Music Prince liked - a Spotify playlist?

Hi all,

I've recently joined Spotify, and am quite enjoying discovering new music. It got me thinking - has anyone compiled a list of music that Prince liked? I found (from searching on here) a short playlist from the New Girl airing, but I was thinking of something along the lines of what he played to other artists, and the stuff he bought at Electric Fetus.

Does such a list exist?

Have Electric Fetus ever said what he bought there?

Would anyone be interested in trying to create one? Is that even possible on Spotify?! (Bit of a noob here smile )

Thanks!

Fi

[ETA - Sorry mods - I think I posted this in the wrong place - I thought I was in the non-Prince music section - please move! Sorry and thank you!]

He shared a lot of music videos on Twitter by various artists. He had interesting picks and I was surprised by some. I created a playlist from the songs and albums he posted about in 2013-2016 and as I kept adding to it,it's now 16 hours long. eek I didn't realize just how many music videos and albums he had shared. He also as was mentioned, made two playlists for Tidal that are still up and he shared a playlist on 3rd Eye TV that can be found on Prince Vault. There was an article about what he bought at EF and you should be able to find the thread about it by searching the org.

Aside from the great recommendations on this thread, I´d say check out that setlist of that DJ who once deejayed for Prince for a night. He said that Prince liked his setlist and even made him play one track several times. (The Ballistic Brothers´remix of Blacker Than Black).

I was thinking recently of the way that Prince would often stay up all night sharing YouTube videos by different artists on Twitter. I found that by typing RT @3rdeyegirl videos and RT @Prince3eg videos separately in the search and clicking 'Latest' that several of his tweets were still visible and most of the links to the videos work. He would usually post a caption along with the link and not type the name of the artist. He shared so much great music and I discovered some artists and albums that I hadn't heard of. Full concerts by Roy Hargrove and Miles Davis in 2013 too. Two videos he shared a few times in 2014 were Lianne LaHavas's cover of "Twice" by Little Dragon and "Distance" by Emily King. Also Herbie Hancock's "Butterfly" and "The Lovers" by Les McCann. He was very fond of Laura Mvula and shared her videos for "Diamonds" "Green Garden" and "Overcome" In 2015 he shared videos for "Close The Door" "Look Through My Eyes" "Smokin' Room" and "Pack'd My Bags" by Rufus,Chaka Khan, along with some newer songs "Bite The Bullet" (Melanie Fiona),"Green and Gold" (Lianne Lahavas) "Hey" (KING) "Should Have Known Better" Sufjan Stevens and "The Promise" from the reissue of Tracy Chapman's Greatest Hits album. I saw that he also recommended the albums 'Ask Rufus' by Rufus, the reissue of The Pretenders 'Pretenders' highlighting "Lovers Of Today" and "Everglow" by Coldplay. Two songs that were regularly played during DJ sets at after shows were "It Takes Two" by Rob Base,DJ EZ Rock and "Bustin' Loose" by Chuck Brown,The Soul Searchers so I assume that he liked them as well.

So, when you’re Prince, what would you have played at one of your legendary parties? The answer to that actually comes from a place you may least suspect.

In 2013, Prince appeared in an episode of FOX comedy ‘New Girl’ in an episode where two if its characters ended up invited to a party at the prolific musicians house. At the time, one of the show’s editors took to twitter and said how Prince had actually sent the network a list of songs that would typically be heard at a personal event of his, for the sake of accuracy.

“City in the Sky,” The Staple Singers
“Country John,” Allen Toussaint
“Fire,” Ohio Players
“Happy House,” Shuggie Otis
“Higher Ground,” Stevie Wonder
“I Was Made to Love Him,” Chaka Khan
“Listen to the Music,” The Isley Brothers
“The Lord is Back,” Eugene McDaniels
“Lost in Music,” Sister Sledge
“The Pinocchio Theory,” Bootsy Collins
“Rubber Duckie,” Bootsy Collins
“Rumpofsteelskin,” Parliament
“Skin Tight,” Ohio Players
“We’re Gettin’ Too Close,” The Soul Children
“Wild and Free,” Curtis Mayfield
“After The Love Has Gone,” Earth, Wind & Fire
“Back in Baby’s Arms,” Allen Toussaint
“Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” The Isley Brothers
“Don’t Take My Sunshine,” The Soul Children
“How Could I Let You Get Away,” The Spinners
“I’ll Be Around,” The Spinners
“Push Me Away,” The Jacksons
“Stay With Me,” Shirley Brown
“The Thrill Is Gone,” Aretha Franklin

