Wasn't it Prince who tried to kill MJ with the car? probably in a jokey way.

Holy moly.

I think another song could've worked, where it was a more balanced collaboration.

I always felt something like Superfly Sister, Why You Wanna Trip on Me, Give In To Me, Partyman, 7, or Endorphinmachine could've worked as duets between them

Brad Sundberg, who worked on the song, wasn't there when Prince heard it, posted this on Facebook

The word "Duet" was all over the original track sheets and tape boxes. In fact, it sort of became known as the "Pee Duet". No, that is not a mis-spelling; some of the work tapes and early mixes were called "Pee Duet".

I seem to remember that as part of our security measures very few people were to know that Michael was talking with Prince about doing the duet, so spelling it "Pee" might really throw a curious guest into a quandary. Hey, this was way before Twitter and smart-phones, so our security measures were a bit more unorthodox.

Anyway, the tracks were prepped, and Prince finally came to listen to the song. (Again - I am working on a Taco Bell commercial or eating an In-N-Out burger this particular day.) I'm sure Michael played it for him at 122db spl, and I'm sure the room was rocking. I'm sure they got along swimmingly and I'm sure it was a very memorable day for everyone there.

I can say that when I finally did get back into the studio later that day everyone was very excited about Prince's visit, and how cool he was to be around.

from Bruce Swedien

I was there for a couple of the meetings with Prince and Michael, Quincy and all. Personaly I think that after meeting with Michael, Quincy, Fredy DeMann and his team, Prince realized that he couldn't win this duet/duel with MJ, artistically or other wise... And pulled out... He left the building, so to speak...

As far as I am concerned. I want to say that I love Prince's music...

It was mainly at Quincy's request that MJ came up with Bad and try to make it a duet with Prince

Michael DID reach out to Prince over the years to collaborate on the HIStory album and to help on the cancelled Hurricane Katrina charity single

Yes,I went to some of Sundberg listening stations.
What Sundberg made us listening to was a long never heard version of Bad. It s not the same thing to listen this song in a studio where the sound is incredibly good, and to listen to Bad at home on CD.
.
So that's why I am persuaded that the problem wasn't the music or lyrical content.
.
Everything in that song could have been negotiated, including Prince playing the funky bass, the solo clavier, etc.
And, of course, the word "butt".
.
That butt story was a way for Prince to talk about that missed duet in an humorous way. That s TV, that s showbusiness, you have to be entertaining for the masses.
.
That s why it s absurd that some trolls here really think that :
1. MJ sent a tape of his overprotective work to Prince
2. Prince recorded his own version of the song and sent him to MJ
.
We are talking here about 2 professionals musicians and superstars at the top of their creativity and seriously dedicated to their art.

It's singularly the line " Im bad Im bad Im really really bad..." Its lije grandma saying cool or hashtag. It's really embarrassing. Also MJ released an album every five generations of mankind and these are high profile marketed songs. With Prince you'd have to be a fan to find silliness. I disagree with Sexy MF earlier too. Musically it's great. Lyrically it's knowing. You can see the humour in the video!

Prince simply didnt do it coz it was way below his standards. I think people are wrong here about the Madonna track. I think it's really subtle. Probably scared the shit out of Madonna at the time.

I've never really gotten the hook of "bad" or had any part stick (unlike many other MJ songs that last of which was "Butterflies").

So... I would pay old school bootleg prices to hear what Prince's take on it was. He would have found his idea of the pop "hook" in the idea.

I’ve heard the story from different sources, and I somehow thought engineer Hans Buff was talking about on the Youtube video below at the 24 minute mark

Around that same time Prince sent back Madonna a tape of her "Like A Prayer" with him playing wild guitar all over it. Now, what were you saying about artists not sending each other tapes of unreleased music? (Perhaps you think Madonna's too mainstream? Then how about Kate Bush?) Or about Prince treating a song as a joke?

That's not funny. It's easier to just run down a guitar track, then let her use as much or as little as she wants to use. As well as fly in any part wherever she want to put it.

What?

If Prince did that I hope he said your ass is mine. That butt lyric is so middle school.

"Ass" adds more ferocity than "butt" but the context is still the same.

I also find it ironic and kinda funny that you say MJ saying "butt" is so middle school but think that Prince saying "ass" instead would be such a great improvement.

Not only was I right about this Bad story, but you quote an instance that goes with what I m saying from the start.
.
It would have been simpler for everyone to make Prince involved in this song (or another one for that matters) with just him playing an instrumental solo on it.
.
Bad could have been the greatest song on earth, Prince would have never collaborated with MJ, and you know it. Period.
.
On Like A virgin, Prince only played an overdubbed instrument that took him about 5 minutes to improvise, and that was too bad to make it on the album.
.
There was no rivalry and no comparison possible between Prince and Madonna, a man and a woman
.
Nothing to do with a troll here saying Prince re recorded bad, musically, lyrically, etc.

Patrick LEonard (?) sayd Prince made a version with a long guitar solo throughout the track and a tiny part of it was used on the album version or a remix.

It was a bit of a joke but I stand by it. In the context of this particular song, when you're talking about being the baddest ASS around - baddest BUTT doesn't sound as BAD, does it? Watered down for the pop masses and tipper gore types.

Wasn't it Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me that Prince sent Michael & it was Siedah Garrett (the writer of Liberian Girl) that did the duet (I Just Can't Stop Loving You) with Michael. It would have been great if Prince & Michael would have done something like 100 MPH, I think Mike was digging them as he gave them a shout out

I think you can hear part of his solo on the album version in reverse or was that only in the video for the song?

on one of the 12” versions released at the time there is even a snippet of “Bob George”

Arguing about this or Bad is just bonkers. Of course they asked Prince to record on Bad with MJ, of course Prince participated in Like A Prayer.
