Ah shit, I checked the movie, not the musicvideo itself.

Then you might want to check the MV instead wink

I CHecked it and it starts with Wendy's first chord on guitar on black screen then fades in and the video just plays like the one on youtube, so no extra sound fx.

Seriously, people don't know there is no Purple Rain video? What you see online are clips from the film. Not videos. Now, any more stupid questions?
First of all, why do you think I put the word video in quotations? Do you understand quotations? Secondly the estate did have this quote-unquote video up before and took it off. Thirdly even though it's a clip why is it on the codfather? And fourthly you're stupid if you can't understand quotations. [Edited 12/6/18 16:54pm]

.

i see quotes around "purple rain". so its more like theres something out there thats questioningly called "purple rain". so yea, whatever dude. lol

OK, so I'm kinda lost. How many versions are we now talking about? 3?

1. The original video I saw on Dutch TV with additional sound fx in teh 80's and 90's.

2. Teh MTV video veriosn without the intro, sound fx and the with 'sound fix anomaly' during the guitar solo.

3. The MTV version with the intro that you saw.

4. The fade in music video on the 20 aniversary DVD.

I always find this performance in Purple Rain very odd - but in a cute kinda way!

It's funny that Lisa and Wendy give Prince a very basic instrumental demo which Prince then goes on to create a finished masterpiece with fully arranged vocals and orchestration. Even Wendy looks rather shocked when Prince anounces that it is to be performed.

However, how do the entire band know what to play and sing! But surely they hadn't heard it before.

Maybe they heard Prince playing it in the bathroom!

wink

Damn! eek

I wonder why and how this happened!

.

I'm just confused about what the difference is between 4 and 2, then?

What I understand here is:

.

1. Dutch / No intro / Full sound fx

2. MTV1 / No Intro / Less sound fx

3. MTV2 / Intro / IDK about the sound fx but it's the only one with the intro anyway

4. DVD / No intro / Less sound fx

Number 2 doesn't fade in after Wendy's first strum on guitar like the DVD version and the sound is a but muffled but fixed during the guitar solo, but essentially they are the same only the DVD version has upgraded the music sound quality wise.
I would like a cleaned up versiopn of the Dutch TV version, without the extreme film grain and dust specks and with the contrast corrected.
Maybe someone who has the workprint version of the movie could compare that version with these musicvideo versions.

Now it's over 100 million views! Uff da.

If there's an ad before the video does that mean it's monetized?

I've already replied to this above.

In a word: no. It's not that easy in 2018 to just upload someone else's property, monetize it and make 10,000 bucks (which is the very best you can expect for 1M views). YT's algorythm isn't perfect but it's designed to catch short snippets in a spoken video, so it's very unlikely that this one has slipped through the cracks.

YT will get the ads dough, and probably share it with Controversy Music and NPG Records as well, thanks to the Content ID option.

You, however, do not need to see those ads, if you use an adblocker.

OK Thx.

I'm a bit confused, particularly since Princevault/Uptown only acknowledges one version of the video (the one from the DVD, admitedly).

If we assume the one on YT is from the movie itself, it may or may not be similar to my MTV version, making it a possible 5th version.

Do you actually own any digital recording of either versions 1 or 2?

O.K. Got i.

It IS pretty amazing that just in the past two weeks since this thread started it went from 97 plus million views to now over 100 miillion views. So, at the very least it gained over 2 million views just the past two weeks; over a million a week; or a pace of 4 million views a month.

And since the video has already been online 32 months that means it didn't have this pace previoulsy or else its views would be over 128 million; odd since viewership typically seems to decline after a video first "debuts."

I wonder why people are watching this moreso now? Something Princely?

Oh wait, my math was completely wrong, basically one can expect (and that's a BIG maximum estimate) 1 dollar/1000 views.

So 1M = max 1000 bucks, but since we're talking 100M = we're talking a potential 1M, which is HUGE.

If the Estate is not allowed to upload it on their own channel, their best interest is to benefit from this "wild" upload.

.

As for your question, no one truly understands how the algorythm works, but it's possible that YT suggested it a lot more to random users lately, for God knows what reason.

Now over 101 miliion views. This one is suddenly burning up.

Now compare that to any of the estate videos?

Someone in the estate needs to wake up.

No I only have those on old VHS tapes recorded from TV specials on Prince from the 80's and 90's.

So a mere month and days after this thread started, Purple Rain "the video" has now streamed an additional 7 million ++ times has now topped 105 total million views!

This is the mystery I want to get to the bottom of.

How is it that other popular Prince songs like "When Doves Cry" get NOWHERE near this many views and other videos on his channel don't get 1 million views in a year!

Is it all just YT directed people to it for some mysterious reason?

Is "Purple Rain" the song just SOOOOO much more popular than every other Prince song?

I guess this mystery will never be solved.

Come on, it's clear that the Codfather is Prince (it's practically the same word as Prince if you remove a few letters and add other ones).

Well, I'm surprised nobody else has come out with shit like that yet.

Purple Rain is Prince signature song, so everytime somebody wants to listen to Prince, they view that song.
It makes on million views a week, the same average for two years.
.
WDC has 36 millions views, in one year that s huge. PR video has 2 years old, don't forget that.
.
The real mistery is why Kiss is only at 16 millions. On Spotify, this song and Purple Rain passed the 100 marks.
