What did Jesse Johnson say [about Prince]?

[This is being reopened. Please be civil to one another, no baiting or flaming, name calling - you know..... the usual "org rules". Any shitty problems with this thread and it will be shut down and offenders will be dealt with accordingly - this is a warning - luv4u]

I saw on Twitter that Jesse allegedly took shots at Prince, Sheila and other members of the time. Someone responded that if he feel this way he shouldn’t be part of the Celebration events. There was a link to a YouTube video but the video is no longer available. Anyone know what he said?

He said " prince fucked him over and his kids" ( regarding money) and he said he has no love for prince like we all do. Called sheila e and bobby z shitty drummers.

The audio was under five minutes long.
It was a private conversation. Someone recorded him & leaked it, smdh.
Most of the audio was bad, & was very hard to hear what was said clearly.
It was edited & chopped a few times..., incl at the start, so as to sound worse than it was.

I did NOT hear him say Sheila was a bad drummer, & I played it at least 10 times, I heard him say she bothers him, many fans have issues with her moves post '16 btw.
Something was said about Bobby's drumming skills I think, I could only hear the last part of the bit about Bobby.
Let me remind you many associates & fans have made comments re Bobby's skills over many yrs.
He did not say he has no love for Prince.
He is not a fam, he is a peer, colleague & friend of Prince's. They lived together at one point. In so many words he was saying he doesn't look at P like the fams do. Naturally.

What he said re not being given credit for compositions/playing is not new, we have heard about this since the 80s, from Jesse & others.
To isolate 4/5 minutes out of context is manipulative.
As is to secretly record a private conversation.

Jesse has not ever used P, he has his own career, Jesse has not exploited his death for profit, lied, auctioned P's belongings, sold P related merch, told personal stories he woulda never told when P was here, or caused permanent damage to his name, etc etc etc, like some others I could mention who y'all Stan for.
And I sure as hell never saw a petition to stop those individuals from attending the celebration.
Smmfh.

Hey, Jesse, Have u heard, it's a free world - and it's Prince's

My oh my ... what a day, what a day. Started off with the news that Jesse Johnson was unknowingly recorded while talking shit about Prince, and how he never wanted to be a part of the "Celebration" Memorial concerts that came out just after Prince's passing.

He (in the recording that was posted on The Prince Defenders facebook page that has since been deleted!) rants about things that he held against Prince, or was just talking a whole mess of smack against the man who pretty much made him a star.

Since then, in the "Prince World", where all of us gather and live to continue to talk about him, of him, for him, and to defend him, (and even mildly bitch about him - but, with love!) everyone is going crazy and saying that he has no business being featured in the line up for the Paisley Park upcoming June 2019 celebration.

Kinda makes these lyrics from "FREE WORLD" sound like it's more about him and Prince, than anything - check them out:

---

Free World
Jesse Johnson

Nobody likes the way I hold my mic
They say it's too much like my friend
The clothes that I wear, the way I comb my hair
Makes them come out to offend

Didn't you know I knew yourself you're not too cool?
What makes you want to mess with my life?
I think I'll buy a gun, go out and have some fun
Maybe even come and take your wife
Somebody tell 'em

Have you heard? It's a free world and it's mine
Have you heard? It's a free world and it's mine

Heard you like to rock, but I'm not at the top
What makes you point your finger at me?
You don't think I'm hot, then why and try to stop
Your girlfriend from dancing to my beat?

How would it make you feel to know you're so for real
And have someone to call you a lie?
I think you'd buy a gun, go out and have some fun
But then again, maybe kiss suicide
Good god, tell 'em

Have you heard? It's a free world and it's mine
Have you heard? It's a free world and it's mine

---

Now, before we get all crazy and act like you ain't never bitched about a good friend to other people before, and still turned around and was all chummy with that very same friend, that very same day, and in that very same outfit you were wearing when you were bitching about them, Jesse Johnson is human too.

We are not sure of the time when this recording was made, and we are not even able to hear the recording any more, because it's been deleted from the page that posted it.

