I love the one for "Crimson and Clover." I suppose they were going for a futuristic look with "CB" but I never really got the concept or Prince's role in the video. Cool to see it again though. Thanks darkroman!

It's funny I remember that Madonna interview in the 90's forgot which magazine, but she said for an artist of Prince's caliber, his music videos are really uninspiring... It's true, he had a few classic videos which due to his aura simplicity was made it classic... But honestly, the majority of his videos are really bad... Especially if you compare it to his peers at the time like Michael, Madonna, etc...

I'm glad he spent most of his time on the music instead of the videos.

Crimson is one of my favorite videos of his. Sexy, with lovely visuals.

I hate the song. Maybe I've always heard versions that raked on me. I think Joan Jett did a version that I despised. But Prince really made me love his version. I was truly hesitant when I saw it on the tracklist back then. But ol' boy pulled in me.

Regarding feeluupp's comment: For Prince's cheaptastic approach to videos, "Chocolate Box" is fair-to-middling, at best. It's like the outtakes of a superhero movie crossed with "The Knowledge" by Janet Jackson mashed into a video.

I definitely agree, and have stated here, that the vast majority of Prince videos are simply performance videos. Really boring, ultimately. Watching "Sexuality" isn't much different than "Uptown" or "1999". Close ups, emoting, pouting, band shots, bright lights - done. LRC is the same, but it's slightly better because it's on film and he's wearing jeans (we wouldn't see him in denim again until 1987/8). Even Purple Rain videos are either big advertisements for the movie, or a performance video. And granted, it was nice to see Prince in concert for those who hadn't before, but after a while - blah. "Raspberry Beret" was fun, but womp womp, we're onto other performances or movie promos for a while. I remember all the hype and fun around Emancipation, then stuff like "Somebody's Somebody" was just a collage of other stuff. Even a bop like "Guitar" leaves little to pull inspiration from. (The T-Mobile ad was arguably more interesting than the video on YouTube.)

This experience will cover courtship, sex, commitment, fetishes, loneliness, vindication, love, and hate.

Agree with you... While many fams will jump to defense stating, glad he spent more time on the music than the video... No one denies Prince's passion and priority for the music... He just always had a not so great visual aspect when it came to videos and promotion... Funny thing is, I bet the biggest budget "video" he ever shot, was probably the Lotusflow3r promo for TARGET... Yes he has a few classic music videos, but in general his music videos were really below his standards, as with many of his album cover art especially after the early 90's... I mean lets not talk that word art font for Musicology.

And Target paid for that advertising. I'd say the bigger budgeted videos were probably "Te Amo Corazon", "Musicology", "Diamonds and Pearls", "My Name is Prince", "Cream", anything with a larger venue, extras, etc.

I mean, if you factor in the cost of the venue when they recorded videos for 1999 & Purple Rain stuff, they could be considered costly overall. Same with SOTT and Parade stuff. But, obviously the more elaborate videos (as some of those named above, and aren't just set against a green screen) probably had a bigger budget. And we're not talking multi-million bucks when I say "big budget". I just mean more than using an already existing sound stage.

I don't mind Chocolate Box, the song. The video is crap but then again, I think 99% of all music videos are crap. The Chocolate Box video looks like a cheap knock off of Sin City. A very cheap knock off. Robert Rodriguez, the man who directed Sin City, used to include little home movies on some of his DVDs. The special effects in those are better than the Chocolate Box video. What really makes me laugh is the "To Be Continued" at the end. Did Prince think this was good enough to warrant a follow-up?

The Crimson And Clover video is another poor one that uses some "flashy" filters to hide how cheap it is. Looks like the opening to a film-school student's take on James Bond.

I know that these videos were only ever made with the intention of being Lotusflower.com exclusives and were never likely to be seen by a wider audience, but even the 4 people who signed up for that site must have regretted their decision when they seen that these were the kind of "rewards" they'd be getting.

I like the song too but the video is kind of hard to follow. Lala Escarzega, the dancer in the video, said in a post on her Facebook that it was originally going to end with Prince taking her hand and walking with her into the next video but it never happened.

The Crimson and Clover video is so badass! I love the psychedelic flair and the footage of he and Misty Copeland each performing. I love the song...the guitar work is top notch.

I like both videos and songs. If you stop comparing Chocolate Box to what Prince has put out early in his career, then maybe you could appreciate it for what it is, just a catchy, fun song.
+
We put him into a Prince box where we only want a certain sound from him which I feel is quite unfortunate. Video isnt ground breaking. But it is fine, love Q-tip in it and the Mayte twin.
+
Crimson & Clover vid is ok too. Luv the psychedelic vibe and Prince looks amazing in it, so whats not to like?

I've always thought that "Chocolate Box" is very fun and catchy. I like Q-tip's rap and I think the lyrics are cute and clever. I was hoping that he would release part two of the video to see where it went from there.

Q-Tip’s not in the video or did I miss him? Is he the guy in it? If so, it’s a bit odd that he doesn’t perform any of his rap in the video.

Yeah Q-Tip is the guy in the vid. Not sure if there is another version of the vid with him rapping in it, I wouldn't doubt it.

At least it's better than actually being silly and cheap and investing in expensive videos to cover up one's lack of real talent.
