I am a bit confused about how many versions exist.

I am told the version on the PR anniversary edition DVD is without the spoken intro but I'm sure when it was aired on MTV Europe in the early 90's, it included the spoken intro about the song being by WéL and so on.

I am also a bit confused about the sound fx differences you mention: you mean those sound fx are on the Dutch TV version but not on the YT version discussed here? Are those sound fx in the movie? And does the Dutch TV version contain the spoken intro?

.

As for why the video isn't on the YT channel I would assume it's because it's the property of WB films (being a scene from the movie), and the Estate won't pay them royalties (or can't even upload it at all for legal reason). It has, however, been used as a promo video on TV ever since 1984, WB or not.

I haven't checked the anniversary DVD in a while but the version on dutch TV I saw ever since the 80's is a version with heavy film grain and specks, so I assume it was a promo lifted from teh movie, I can;'t remember what it sounded like when I saw it in the theater back then tho.
The dutch tv version doesn't contain the intro it just starts with Wendy's guitar then Prince walks to the mic and you hear his heels clicking and the chains rattling on his coat when he walks.

When he grabs his guitar when striking a chord you hear a click as if a ring clicks on teh body of the guitar. That kind of sound fx.

OK thx. Sounds to me like the same verion that's on YT but without the intro (I actually checked and realized that yhe one on YT is the same one as what I used to see on MTV, spoken intro included).

I can hear sound fx on the YT version, even after the song begins.

I'd say both available versions are straight off the movie, unless you know of yet another version where the sound fx were removed.

.

So to sum it up we would have 2 promo video versions:

- One with the spoken intro, that was aired on MTV Europe circa 92-93 ans that's on YT.

- One without the spoken intro that's on the DVD and that's also aired on Dutch channels.

.

Or did I miss something?

If it is, in fact, the property of WB films, why would they let The Codfather sell it off as his own "video" with almost 100 million views and it being the very first thing that comes up when you put "Prince" into YouTube?

Because they never bothered to check and/or ask for its removal. WB film has to deal with a HUGE catalogue of video footage. Besides, the Codfather isn't "selling" it, it's very likely the channel wasn't monetized. There are thousands of videos on YT (probably more than thousands, in fact) that violate someone's copyright but are not being removed.

.

There are proper ways of doing things when running an official YT channel on behalf of a company that itself handles intellectual property, the basic principle being to try not to upload anything that violates other people's copyright. It's not about being caught, it's about playing by the rules. If the Estate isn't supposed to upload it, they probably won't.

.

It's either that or whomever is running the Prince channel forgot to upload the song, anyway. I can't think of any other explaination, and the former sounds a little more likely to me than the later.

Well it's an impossibility that they never bothered to check; put "Prince" in and bam! Number one every time.

The estate DID have the actual "Purple Rain" video up for awhile and then it disappeared.

So the estate is aware of it and doesn't ask for its removal because they can't put it up on their own channel? And it's good publicity to have "Purple Rain" for people to see? Maybe.

it just seems so odd that they go after every seeming violation of their copyright whether it's warranted or not and this one is just so conspicuous.

The version I always saw on MTV and other music channels didn't have the spoken intro and during the guitarsolo teh sound changed from muddy to clear. That to me was the standard version I always saw on non Dutch music channels.
That version on youtube seems to be a rip from the DVD and is different than the version I saw on Dutch TV because the version in Dutch TV has soundfx of him walking to the mic for the first verse.

I don't recall PR ever being on the official channel and neither does Pvault. I don't think it was ever there. Can you source your claim with maybe an early thread about the channel?

No there's no threads about it. Here's what I KNOW and remember. After they put up other Purple Rain videos it was up on there; you probably know consistency has not been there strong suit; i don't have any idea how long it was up.

But I distinctly remember it because, up until that point, I didn't even think there was a video for Purple Rain. Then, later it was gone.

That's about it.

The Purple Rain-era videos were uploaded July 7, 2017 - here is a snapshot of the page from July 8, which does NOT include "Purple Rain".

Not that this is proof of anything - but from that day forward, the video was apparently gone.

I'm not sure about that? I seem to remember it on there later, but I could certainly be wrong about that.

Since people are interested I'll give you even more information:

It wasn't on the "main" page; even though that really means nothing since there are so many different ways to sort and watch You Tube. It was included in a collection of Purple Rain videos; I never remember it being "featured" prominently on the front page the way other videos were.

When I saw it I was curious because I never saw the "video" before so I clicked on it.

It was not the movie clip.

It was a music video.

I thought nothing of it and only much later did I realize it was gone, as were many of the videos that they put up and disappeared.

But, yes, your honor, it was up there.

I can't think of any possible reason you'd think I'd make this up???

OK, I get it now. What you saw was an auto-generated or user-generated YT playlist that included related vids not on the official channel (you can see some of those, as well as bootlegs, if you check the "playlists" tab on the official channel).

Besides, the only existing music video for PR is from the movie (though it appears 2 or 3 slightly different edits exist), so if what you saw was neither the film sequence nor a live performance, it had to be some fanmade video.

I guss this particular mystery is solved.

So it must have been the intro-free edit, which must have been uploaded at some point by a fan, then taken down. Pity it's not there anymore sad