But, we should all take a moment to really listen to your heart. Jesse may have had some very good reasons to do this at the time it was done, and so far, as far as we know, he had never publicly commented poorly about Prince, and appeared to be respectful of him and his legacy. But, he also kinda talked a mess about him doing silly things - but, nothing horrible.

WE HAVE TO REMEMBER, THIS IS A CONCEALED RECORDING DEVICE, RECORDING SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T KNOW HE WAS BEING RECORDED AND ILLEGALLY POSTED TO DEFAME HIS CHARACTER. Regardless of who he is, it was still a private conversation, and in no way was Jesse trying to defame him purposely.

So, take it as it is - yes, apparently it happened. Mr. Johnson, is still a human being, and is not infallible, and yes - sometimes, you may talk shit about someone you love, or, at least, like - and not meaning to have it published, which i believe to be the case here.

I saw The Jesse Johnson Revue live in the 80's and there was a moment when a drunk fellow wanted to get up on stage with the others that were pulled up to party onstage during the concert, and when he wasn't selected, the guards were forcing him to go back to his seat, rather roughly ... it seemed like a fight was going to escalate. Jesse pretty much stopped the show and looking at the guards and the man, said for them to chill out, let's just have fun and not start fighting, this is a party not a fight, and asked the man, if he let him on stage would he be cool, and the man said yeah - and he did, and the night went on. I always thought that was a class act move and remembered that in my head forever.

So, be cool people - don't let it get out of hand - remember, Prince always preached Love4OneAnother!!

Yeah, he said nothing really 'new' about the 'Prince protege/umbrella' issues.

.

But hearing it, it seems he is being forced to do the Celebration. He just shouldn't do it. He seems to really 'hate' the idea of doing it.

.

Didn't care at all for the off handed comments about Terry Lewis, Bobby Z, Sheila E and Morris though. That was douchy thing.

.

The person who recorded it secretly is a douch bag though.

PURPLEIZED3121

meanwhile there is another interview post 2016 where Jesse is hugely complimentary about Prince & acknowledging that P gave him his big break etc.

They clearly had a well documented love / hate relationship. P probaly stole ideas...but look at Jesses solo stuff...it's pure Purple! [have you seen James Brown's track record for stealing beats & riffs btw?!!]

I listened a number of times & as I said the audio was very bad for most of it.
I could not understand what was said about Terry, & all I heard of Morris was his name said.
I have seen people make claims re hearing things said about Terry & Morris, yet not one has given a quote.
What is it you think you heard him say re Terry & Morris?

Jesse's response on Facebook over this fiasco.

Why I Don’t Photoshop My Life

Living your truths, warts and all, takes away the weaknesses that will eventually destroy your soul. It’s a new day, feelings and outlooks of the past don’t represent where and what I am today.

I am very honored and happy to be participating in this year’s Celebration 2019, and out of respect to the Prince Estate, family, friends and the fans... Let me really explain the unfortunate illegally taped posting of a private personal conversation.

I have always tried to draw a (thin yet visible) line between my public and private existence and have avoided people or situations that are toxic. I have personally experienced the ups and downs of this business and diplomatically in public forums have tried to convey my experiences – my story is not Photoshop.

I will share a few stories... A few insights.
My father begged me for years to come visit him and I would not. He had remarried (that persona was not good to him – so I stayed away as to not witness it). I told him” Pop, I will fly you anywhere I am” – he would not hear of it. My father had never flown in his life. When I was told he was deathly ill, I’d ask him if he was sick and he’d tell me no I’m fine. Well he died Thanksgiving Day 2010, and it haunts me to this day that my visiting him would have made his life. He loved me very much and was very, very, proud of me too. In essence I ghosted him, when I should have been in his life. After all, my father never tried to deny me nor block me from achieving my dreams.
Stories are often misrepresented, and yet this is the part of the business I signed for (perhaps unknowingly), but just know when you buy the records, go to shows and such, you can’t rewrite or dismiss one’s story or feelings when it comes to their personal experiences.

