Interesting. I saw it more as him developing rather than "losing his edge" and really appreciated that the drums sounded like DRUMS and that I could picture most of the material being played live. Micheal B (and later John Blackwell) made a big difference in his sound (Shiela too). Overall, his bands kept getting better and better, I think for the best.

The rapping is unfortunate, and plagued Love Symbol as well, but I chalk this up less to me not liking rap but more that the rap he used was shit.

A guy (or gal) who could actually RAP would have improved those tracks that feature it tremendously.

It's aged in a more unfavourable manner than I could have predicted as someone that found his stuff in the 90s. At the time I thought it was a really good album and made his 80s stuff sound dated - not so much anymore. The same goes for the symbol album, although at least the symbol album is "crazier" and still has more appeal to me due to that factor.

The middle section of the D&P album sounds like there'd be too much filler included to my ears now. I know that Prince albums from the 80s and 90s really didn't have fillers. He could have always included the great unreleased songs that he had written earlier, simply updated some of the synth and drum sounds and they would have worked out well. So, I'm inclined to think that songs like "Walk Don't Walk" or "Jughead" were included because it was the way Prince wanted to "present himself" at the time.

I also remember it was "an early 90s thing" to include a certain number of "non-hit" type of tracks to balance out the more chart-friendly material on your albums. For example, Michael Jackson included tracks like "She Drives Me Wild" and "Can't Let Her Get Away" on Dangerous. Those two tracks certainly didn't have the obvious, "global hit" type of a sound to them as did "Black Or White".

In 1991 Prince and Michael Jackson sounded the closest to each other than earlier. I've always thought that they really don't sound that much alike in general - despite the frequent comparisons by the mainstream media - but during the early-90s, yep, there were definitely similarities there.

btw, Prince's MTV awards performance of "Gett Off" is just atrocious to me in retrospect (then again, so was Jackson's lipsynced TV performances for MTV from the same time). I really think Prince did go in the right direction with the TGE era stuff when he started playing more guitar and doing less corny dance moves with hired dancers on stage.

However. If you would like to showcase the whole prince repertoire for a total newbie. I mean a real, real newbie. Wouldn't you agree that the Arsenio Hall 1991 performance is the easiest watch? He dances like a pro, plays the guitar, run through different genres all awhile looking stunning in an mainstream, pimped out, Hollywood setting. SOTT is too long to show. And some people just want to see bragging rights, flash and money. Prince had all this plus his great showcase of artistry.

I honestly don't know anymore what would be the easiest introduction to a newbie.

Yeah, the stuff he did on stage himself. For example, during "Kiss" or "Lovesexy".

I have hard time believing the dancers in the 90s (or the Twinz later) were doing moves choreographed by him. It was probably just stuff done by professional choreographers. It doesn't reflect the edge of his music in any real way to me. The same I could state by the stuff choreographed by Mayte.

by 1990 w the Game Boys he was doing more dances that were club popular. He also did a few moves that were very Michael Jacksonish in the mid 90s

Yes, I was of legal age. I actually turned 21 in 1991 and there was Prince offering us Diamonds and Pearls, with a generous helping of Cream and showing us how to Gett Off. I had a whole lot of fun. It was a very enjoyable era.

Prince(r.i.p.) also had another double platinum success right after emancipating himself from WBR with his debut as a independent artist with the triple cd set "Emancipation". I say that's a successful feat in itself.

tons of artists have made huge comebacks, nothing unusual about that. As far as two equally creative periods? hard to say, i love much of springsteens later work, lots of Elvis' later work but they definitely didn't have the zeitgeist during those periods. Prince had a lot of good work, i can't say i actually "hate" too much of what he did.
