The original members of the Time, all 7, reunited for a residency at the Flamingo in Las Vegas in 2008?

You could upgrade your ticket for a VIP Meet and Greet in a roped off area after the show. We took a picture with The Time, and Morris disppeared and the others hung out. I had Jesse sign my "What Time Is It?" record and my Jesse Johnson's Revue record. I asked him about Prince and he had nothing negative to say. But when I asked who he was influenced by as a guitarist:

"Hendrix? Brothers Johnson? Prince?" He responded "no, no and no; I'm influenced by me"

For those who have never met The Time in person, something you'll find peculiar. Other than Jellybean and Jimmy Jam, they're all very short. As a 5'8" man, I was taller than Jesse, Monte, and towered over Morris. It may say differently on the internet, but I think I was taller than all of them other than Jellybean and Jimmy Jam - both towered over me...

nod

I agree with ALL of this. I was in attendance at the Vegas residency also. Jesse (whom I've seen several times live over the years) is a short man. Jellybean(whom I ran into in the lobby entrance rolleyes) is the TALLEST. So is Jimmy Jam(whom recently lost a LOT of weight and looks great). One thing about Jesse he is VERY self possessed, gifted, & a guitar God. But comes off as VERY humble on the surface. His stories about the studio sessions between Prince, him, & Morris seem truthful & revealing. Also he told me he DID NOT teach D'angelo how to play the guitar.

Well, whatever.

Prince is known for sometimes being a real asshole, just like every single one of us can be.

He was obviously human, right ?

It looks like loads of people are still not ready for stories that fill up the whole purple picture.

well, when i'd see pics of prince with morris or some of these other guys i'd think "they must be pretty short themselves, they don't look much taller than prince, prince wore the 3 inch heels which made him 5-5 most of his public life.

Interesting.

I knew that Jesse and Monte were somewhat short, but i had absolutely no ideal that Morris was the height that he is. I read you comments and immediately Googled "Morris Day's height". And it say's that he's 5'7. In looking at photos of Morris, he looks way taller. I have seen The Time in concert(in the 80's), but i couldn't really tell how tall each member was.

Anyway, my bad for going off topic. Carry on...

This highlights why as much as I want everything about Prince documented by his associates now while memories and people are still around to do it, that it may be too soon.

I have read many interviews where there is a lot of hesitation to delve too deeply into the personal matters and arguments and things that may be too sensitive for the associate. There is a lot of dignity and respect in the interviews i’ve read or listened to. Respect for both Prince and his legacy, and self respect as artists and individuals.

So i do not expect too much new from the upcoming Netflix documentary.

Perhaps/hopefully time will allow it all to come out without feelings of pain or disrespect and an acknowledgment that we were dealing with a historical figure that needs to be documented for future generations. That it is not about the NOW, but for the generations to come when all the memories have long died.

depending on the person, it seems people can have some solid memories, quincy jones wrote in a lot of detail about ten years ago in his book. johnny cash seemed to have great memory for his bio. but I would tend to agree, most people do not remember much of anything, i'm always the one in my group of friends who brings up stuff that they have no earthly idea of what i'm reminding them, even thinking i'm lying until i fill in enough details and then they go "oh yea, i do remember that" one such incident happened when my best friend claimed to see prince here in seattle, i always doubted that but he was so sure of it, he'd forgotten it until i reminded him of all the details. I still don't think he saw Prince though, probably just another half-crazy lightskinned brother.

My opinion is that the whole situation is unfortunate. It's unfortunate that Jesse still appears to be harboring some resentments towards Prince(and others). It's unfortunate that Prince and Jesse never got the chance(or will never get another) to make their relationship more amicable. And its unfortunate that someone felt the need to record and post to the world a private conversation they had with Jesse. I assume that Jesse looked at that person as being a "friend", so them recording and posting their conversation is a pretty fucked up betrayal.

Now, having said that stuff, without Prince there most likely wouldn't be a Jesse Johnson. And Jesse should never ever forget that. I do understand that(and have voiced it many times on here)business wise, Prince seems to have done some people dirty. But still, without Prince, that whole Minneapolis camp would never have become what it did. Straight up, ALL them cats owe a debt of gratitude towards Prince...

I agree

but I will say that as long as you're alive you have the chance to make things right, talk, cry, clear things up.

It's sad that Jesse didn't do his part, and it's sad that Prince waited till the end to do what he probably wanted to 10 20+ yrs ago

About the memories, I was being subtle. Thank god Quincy is still around and I love him to death now more than ever after watching his documentaries. He’s not a perfect human being, NO ONE is, I just meant that the no one lives forever. It seems like the generation that Quincy is from, like Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney are seemingly indestructible, but eventually we all pass away along with all our great insights and life stories.

wasn't arguing with you, people do forget a lot of stuff, probably, who knows? maybe 95 percent of their lives it seems, but not everyone does. Quincy is losing a step, in the past year he claimed that malcolm was selling drugs when he met him in the early 50's but in his bio he said he was "no pusher", maybe it's slipping memory or maybe he's just being more honest, hard to tell. I could see either one being true, malcolm was by most accounts clean when he left prison but that doesn't mean he may not have done a little street hustling here and there, the truth would suffice for me.

Most of the audio was bad, & was very hard to hear what was said clearly.
It was edited & chopped a few times..., incl at the start, so as to sound worse than it was.

I did NOT hear him say Sheila was a bad drummer, & I played it at least 10 times, I heard him say she bothers him, many fans have issues with her moves post '16 btw.
Something was said about Bobby's drumming skills I think, I could only hear the last part of the bit about Bobby.
Let me remind you many associates & fans have made comments re Bobby's skills over many yrs.
He did not say he has no love for Prince.
He is not a fam, he is a peer, colleague & friend of Prince's. They lived together at one point. In so many words he was saying he doesn't look at P like the fams do. Naturally.

