Yep. All you have to do is just a little research to learn of the many great musicians who left us too soon because of that beast - the amazing Jimi, the powerful Janice, and the beautiful Mr. Mojo Risin to name just a few.

Even if not addictive, I would imagine if you're doing it everyday, or on a very constant basis, it would probably get in the way of being productive

I don't think anyone's "dismissing" it, but it was extremely common, especially in Prince's generation, to have tried or occasionally used drugs in one form or another. This in no way translates to him being a "regular" drug user - at least not back in the earlier years. If he had been using acid or another similarly potent drug all the time he would not have had the career he had. No way.
