$, Ego, jealousy, bitterness, family/group dynamics and the stratospheric success of Prince create issues...no big deal. The taping was wrong, maybe he was just talking sh t. But... What did Prince owe Jesse or any of these associates? They knew the deal when they signed up. It wasn’t a group like the Beatles, where everyone shared creatively. Jesse expects Prince to get him rich off a few musical ideas...pleeze. Jesse got huge exposure that enabled him to start a solo career. He barely even played on any Time records. He was in biker bands before Prince gave him a shot and now there is a whole community of fans who know his name. He is an excellent guitarist, but Prince was a genius. Deal with it.

It is a blessing and a curse if you come from the 1978-1988 Prince scene.

I hate the interviewers who in 2000 something still ask them to deep degrees about Prince and 'Is he really a control freak' It's very annoying interviewing. I love to hear about Prince from them too, but the questions are never anything that goes into the artistry or individuality. Just the same 'umbrella' questions. So I can see how it can annoy Jesse. He's done great work after Prince too. But that is not acknowledged.

Personally, I'm convinced that Prince's move to the Black Album, and re-capturing his 'black audience' was influenced by the work Jesse was producing in 1986.

Jesse pulled Prince's idol out of semi-retirement (Sly), re-recorded 'If you see me (do yourself a favor) with a pure MPLS sound and touched on race issues with 'Black In America'.

If you think about the time frame, Jesse was gaining success with funk roots, while Prince was moving into the pure 'pop' culture.

It's clear Prince tried to gatecrash Jesse's work by offering a title track in 'Shockadelica', but to some degree, I'm glad Jesse passed to draw a line under the past. It was a bit petty when Prince put it out after the turn down.

Interesting way to look at it.

‘Shockadelica’ is a very impressive album.....Jesse’s best work, imo

But he didn't really move there because he didn't release it, he released Lovesexy which the cover hit the homophobia of a lot of that and people didn't go there, not to mention the music wasn't geared toward a 'black' audience who preferred funk.
.
The Black album doesn't seem anything like Jesse Johnsons harder classsic Minni sound either.
When I listen to the Black Album, it really doesn't sound much different from prior Prince music. It still felt like SOTT music to me.

.

SOTT was a good eclectic mix of various styles, stripped, rock, some funk, some folk etc in a way a audible picture of his styles throught his career. I think it was Prince trying to follow or be influenced by what was happening, that messed him up a bit. And Jesse nor Prince were able to travers what the 90s brought though. Jimmy & Terry via Janet were able to stay ahead of the game though.

.

I agree with the rest of your post though. Prince trying to continue to have some kind of 'cock block' on people who where no longer in his camp. His kingdom was slipping away. Shockadelica... I'm glad too that Jesse passed. Even having Jerome clown Morris's Oak Tree song on the live A Love Bizarre video. Wasn't there a few shows were Prince tried to insinuate that he wrote Control?
I think Prince wasn't going to go back to that sound much because EVERYONE was copying it. It would have put him in a worse place if he did I think. I'm glad for that 1978-1989 run of music. It set him a part.

The stuff he was talking about outside of the Celebrations and Terry Lewis was all based on 1983-1984ish

I know all this stuff about Prince, it's nothing new for me. But the disses against certain people 'today' made no sense.

I know you know everything Prince, but other people don't.

No, Jesse isn't saying anything new that he hasn't always said, except the part of the celebration when he is knocking it. I think the problem with it all, is if he has such strong feelings, why did he agree to join the celebration panel? I think that is what they are questioning.

There is a big diference in questioning and actively promoting boycott and making accusations of 'blasphemy', based on privite, editted recordings.

Maybe Jesse woke up the morning after these comments and said 'I'm over thinking this". Maybe the family begged him? Who knows?

There is an element in the fan base at the moment that is toxic. Where they are unable to see anything beyond their own point of view. The reality is, they are the ones carrying the bigotry.

Well that element has always been there. It showed it's ugly head in a bg way when Prince died, and people started openly using certain associates as their 'figure peice' creating anti-Mayte twitter/fb pages and people preaching how people should show their 'loyalty' to Prince. Eric Leeds puts his tapes up for auction 'he's no longer loyal' its a lot of rubbish.

.

I personally don't care if he does the show or not. But he just seems to loothe the idea of doing it.

The fact that some of Prince’s bandmates are clamoring over a few credits on five out of 1000 songs really shows his genius.

Read the histories of George Clinton and James Brown...their bandmates claim everything. Lol

I want to know who Prince Defenders is. They put things in quotes so either Jesse said it or they’re lying and made it up. IF he did say it, again, it’s his right but then it makes him a fraud for showing up at Celebration. It’s not like he has no choice. Elisa, Sheila and others have chosen not to participate. Just say no thank you and move on.

You know I don't know who they are they just seem to disappear, they make these statements and then end up deleting everything, I just happened to catch that before they deleted it. Someone made a comment on Jesse's facebook page and posted these letters then woosh they are gone.

Here's the thing, the associates put shade on their social media, which of course is public and sometimes they are even throwing shade at each other. If they didn't want the fans talking about it, then don't put it out there to the public.

Things start to look calm, and then BAM they put more shade out there. It's playing the fans and their emotions and I think they purposly do it.

And for goodness sakes for the fans who are paying $550-1000 bucks for this Celebration, one would expect the speakers to at least like Prince, and not cuss him or insult him in the last few months, and even say snarky comments about the Celebration....

Yes, this is true. I would never pay that money for a celebration gig so it doesn't affect me.

But then again, he didn't say this in public, we can't and shouldn't think we can dictate what he says in private. What we can do though is not secretly record him and release it to the public.

Grow up? How many years ago was it? 30+? Not healthy to be bitter or feel anger towards someone for that long. And if that’s really how he still feels why be involved in the Celebration? Seems phony to me.
