You know since Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth didn't even crack the official charts... You know that means they sold no more than a thousand copies... So if it makes sub charts like top vinyl charts, it means at best it selling no more than a thousand copies to even determine a slot on those charts.

I know record sales have hit the bottom and I'm not sure which charts exactly you're talking about, but how can any record reach the charts at 1000 copies? eek

Do you mean charts as in "Top 200"? Because that would sound more like "Top 5000" to me eek

None of these albums even reached the TOP 200 for the re release, they are "sub charts"...

This is because the "main" chart now devalues actual sales in favor of streaming numbers. That's how you get a supposed #1 album (by A Boogie wit Da Hoodie) that has no physical release and reportedly sold only 823 digital copies. Relative to sales of other physical vinyl releases, all three of the new Prince reissues did well in their first week. But the kids aren't streaming this stuff; the albums aren't even new to streaming.

It's not what I'm asking.

Are you saying that album #200 in the Top 200 nowadays sells approximatively 1000 copies? I find that quite hard to believe. If you have figures to back that up, OK, but I wanna see them.

.

As for the charts, here we go: https://www.billboard.com...lbum-sales

.

All THREE rereleases are there, not in the Top 200 but the Top 100. #59, #80 and #87. I guess you hadn't seen it since they just entered the charts 3 days ago.

.

I must say that I'm surprised. I didn't expect them to enter the charts at all and did not understand why anyone here did expect it, not because "Prince doesn't sell" but because they're reissues, and not reissues of records that were historical hits, and also because they're LP only (well, technically they're also there digitally, but the boost in sales clearly happens now because of the LP reissues). I wonder what this says about the demographics of records buyers in 2019 (old? nostalgic? vinyl-buying hispters?) but I'm quite sure it's not at all the demographics of 1999, because I don't think reissues such as those could possibly have made the Top 100 twenty years ago..

.

But at the end of the day it's good news for those who want to get more of those reissues nod

IDK how much the reissue boosted streams and how many actual copies were purchased and how many of those were digital and how many were LP's, but as I just found out (see above), they surprisingly have entered the charts after all.

Whatever they release, the cd will likely be under 45 minutes, and will contain either a tiny booklet, or no booklet. The cd will probably be mastered at the loudest possible volume with distortion at mind numbing levels. The whole process of what to do with Prince's music is largely handled by non-fans who think there is a huge cash cow. Meanwhile, the few 5,000 or so hardcore fans that would pay anything for a 25 disc set of cds at 79 minutes each with all the unreleased material are aging, and aging quickly. By the time the legal mess is sorted out, who knows who will be left to really want to spend money on any of this. Prince likely missed out on any true opportunity for the vault after say, 2005. Now the possible commerical viability of his work is nearing the bitter end, and with thousands of hours of tape, we get a 34 minute album that the bootlegs were available in similar quality.

I would be willing to work for them for peanuts, but only under the condition that we get the material out there now. Those willing to buy this stuff are not 19 years old with a lifetime of Prince fandom ahead of them. The Purple Boat is sailing away quickly...so so sad.

Actually yes that is correct. According to hits daily double the number #50 album from last week, Dan + Shay sold 2,234 copies and that is placed at #50... So imagine what #200 would sell.

Wow! OK. Maybe then records sales don't mean much anymore period. It makes sense: I'm 42 so not a post-internet baby, yet among all the people more or less my age that I know (and I know a damn lot of people), 95% of them haven't purchased a record in over a decade: they've all switched to illegal downloads and/or streaming.

Wow wait a sec. OK, you mean sales per week (because since 1982 Thriller hasn't sold only 2,296 copies). OK, it's a bit different but then I have no idea how much a record sold per week in 1999, obviously much more but I can't tell. I'm sorry I had misunderstood you.

I did not think PE, Musicology, and 3121 would have sold 3,000 combined, so it seems they have a blockbuster on their hands. Sony, Londell McMuffin, and everyone must be getting some new private planes, basking in the glory of this re-release.

In reality, a wasted venture, just like the cheaply made vinyl releases of Parade, ATWIAD, and SOTT. Had they been 180 gram quality pressings, I would have been happy, but the layers of dysfunction would be comical if not so close to my heart and soul.

What vinyl release would make sense? Instead of releasing every single 12 inch on a standalone vinyl, why not put every remix and extended version up to 1992 on a 10 vinyl set, with a sturdy box, and lithographs of the original covers. Make it a limited set of 3000 for $110 or so? And put at least 23 minutes on each vinyl side, so you don't have to make it a 20 vinyl set.

And for the cds? Just divide all the Warners albums into two box sets, filling up each disc, with all the b sides, mixes, etc. Let the outtakes have their own box sets, and no more 33 minute discs that rip off the fans. Get it done! but we know they won't. We might get a Tony M Jugheadfest box set before anything that makes any sense.

I'll see if I can break it down...The chart you linked to is purely sales, and the vinyl releases helped Prince's albums chart there. This is how the official album chart (the Billboard 200) was compiled for decades. In late 2014, streaming was added to the Billboard 200 and pure sales became a separate component chart. Thanks to streaming, rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie had the number one album recently with only 823 copies sold but hundreds of millions of streams for the album's tracks. Streaming is more important for the album chart now than sales (which makes sense, since so few people actually buy albums anymore). Consumer consumption has changed and the BB200 reflects that now.

What makes "history", is BB200, sadly.

If Chocolate Invasion is #40 on the physical charts, if it doesn't appear on the BB 200, it doesn't make any publicity, it won't be referred to as Prince charted album, or even referenced on Wikipedia

I would want either 20ten vinyl/deluxe 2-cd version, or Come and The Gold Experience. I have Come in vinyl form but need The Gold Experience on vinyl.

Whoever "remastered" (or whatever was done) 3121 for vinyl did an amazing job and would LOVE for them to do the same to 20ten smile.