What he said re not being given credit for compositions/playing is not new, we have heard about this since the 80s, from Jesse & others.
To isolate 4/5 minutes out of context is manipulative.
As is to secretly record a private conversation.

Jesse has not ever used P, he has his own career, Jesse has not exploited his death for profit, lied, auctioned P's belongings, sold P related merch, told personal stories he woulda never told when P was here, or caused permanent damage to his name, etc etc etc, like some others I could mention who y'all Stan for.
And I sure as hell never saw a petition to stop those individuals from attending the celebration.

everybody is entitled to their own thoughts, feelings and opinions; especially those that were directly involved with Prince. Jesse and Prince always had a difficult/complex relationship. Prince had complex and layered relationships with majority of past associates. Yes you can be like brothers and feel the way Jesse feels about P. I have family members i love but i don't deal with or talk to them. It's normal; especially with black folks.

i say all that to say, it's not that big of a deal. them prince defenders are the exact reason why Prince hated the word fan "(short for fanatic). it's borderline insane. if you choose not to support that estate or the celebration, that's your prerogative.

also, jesse bailed cause of disagreements during the recording of the album and when they were trying to tour as far as i know, they didn't even wanna play the new stuff, just the hits. on top of money, etc. etc.

Hey folks - can you imagine the "trash talk" we'd hear had the conversations of Morris, Jesse, JellyBean, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Wendy, Lisa, BrownMark, Matt Fink, Sheila E, Miko...etc, etc, etc. been secretly and ILLEGALLY recorded throughout the last 40 years??!!! Come on!!!!!!!! This is just ridiculous.

*

The conversation was deceptivley and illegally recorded - period, end of discussion. It would never be permissible as evidence in a court of law as recordings can be edited and "doctored", and legal action can also be taken against someone who records conversations without the participant's knowledge.

*

Regarding the April celebration....I have no doubt that every single associate performing at that event has talked "trash" about Prince during and after their time with him. Hell, they've even discussed grievances "on the record" in the past. Prince was an extremely gifted musician, but also complicated and often very difficult to work with - we all know this.

[Edited 2/10/19 8:34am]

Exactly! 40 years, so many people behind & infront of the camera, do people seriously think Jesse is the only one who doesn't gel with some of the others??! Lmao!!

"Doctored" audio, yes, & that's exactly what they did, chopped & screwed.

Agree with your whole post. Common sense!!

If he thinks Bobby is a terrible drummer, and makes such disturbing remarks about Sheila, one of Prince's most renowned 'sidewomen', then maybe his problem is arrogance. P played with/ selected many musicians, none of them were shitty.

Disturbing?
He said she bothers him. That's it.
She bothers me too, & quiet as it's kept, I'm faaar from the only one.
Non stop pimping of the purple post '16, only to find out after all her big talk she didn't even speak to the investigators until last year! Plus advised Judith not to speak to them & offered help in lawyer-ing her up.

Text from Prince read:
Jesse the people you are dealing with are beneath you. People want me, you, and Morris. Just wanted you to know you are much more than that. I love you and I’m proud of you. I have something I want you to have. Prince
I never called, I never spoke to him. Now I’ll never have that opportunity again...my loss forever.

Wow,when Prince wrote "the people you are dealing with are beneath you.....you are much more than that",I guess he was referring to D'Angelo and his band? hmmm

also,is anyone else curious about what Prince was going to give to Jesse?

Yes, he was referring to D'Angelo & Questlove, Jesse spoke about it on the Questlove Supreme podcast last year.

Also, never forget these are human's with subjective opinions/memories, & some folks clearly have agendas.

wasn't arguing with you, people do forget a lot of stuff, probably, who knows? maybe 95 percent of their lives it seems, but not everyone does.

I wonder about Quincy’s recollections too lol But I think he’s old enough not to care what anyone thinks anymore.

reminds me of a story, my mentor, who i've mentioned many times here, was bruce lee's best friend, sometime after our relationship went sour, i read an interview where he said that he recalled bruce running after someone at his store who tried to park his car in his lot, I always wondered as egostistical as it might sound, if his brain got the memory of me and bruce mixed up because that happened when I worked for him. I could see his aging brain confusing things, in fact, he can't even remember me, one of his closest students unless people prompt him and say "you know, pete, from the store, security". And..., I hate to say it but there have been many times when I remember something i saw on video as slightly different to what it really was, if it weren't for you tube, i'd probably never be able to see that my memory isn't 100 percent either, but it's better than anyone I know. The human brain is a mysterious thing.

Yes they sure do.

How long for? You guys have to realise that Jesse, Morris and the rest of The Time are brothers. You are allowed to talk shit about your brother or sister and nothing will change your relationship. Everyone here are talking as if your opinion matters to Jesse or Prince, it doesn't and nothing you guys say will change my affection for Jesse.
He will get a pass every time.

This whole discussion about Jesse and whether he should be part of the celebration is hot air.

Peace 💜

I agree - here's my earlier post as I think it bears repeating....

*

*

I think many are forgetting that it seems Jesse saved Prince's ass back in 1984 after Monte, Jimmy, and Terry left the band, and Morris had refused to work with the new players. He went in and took over to teach the new guys for the film. No doubt Prince helped him and the others get into the business, but it seems he also took more than he gave at times. He wanted full control, and also the main spotlight, which does not leave room for growth under his umbrella.

Agreed.
Science tells us eye-witness accounts are the most unreliable, but it’s good to hear where people are coming from.
