It reminds me of this anecdote in Steven Ivory's book,
Prince would wait to catch a cold to record
his lead vocals on specific "sad" songs.
To get that blue voice ("Crazy You","So Blue").

"101" sounds definitely like Prince having a cold that day.
The Mavis songs too. It's just too alien a voice. Like, it's not his.
And it's a damn performance, it is hard to sing in tune
with phlegm in the throat. In one take, don't mention it.

Yeah, I guess. I mean, I'm sure the copy out there is from some soundboard source. I guess I just want the best source available from the estate, which would/should be the tape itself put on CD or vinyl. The circulating version I have isn't a bad copy by any means. I enjoy hearing him call out of the band; vocals that were muted or otherwise removed in the released version.
