Did Prince have a good relationship with his parents?

I read an article that claimed Prince was thrown out of his father's house at age 12 for sneaking girls into his bedroom.

It seems when Prince was an adult, he had a more protective relationship with his father (who attended the Purple Rain premiere, co-wrote some of P's songs).

I don't know about Prince's relationship with his mother - whether he was on good terms with her or not.

While he seemed to respect his father, they apeared to have a pattern of " on-again, off-again".

I heard he was close to his mother after he became famous and enjoyed her insight; kind of used her as a sounding-board.

Oh come on. You know the story already.

Father appared to be emotionally abusive as hell and momma was seemed preoccupied. In a nutshell, he was product of insecure attachment which explains his relationships, work or otherwise, and power/control issues.

This is the only truth in the thread.

It's like asking, "What do you think Prince's favorite color was?"

Let's agree that from now on, every time someone asks a question we disapprove of on the Org, we reply "According to Tyka it was Orange."

I'm gonna try and practice now.

Hey OP, watch Purple Rain as a starter. Internet is full of stories about your question....once you understand the relationship with his parents a lot about P will make huge sense.

Yes, I've watched Purple Rain. Not the most accurate protrayal of the Kid's/ Prince's parents. Just wondering if it was any different in real life.

Yup - a work of fiction will tell you everything you need to know about Prince's relationship with his parents. rolleyes

OP, Prince became a very good example of spiritual maturity.
What I do know is during his last tour he said, “Forgive your parents”.
Now, we all have our different situations but I believe that is the goal. It can sometimes be a long road depending on what has happened, but we get there if we try.

As for John L Nelson’s co writing credits, that’s likely just Prince helping out his Dad financially.

Exactly Genesia - anyone, by this point, who does not know that the family drama depicted in Purple Rain was mainly fictional needs to go back and re-read/re-listen to Prince's interviews.

*

Folks need to go back and read Prince's 1985 interview with Rolling Stone - one of the best and most honest discussions of his career, in my opinion. Here's an excerpt of him talking about the PR story and his Dad:

*

“That stuff about my dad was part of [director-cowriter] Al Magnoli’s story,” Prince explains. “We used parts of my past and present to make the story pop more, but it was a story. My dad wouldn’t have nothing to do with guns. He never swore, still doesn’t, and never drinks.” Prince looks in his rearview mirror at the car tailing him. “He don’t look sixty-nine, do he? He’s so cool. He’s got girlfriends, lots of ’em.” Prince drives alongside two black kids walking their bikes. “Hey, Prince,” says one casually. “Hey,” says the driver with a nod, “how you doing?”

I think the part about the father not wanting the mother in his 'life' like that(the musical part) is real.
I think Prince duplicated that to some degree

Yes, the emotional tension depicted is most likely real, but not the violence and drinking

Don't forget the entire SOTT period/tour.....Peach/Orange and Black, and his guitar was Peach. Although, Susan Rogers has stated that these were Suannah Melvoins favorite colors at that time, and Prince chose them for the look and tour. The Peach dress was hers before Cat G joined the band. So Prince either already liked the color, or became fond of it while with her...

Peach and Black is one of the most stunning color combinations I've ever seen. It is such a great visual. SOTT is probably my FAVORITE Prince era of his career.