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Thanks for the article! Yep he shared "F.U.N.K." by Betty Davis,"What's Going On" cover by Donny Hathaway and "Cry,Cry,Cry" by Judith. Also a live performance by Snoh Aalegra,"Tender"(Soul ID),"HiiiJack"(Sza) and "Grenadine" by NATALYA. He also shared live performances from Mother's Finest,James Brown and Ray Charles. I hadn't heard about GNR being played by Rashida and I had no idea he liked their music! The DJs played Digital Underground at some other after parties I listened to. Prince covered "Outstanding" (Gap Band)"You're The One For Me" (D Train) and "Dance Disco Heat" by Sylvester often. At shows in 2011 and '12 "Angel" (Sarah McLachlan) "A Long Walk" (Jill Scott) "Brown Skin" (India Arie) and "On & On" (Erykah Badu) were often played. DJ Rashida has some nice mixes on her Mixcloud. She said in her documentary that Prince wanted to know how she knew about the music she was playing and she said had she been playing the Top 40 she probably wouldn't have gotten the gig with him. He did seem to approve of a few of the newer songs though since some were played at the PPAD parties.

Thanks pinkcashmere23!!...I also remember...Liz Phair , Pixies ! ( with a joke included about the resemblance of the drummer with jon bream lol ..if I remember correctly ...) TV on the Radio..

He also posted a party playlist or something back in the NPGMC days, anyone have that laying around ? All I can remember is it had the track 'Chameleon' on it..

I would love to see this!! I searched for it but ...

You're welcome! I didn't see those that you mentioned but I saw his tweet about Field Music's "The Noisy Days Are Over" posted seemingly in reply to someone saying that he should go to bed. lol Some of the lyrics are "why don't you go to bed like everybody else?" I recall the joke about Jon Bream Lol. I also saw that he shared the trailer for 'JACO',the doc about Jaco Pastorias, the videos for "Mia Bocca","Bonafide" by Amalia and a live performance by Lizzo. Someone here said that while in Melbourne for the Piano & Mic shows he bought a cd copy of Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew." I came across an article on EW from 2015 where Prince talked about his ten favorite artists at the time: www.ew.com/article/2015/0...-artists-/ I would love to see that playlist from the NPGMC days too! I found a thread on the org about a four cd set titled 'WNPG Original Playlist' with the songs that Prince listed in the ONA Live booklet. It seems it was available to the members of NPGMC. This thread has the playlist for all 50 of Prince's Purple Picks for Tidal: www.prince.org/msg/7/438142

Nikk West covering Musiq Soulchild "Just Friends", Victor Wooten covering Stevie Wonder "Isn´t She Lovely" and a song that I don´t remember from Arcade Fire.

You're welcome. Thanks for the link! I saw the Nik West cover and he also shared a song by her that was seemingly titled "You" that was removed from YouTube. I saw the Victor Wooten video as well. I couldn't find much about the cd set from NPGMC that was mentioned and I wasn't even aware that he had released something like that. The person who posted about it said that they loved it.

Yeah I think it was probably released as a bootleg. Here's the thread about it www.prince.org/msg/7/36075 Seems it was a compilation of all of the songs that Prince listed in the ONA booklet. The creator of the thread seemed to be the only one who knew anything about it.

So, when you’re Prince, what would you have played at one of your legendary parties? The answer to that actually comes from a place you may least suspect.

In 2013, Prince appeared in an episode of FOX comedy ‘New Girl’ in an episode where two if its characters ended up invited to a party at the prolific musicians house. At the time, one of the show’s editors took to twitter and said how Prince had actually sent the network a list of songs that would typically be heard at a personal event of his, for the sake of accuracy.

“City in the Sky,” The Staple Singers
“Country John,” Allen Toussaint
“Fire,” Ohio Players
“Happy House,” Shuggie Otis
“Higher Ground,” Stevie Wonder
“I Was Made to Love Him,” Chaka Khan
“Listen to the Music,” The Isley Brothers
“The Lord is Back,” Eugene McDaniels
“Lost in Music,” Sister Sledge
“The Pinocchio Theory,” Bootsy Collins
“Rubber Duckie,” Bootsy Collins
“Rumpofsteelskin,” Parliament
“Skin Tight,” Ohio Players
“We’re Gettin’ Too Close,” The Soul Children
“Wild and Free,” Curtis Mayfield
“After The Love Has Gone,” Earth, Wind & Fire
“Back in Baby’s Arms,” Allen Toussaint
“Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” The Isley Brothers
“Don’t Take My Sunshine,” The Soul Children
“How Could I Let You Get Away,” The Spinners
“I’ll Be Around,” The Spinners
“Push Me Away,” The Jacksons
“Stay With Me,” Shirley Brown
“The Thrill Is Gone,” Aretha Franklin
