Mel B on Prince

For Christmas I got Melanie's new book, titled "Brutally Honest" and started reading it during the holidays. She remembers her interview with him:

I think of the things I have done, the incredible people I have met. People who have passed away. George Michael. [...] Prince. I remember being pregnant with Phoenix and having to interview him at his Purple Palace in Minneapolis. I was in awe of him as an artist, but he didn't intimidate me as a man. He took me round his great big mad complex and showed me his doves and his recording studio. He flirted outrageously and I flirted back. He told me I was incredibly sexy, and I told him he was married and to stop trying to make a move on me. He told me that most of all he liked to laugh. And so do I.

How is her book? If it's good I might have to get it!

I find it not easy to read. For me it's not a book to read in one setting as it's really brutal and doesn't exactly uplift your spirits. It's about her marriage to Stephen Belafonte, about Eddie Murphy and how he was the love of her life and she really seems to suffer from losing him, it's about her drinking and how cocaine was the only thing that kept her going. It's about suicide attempts, sordid sex, and violence, guns, etc.

It's very strange to read every detail of her trying to kill herself and still keep going all night with 200 pills in her and going straight from the hospital back to doing the X-Factor, still with the IV blood dripping from her arm.

Of course it was written in a certain narrative, to sell, and to shock. But still, it made me cry right in the first chapters. Guess it had also to do with Prince. All the pills... I met her back in the day with the girls and although I know that nothing's real in the business, especially not the smiles, I really felt for her.

Now she says in the first pages that she always loved to show off, so one must take it all with a grain of salt but I'm happy that she found some nice words about Prince after that UK interview that she did not so long after the session with him and in which she said some not so flattering things.

Shade? That's bragging. She says she flirted back. So what if she was pregnant, doesn't mean anything.

Thanks CatB for posting, your thoughts on her book are interesting.

I would bet Prince had no idea she was pregnant at that time. It must have been very early in her pregnancy, because she does not appear to be showing at all. Also, Prince "flirted" with just about every woman he thought was attractive - whether he was married or not.

*

Watching that interview, it is clear that Prince is playing it up big time for the cameras. Again, Prince just being Prince, and keeping up with the sexual mystique thing.

Good for her (if she's telling the truth).

.

I've seen that interview, as we all have, and I remember it being sorta cringe-y. He was definitely trying to hit it. I'm actually surprised he let it all out on camera.

.

I love that guy, but for some reason, I like that he got turned down every now and then. Hopefully, it kept him humble.

Face it, Prince was a dog, and was not perfect. He obviously had no respect for his marriage, and would hit on any woman that turned him on, but of course you dare not call him out on it, because he's Prince! rolleyes

I found the interview fascinating. I'm not convinced that Melanie actually turned him down, pregnant or not, as they were BOTH flirting outrageously. (Btw, before today, I never knew that she was pregnant at that time. Perhaps that's why Prince commented on and could not keep his eyes off her "bum" when they were on the playground.) Seems like I remember reading somewhere that she indicated that she stayed at Paisley for at least one or two nights. Was this during the time that M1 had been banished to Spain?

Edited to add that Melanie actually said the following: "He flew me out to Minneapolis and I stayed there for three or four days."

Was the interview the first time Prince and Mel met? Because I always kinda suspected the song Mad Sex to bs about her.

She wasn't only pregnant but also had just got engaged shortly before the interview. She said she was there for work and that "he wasn't wearing any underwear but I was laughing about it cause there wasn't anything to look at anyway".

I wonder where people always get this narrative from. He himself liked to stay in Spain.

He was and he loved sexual innuendo just to see how you react. Prince was a big flirt. He couldn't help but seduce.

Prince had no respect for his marriage or his wife it seems. Love him as an Artist but dude could be a dog, i don't condone this type of behavior.

I believe they did not meet until 1997 when they were both on the set of Top Of The Pops in England. Mel B stated she was a huge fan and she pushed her way into his dressing room to meet him.

He recorded Mad Sex before they met I believe. I always thought it may have been about Anna Garcia. The lyrics imply that he was with the subject for awhile - "we used to have mad sex in the horny morning, mad sex in the afternoon..."

Or you get flak for it from some know-it-alls who can't hear the truth... I'm glad it was you who said it this time. Funny how times are changing. When I shared that he didn't respect Mayte and his marriage... guess it was too soon...

The "narrative" about M1 living apart from her husband ("banished" is my word) is an undeniable reality. And, Melanie might have said that, "he wasn't wearing any underwear but I was laughing about it cause there wasn't anything to look at anyway," but the video of him sitting on that swing with his, er, print on full display suggests otherwise.

And the stud in your mouth turns gold
Till the animal prints u flaunt so lovely
Is full of little bloody holes

Bushy head mulatto breakdown
And your lips got wet 2day
The same damn bird from london

That sounds like Mel B.
