliament/Funkadelic to the RnRHF the other day again, and one tiny reaction of his really made me frown: when P started telling the story of how Clinton sent him a tape "to pee on it", Mayte burst out laughing but P was incredibly quick to shush her. Some people would probably say I see too much into this tiny gesture but for me that looked alarming, especially as Mayte didn't say a word on stage, she was just there with P as eye-candy.
Prince's reaction looked way too controlling, as if he meant "Shush, this is my stage and my speech, stay quiet."
.

And this is why I never want to be in a postion to have to be judged by a jury of my peers. That was a light moment in which both Mayte and Prince kept laughing about. Maybe they talked about it prior to this night and Mayte had some funny stuff to say about it and he didn't want her to go there publicly. We don't know. And to refer to Mayte as eye candy when she was his wife at the time is a bit insulting. Maybe it's possible he wanted her there for strength. Ever been in love?

^^@PliablyPurple, I don't think Kares was judging anyone, just stating an opinion. I think we all know that Prince was controlling, that's certainly no secret! Yes, he controlled Mayte, as well as anything else around him that he could and was allowed to get away with. IMO, that's why I think he liked his women far younger than himself, because in reality, they were more naive, and he knew it, and knew how to use it to control them. The man wasn't perfect, he had faults and flaws just like everyone else.

Exactly.
And for the record: I didn't mean to insult Mayte by calling her eye-candy. What I meant that to me it seemed as Prince was reducing her to the role of eye-candy on that stage by not even allowing her to be herself for a brief laugh, let alone allowing her to say a word or two.

No Prince's take, view, and treatment of women is still way head of its time. He has always raised women above himself, in his life and in his music. Aside from women themselves, and rightfully so, what male figure has shown the consistency Prince has in empowering women? I really can't think of any, that is not to say they are not out there, it's just to say that at the moment none come to mind.

I know he's Prince and we loved him as as an entertainer, but come on, the guy wasn't perfect, and neither was the way he treated women, including those that he supposedly loved. The man went from woman to woman, and changed women more than he did his outfits! lol Let's not forget that he cheated on his wife Mayte with Manuela, that's definitely not treating women greatly, with the utmost love and respect! rolleyes

Even in 1984, his treatment of women was questioned. See the dumpster scene in PR. Wendy's BJ act. and even the "Gangsta Glam" era "You, you and you get in the car!" etc...

As he got older, you can see he got much better. (see Better with Time, work with 3rd Eye Girl)

[Edited 3/1/19 7:24am]

The Computer Blue (blo job) scene was not about Wendy giving him head. According to the script Wendy was supposed to look more like Prince in that scene and it was to give an effect of Prince giving himself head.

Oh wow that is crazy cool lol.

That explains why Wendy's hair was more curly during that scene.

The first four lines of The Morning Papers are troubling to say the least. Especially as they appear to be based on cold hard facts.

He realized that she was new to love
Naive in every way
Every schoolboy's fantasy she was
That's why he had to wait…
.
So a man in his 30s being in love with a woman in her teens is clearly a suspicious situation. He wrote TMP about Mayte, and she was 17 when the prince was released. However, she wrote in her book that they didn’t have sex until she was of legal age. According to the date she provides in the book when they first had sex, February 9, 1993, she was 19 years of age.
.
Sinead O’Connor made accusations toward Prince which are far-fetched and inconsisted with what we know about his behavior and habits: https://www.spin.com/2018...nce-death/
No one has corroborated her story. I believe that women’s accusations should typically be taken seriously, but her accusations are not credible. Aside from SOC, not one woman has accused him of any kind of abuse or sexual misconduct.
.
He had been mourned, celebrated, and praised by numerous women, including both of his ex-wives, many former colleagues (Wendy, Lisa, Damaris Lewis, Lala Escarzega, Andy Allo, Susan Rodgers, Chaka Khan, Misty Copeland, to name several), mentees (E.g., Janelle Monae), and admirers (Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, among others). He prominently featured women in his bands throughout his career, including at the height of his fame in the 80s. These aforementioned women and numerous others have spoken of how Prince was a gentleman who respected women and supported women in advancing their careers.
.
He wasn’t perfect, no one is. I’m not a fan of some of the scenes in Purple Rain, particularly the dumpster scene. However, I think his overall record for how he treated women and portrayed them in his art is generally positive. He objectified himself as much or more than he objectified women...he’s wearing underwear and a trench coat on the cover of Dirty Mind, for goodness sake!

One song in particlar, "The One" has always made me cringe:

But if u're lookin' 4 a man that'll sweep u off your tired weary feet
Pay your bills, buy u pretty dresses
And take u anywhere u wanna eat
Make love 2 u every night of the week

... and come think of it, the entirety of "Mr Goodnight". Oh and entire album "The Rainbow Children".

Let's be real, Prince's attitudes towards women, romance, and all that stuff felt horribly dated from the very outset. In 2019 it looks ridiculous.

Yet I've had one GF back in 2008 asking me "Why aren't you always paying when we go out, my past BF's all did it", and I replied "What were they buying?" and she blushed, said nothing, took the bill and paid it.

Admitedly that was 11 years ago but those patriarcal stereotypes are still very much alive today. Last year I asked a friend about friends of her that I'd met and she said "oh, she dumped him because he wasn't dynamic and ambitious enough" (the guy had a job, mind you!).

So yeah, dated to us maybe, but I fear not to everyone.

Also, if you watch the video with the silent film kind of footage it was kind of admitting this was an old fashioned, outdated vision of love even at the time.

I see issues with Rianbow Children and religious doctrine. I don't see the problem with "The One." Those lyrics don't say; 1) That women have to do anything. 2)That a woman must be 2nd class. 3) Lyrics just reinforce's his commitent to a woman. 4) Lryics don't say she can't pick out his clothes. I think you read into those lryics what you choose-but don't demonize them when they are not. At first view of the lyrics may look controlling, it never says they have to do any of it. It's an offering and nothing more. Rainbow Children is another issue altogether.

It's not the actual idea of the 'act' but what it represented in his internalized gemini stuggle heard on that 14min opus Computer Blue

I think you missed the point - I said it felt dated, the "controlling" comment wasn't something I said. I guess I just get tired of the object of affection being this passive swooning princess being swept off her feet and bought everything she wants, "pretty dresses" etc. Zzzz.

Oh, I was taking it as a commentary on Prince/mettoo women/ equality issue as this thread topic is about. That passive aspect you mention is surface only-the song is an offering and that doesn't mean the lady can't do the same in return.
