TBH, I dont believe that just discovered and neeeded immediate release story at all. Nobody worth their salt as a fan did not already know about Eavesdropping In Intmate Moments. Especially someone chosen to curate the vault. Why that story was pushed is weird to me. Almost either a cover-up story for whatever reasons or straight up trolling.

I don;t think he was chosen, he said he volunteered to curate the vault and it's pretty obvious that he isn't as knowledgable as the average fan.

Face it, we're getting this:
Disc 1: 1999 album but the segue from 1999->Little Red Corvette is broken
Disc 2: How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore
Horny Toad
Irresistible Bitch
Moonbeam Levels
Little Red Corvette (Dance Remix)
1999 7" edit
Little Red Corvette - 7" edit
Delirious - 7" edit
Let's Pretend We're Married - 7" edit
All The Critics Love U In New York - 7" edit
Lady Cab Driver - 7" edit
One common outtake from the wrong time period sourced from a Blast from the Past mp3 download.
DVD: announced in the press release but never comes out.

I'm as pessimistic as you.

PR deluxe was great. The compulsive illegal downloader that you are will never be satisfied, since almost everything has already leaked. Personally, I m just listening to official releases, so everything in the CD 2 of PR deluxe was new to me. And it was the best Prince release since at least 3121
Not sure how to take your response? Very presumptuous of you to know the reason for my criticism of PR Deluxe and assume it is because I already had those tracks? I do own physical bootlegs (not bought any for well over a decade) and did have a lot of downloads from back in the days of Napster but again nothing for more than a decade. I did have some (not all) of the tracks included or different versions of them. However, I always want to own official released versions of everything and wouldn't and haven't criticised any release for including rarities etc that have previously leaked...because I still want the official version. My criticism of PR deluxe is that it was poorly executed, the sound quality wasn't great and WB reversed a previous official announcement about a second disc of vault material. But as per previous point, I would have bought PR deluxe anyway just to own the official long version of Computer Blue.

Objectively, PR Deluxe had many flaws:

- I'm not sure about the remastering because I ain't no audiophile but consensus is that it's just louder.

- Glitch on Erotic City (outrageous, a free new CD should have been offered to purchasers)

- Drop-out on Computer Blue Extended (really not cool)

- Material missing (several edits of PR, audio versions of the music videos and the music videos themselves on the DVD, and even though it may have been more difficult regarding rights, the 2 TV appearances would have been a nice bonus, as well as 4 The Tears In Your Eyes #1 since it was released during the "PR era", i.e. before ATWIAD launched, but that last one is debatable as consensus is that it belongs with ATWIAD)

- Some confusion regarding recording dates (with Possessed 84 being labeled as 83 on top of it all, meaning they acknowledged the existence of 2 versions and still managed to get it wrong when everyone knew which was which)

- A questionable choice for TDE, given that it wasn't the "final" version, even though it's always nice to have a work in progress version, but still...

- Outtakes all coming from cassettes in the WB vault as opposed to original tapes, with uneven sound quality.

.

All this being said it was an enjoyable release, particularly the outtakes CD, but far from what you would call a state of the art product.

Please no! I really don't want edits of the big hits on an expanded edition of the album, let alone mono edits. Release them as additional downloads if must so I can leave them alone but don't let them take up space on the physical product!

Digital would be fine, it's a shame they didn't do it with the missing material on PR Deluxe.

Not remastering/rereleasing them at all would be a shame.

These additional edits should absolutely be released on CD format, just not in place of unreleased tracks. The correct option is of course both.

It's a completist thing. I honestly don't listen to those edits much, and don't care for them when I do, but I want a copy of everything ever released by Prince, period. If I could, I'd want to have everything ever recorded by him.

It's a bit like why would I want each and every show of any given tour with a more or less stable setlist when one show would, after all, be enough for my enjoyement (we have all those PR Tour SBD's on boots and I'll probably never listen to most of them again), but if the Estate were to upload all the shows on a website, I'd still get them all.

Conflicting opinions...

Some want them, some don't.

Personally I go digital only so I'm fine with digital as long as they're available. The question, in the end, is whether adding them to a CD set would boost or harm sales, and I honestly have no clue. You'd believe the target audience is hardcore fans who'd want everything, but many fans have said before they don't care for them, so IDK.

I find them an interesting insight into the time period, these would have been what people heard on the radio if the song was played back then. At the end of the day these are retrospective releases so it's interesting to hear "this is everything that was part of the campaign to sell the album to the public."

Sometimes there's additions to the songs, say the single edit of I Would Die 4 U without the segue into Baby I'm a Star.

Sometimes it changes the vibe of a song, the 7" edit of Let's Pretend We're Married loses that huge buildup and goes straight into the song, it's a bit startling.

Other times i'm just putting song on a playlist for a friend or myself but don't feel the need to have a 10 minute song and kind of wish the single edit was there.

Then there's the completionist angle, and the sheer "why the fuck not?" of it all, cd's aren't expensive, we're talking pennies on top of the price for an additional cd.

Like I said though, not at the expense of new stuff, that should be a given.

If they do release 1999 Deluxe and do it properly (at least one but preferable two discs of outtakes), I’ll probably buy at least 10 copies of the thing lol.

.

The "deluxe" angle is that it is the definitive version of that album, including all the extras that already were and more. So all versions of singles released with the album should be part of it. And indeed, there are some interesting bits that come with the edits. See also the guitar part at the end of the edit of Hello that is not on the extended version, or Kiss! That funky wah is not on the album and not on the (amazingly good) extended version.

.

A deluxe version should be able to serve many people at once: the completists, the new master wannahaves, the people that want the story/stories around the album and those that want more tracks from the era (and the video people and the people interested in live music and the people that want new pictures from back then, and..... and.....)

If done right I'd buy all possible formats of a DELUXE EDITION.

People have covered most of the reasons, but here's another reason why I like single edits:

I listen to full albums at work, but at home, it's mostly iTunes shuffle playing in the background of whatever I'm doing. So for the album versions of the singles, I've selected 'skip when shuffling' so that I only get the single edits coming up. That way, when I do put the full album on, it's more special because I'm treated to the full versions of the songs. It's not for everyone I suppose, but I do enjoy that extra little thrill. cool
