Prince concerts on Youtube

Is it me or have I not even noticed before today that there are some bootleg concerts on the official Prince YouTube page?

I've just had a look at the full list of uploads for the official channel and there definitely aren't any bootleg shows on there.

The less we talk about concert footage on Youtube, the higher the probability of said footage staying on Youtube for a while. You know they shut them down with the swiftness as soon as we mention those videos here, especially with links and all.

Just saying.

OK, let's go thru this again but I wish we wouldn't have this thread every other month. I really think we should have a sticky or updated FAQ for those questions that keep popping up over and over like this or the bootlegs on other streaming service.

.

Those videos are NOT official nor have they been added to the channel by the Estate or any Estate-associated label.

.

You can do some reasearch on how YT works nowadays, particularly the Content ID licence. Uploads by individuals are now identified by the algorithm and treated in such a way that they'll make money for rights holders, instead of just being there or forcing labels and publishers to spend money tracking them down and asking YT to remove them. Between making money from piracy or spending money trying to fight an impossible to win war, labels and publishers have chosen the former. Prince, of course, refused to play the game in his lifetime and as the artist it was his prerogative, but the Estate now does, because it's the sensible thing to do when you're a company aimed at generating profit from a music catalogue.

.

YT's algorythm then gets a little too enthusiastic and tends to add some of those to the artists' official channels to give them more visibility. Don't forget: YT's sole purpose is to make sure that... you keep watching stuff on YT!

.

Now there could be a great debate like "should Content ID uploads be treated like official material since, after, they're being allowed?". I'd say no however, because it twists our definition of "official" way too much. It's like, say, when a radio station used to play a live SDB version of a Prince song from a bootleg (I remember it happened in France, one big French station had this "live" program where they'd play bootlegs once a week): if they'd play, say, Kiss, they'd add Kiss to their playlist and Prince would get his revenue as if they'd played the studio version and the radio station wouldn't get sued, so in a way it was "allowed". Nevertheless, as it was not a live recording sent to the station by Prince or WB, it couldn't possibly be treated as an official Prince broadcast. Same here. And same with those semiu-official bootlegs that benefit from a legal loophole in the EU about TV and radio broadcasts: this loophole does not exist in the US, which is Prince's country of origin, and those releases are no more legit than, say, a pirate copy of Lovesexy sold in some small, developing countries that do not have or do not enforce any copyright law whatsoever.

I was just asking the question. I wasn't bothered by it. They were on the official channel and with the verification icon. I hadn't seen them before and so it threw me for a loop.

It's just that it creates much confusion, there have been people asking about those before. I think Small Club was/is there some time ago, and some people were like weeew did they officially release Small Club?
