Last Heart

I've been listening to the Crystal Ball ablum recently and the track that I've fallen in love with is Last Heart, It's just such an amazing song and might be one of Prince's best vocals on a track and that bass line and sax is just straight up funk! the horns and rhythm guitar as well!! Just an amazing song and a highlight on the record!

Great era.

Wishing I was someone else?
How many times did my heart tumble
Feeling sorry for myself?
How many times have I kissed you
And smelled another man's perfume?
How many lonely nights I missed you
Wishing for ya body in my lonely room? (lonely room)
Baby, if you break my heart one more time
It'll be the last heart you'll ever break
I've taken all I can take
Baby, this heart wasn't made too break
How many times can you hurt me (hurt me)
Before your conscience makes you stop? (stop, stop, oh)
You made it all, why now desert me?
Baby, you know you can never cop (never cop), never cop
A body that'll do you like I do
You got to get your thing together sister
I'm tired of being your fool
If you

I remember when I first heard this, not having heard it in 1986 I immediately transported back to that time period

I love this song! It is my favorite from Crystal Ball, followed closely by Acknowledge Me.

Great. And I like in the lyrics that instead of looking for a ledge to leap from, he's standing up for himself.

What?

It's a fantastic song. Many of the "tormented" love songs of that 85-86 period seem connected - Last Heart, Sexual Suicide, Empty Room, Go, Witness 4 The Prosecution, and Anotherloverholinyohead. This is what I would love to have a proper release:

*

Dream Factory 1986 version (from princevault):

*

  • 18 July 1986 configuration
  • Side 1:
  1. Visions 1
  2. Dream Factory (preceded by Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A, not listed as such)
  3. Train (different version than released)
  4. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
  5. It
  • Side 2:
  1. Strange Relationship (different version than released)
  2. Slow Love 2
  3. Starfish And Coffee 3 (omits the alarm clock intro)
  4. Interlude – Wendy 4
  5. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man (different version than released)
  • Side 3:
  1. Sign O' The Times (version released as edit on the single Sign O' The Times)
  2. Crystal Ball
  3. A Place In Heaven (Lisa Coleman lead vox)
  • Side 4:
  1. Last Heart
  2. Witness 4 The Prosecution
  3. Movie Star
  4. The Cross
  5. All My Dreams

All tracks written by Prince, except where noted
1 Written by Lisa Coleman
2 Lyrics written by Prince and Carole Davis
3 Lyrics written by Prince and Susannah Melvoin
4 Written by Wendy Melvoin

Best part is all the overlapping volcals:

When you fix your mouth to tell a brand new lie
(Never before told, by and by)
Never ignore the truth, by and by
(False words should never be spoken)
False words should never be, never be spoken
(My heart should never be broken)
And baby, my heart should never be, never be broken

Love the live, laid-back version from the Burn It Up boot. Wish it was in better quality.

It's so ahead of us we are still trying to catch up to it

I'm still trying to figure it out as well.