The dynamic of Prince and my relationship was that of brothers – we were family. I lived with him, we did not always see eye to eye like in a lot of relationships (mother and son, husband and wife, sister and brother), but at the end of the day there has always been admiration and respect.

The people I truly loved as family were Prince & Morris. I didn’t know the other band members very well when The Time formed.
I have gone through some things, of course; I suspect we all have with our own families and jobs behind closed doors. But even more so, similar with my dad, I am definitely angry at myself for not calling Prince back when he reached out to me in 2016 (I was in Wellington, NZ rehearsing with D’Angelo) – Denise Matthews (Vanity) had just died a week before that trip. It was all too much for me.

Text read:
Jesse the people you are dealing with are beneath you. People want me, you, and Morris. Just wanted you to know you are much more than that. I love you and I’m proud of you. I have something I want you to have. Prince
I never called, I never spoke to him. Now I’ll never have that opportunity again...my loss forever.

These days I find myself having a really hard time with friends dying and me knowing I had not spoken to them. I have lost so many friends in 2016-17-18. It was like a gold rush on death.
Regarding my performing in Prince’s house: Celebration 2019

The first time I was in Paisley Park, Prince ran up to me and whispered “Man I’m glad someone else is here that can dress. He showed me all around his building, it was amazing and I told him he did a great job. He was most proud of his sound stage and stated if he had $10 -11million more he could have made the ceiling move like Francis Ford Copolla’s Zoetrope Studios.

So, here’s hoping this time around - I can somehow return his phone call to me and speak to him and through the music and deliver a very solid, exciting, heartfelt performance to the town that launched us all.
Stay Up, Stay Strong. Jesse J.

OK, it's all been explained with a heartfelt response by the person involved. Lets do the right thing for once and lock the thread so there's not the obligatory bs comments about a human being that's done something human.

Interesting. I want to believe Jesse's feedback on this delicate conversation that was illegally leaked. Him and Prince had too much history together. Being friend’s u will experience the good, the bad and ugly moments, but when it’s all said and done in most cases u will still have the respect and friendship.

He might well have done. He might still do. On the one hand, you can look at that and think of him as an ungrateful bastard because he'd be nothing without Prince.

On the other hand, you might look at that and think of him as an artist who was hired to be one of Prince's puppets. But unlike some of Prince's other puppets, Jesse was/is a very talented musician in his own right and would rather be seen as his own man and not the guitarist from a puppet band.

Likewise, you might consider that Prince refused to let them use The Time name when they decided to do music by themselves, without Prince's input. That was a cold move on Prince's part, it has to be said.

There's a lot of different sides to the story.

Prince and Jesse had a brotherly mildly caustic adversarial type of relationship. Jesse is probbly the only one whjo talked shit to Prince and didnt live under the "hopefully he will work with me again" cloud as he had his own talent/career. TBH Prince has done some fucked up things to his colleagues. He just gets bashed for saying so and not beong kissassified for saying so and acting so. Whenever Wendy used to bring things up, everypne fawned over her and gave a finger to Prince. When Jesse says something tht doesnt get his lips Maybeline MAC brown, "everyone loser their minds!"-(c) The joker. Prince Defenders group? get the entire fuck out of my face lol. A new nut cult is born lol

Prince Defenders rolleyes

Defending him from what? He ain't coming back. Only Prince fans and, I dunno, mega John Hughes fans have any idea who Jesse is.

They clearly had a well documented love / hate relationship.

Indeed.I recall a blistering 1986 interview in Rock N' Soul magazine where Jesse totally trashed Prince."Do you hear the garbage he's been playing lately",Jesse asked, adding "That's because me,Morris,Terry and Jimmy were his most creative influences. Now that we're gone from his organization,he has nobody to steal from.He heard our stuff and got ideas of his own" eek He also spoke about Under The Cherry Moon and the less-than-fantastic sales of Parade: "His karma is catching up to him.Now he's realizing that what goes around comes around".
