Who still listens to Prince albums from start to finish?

I think that albums are important. They are more than a sum of their parts and tell a story (sometimes intentionally as a concept album) even if just as a snap shot of where the artist was from a creative standpoint.

But now I realise that with the ease of accessing music via your chosen device, I shuffle Prince or seek specific songs rather than just pull out an album that I used to listen to from start to finish. I feel like I’ve lost something and succumbed to the short attention span nature of today’s existence.

I need to reboot and listen to albums I think.

Can you relate?

What are your listening habits and how have they evolved/devolved and why?

*qualifying caveat. When a new album comes out, I’m all about the album start to finish again.

I tend to listen to full album in song order most of the time. Granted I do my fair share of skipping around.

I do but usually program it to play in the order of my faves after I've listened to the album a few times.

Oh yes! I did go through a phase of playlisting things but then The Rainbow Children happened!
It's good to have that LP experience and I also have a lot of fun experimenting by putting in extra related material.
Music should be appreciated and approached in an organic way.
Appreciate the artists original vision then have some fun with it.
I made a playlist of Purple Rain material and rejigged the sound using the Audacity program , I even unreversed the end of a certain song! Music should always be alive.
I have no doubt that Prince's music will be covered by new artists and there's nothing wrong with it.
Think about how many different releases of classical music there are! We live in an exciting time when people can create musically much more than ever before.
Embrace it 😎✌❤

99% of what I listen is whole albums. Sometimes in shuffle but most often in order.

I never skip songs.

Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTTs, Black Album, Lovesexy I tend to put on to listen to the entire album more than the others...Parade gets a special shout out as I am listening to the orginal 86 vinyl as I write this... biggrin

Some of them, except the ones where you can do that I'm tired of (Purple Rain, Sott, Parade, 1999)

AoA I can listen to end to end minus the opening track.

I do as well! I usually put on vinyls and let them play until they're done on both sides. I really like how Prince's music on the albums really flows well from one song into the next sometimes.

This. I listen to Prince chronologically from beginning to end, over periods of time, of course, always listening to the entire album with Bsides and unreleased studio songs from that era at the end of the album. And, yes, in some cases, I also replace an album cut with a long version, or, as with the case of "America," I've replaced the album version with the live version from the promo video.

Yes, same here

sometimes I'll mixed live versions of songs in place of all the album cuts

I never seem to care to mix Prince music with any other artist. Every once in a while I've mixed a Joni Mitchell song or a Jimi Hendrix, Led Z or James Brown song that seemed to flow with an album

ie Down To You(Joni) with Parade

but usually it is just Prince music

And mixing in the protege music from the same era helps to tell a movie/story

The bolded part is true for me. But, I have various playlists for Prince related artists, such as artists who influenced Prince, artists who remind me of Prince, and, of course, the list or proteges. But, The Time and Jesse Johnson have their own playlist whereas Shelia E., Wendy and Lisa, The Family, Vanity/Apollonia, and others are combined into a playlist I've titled The Purple Family.
