1000 Light Years Away [...From Here]

so can this be considered a song on it's own? prince vault states it is a track that
was seperately recorded during the W2A sessions.

and it pretty obviously is it's own song imo.

yet since prince tacked it onto Black Muse, did it in essence become part of that
track?

or should it be considered as somewhat of a hidden track? that's actually a pretty
cool idea if such were the case. not a hidden track before the start of the album or
at the end of the album, after the last song. but a hidden track in the middle of an
album.

hmmm

anyway, i like it. Black Muse in itself is such a great track and this one segueing
from it is very nice.

i'd love to hear the W2A album and it's session tracks sometime. let's hope that
we won't have to wait years and years before someone starts to release songs or
albums from the post 1996 period.

still hoping tidal might release W2A, but they're probably going for something
else or a collection of loose tracks or such. who knows. in fact, does anyone have
anymore info about tidals prince album coming next year?

the start of '1000 Light-Years Away' does seem to suggest that the song might
have been longer originally? the first few lines

now that i've got your attention
i think it's 'bout time i mention
the reason why i wrote this song

seem to suggest that there was another verse or something more prominent
to start the song off, instead of the very mellow way it segues from Black Muse.

it's almost as if the part we get here is like a post-middle breakdown part of a
song.

could be speficially recorded that way to stick it on the back of Black Muse or
might not be.

anyway, why do i care so much? i don't know lol i just find it interesting. there
has been a lot of information about these later sessions from morris but i don't
think i've been able to track down every single interview where he talks about a
lot of this stuff. so perhaps he's already mentioned something about this.

Pretty sure that Morris told me that the version of "Black Muse" on W2A is different to the one that came out on HNR2. I think that's coming up in the final part of our interview with him which I'm going to start editing today or tomorrow.

So that might also be the case for 1000 Light Years Away.

Maybe Prince just figured it was too close to The Rolling Stones' 2000 Light Years From Home, but still too good an idea to waste.

so probably they were 2 entirely separate songs and a while after recording
them prince decided to rerecord or remix them (in part) and put them back
2 back without a pause or break.

makes me want to hear the original "muse" now drool

It's on the Their Satanic Majesties Request album. It was a hit for the Stones in the late 60s.

Just started working on the edit, and it's "When She Comes" that Morris mentioned as being pretty different originally to what got released, when talking about the W2A album. But he talks about co-producing a bunch of tracks on the album, like "Born 2 Die" and others so I wonder if he worked on Black Muse/1000 Light Years too....... I would have asked, but we'd already talked for nearly 2 hours and he had to check out of the hotel and head to the airport! lol

I have always liked the positive energy of the 1000 light years ending to the song. I remember when I first heard Black Muse I was liking it and then the 1000 light years section started and really took the song to the upper echelon level. That part reminded me of the Jackson 5, especially the horns and upbeat energy. It would be great to hear it as a separate song too.

you could just sit there for days and questions would keep bubbling up lol

There were at least two different recordings of the song in the vault according to the list compiled by someone who is cataloging some of it's contents. The earliest being 3.11.10 listed as "1000 Light Years From Here" recorded along with "Different Book" There is also a listing for "Black Muse/2000 Light Years" recorded 10.10.10 and one of "Black Muse/1000 Light Years" with John Blackwell but no date. In Prince's last interview with Ebony, I recall him mentioning that "Black Muse" was the oldest song on Phase II but he decided to keep it because he loved it.

It’s my favorite song on Phase II. Elisa once tweeted that she’d love to sing it again with Shelby and Liv. I wish it would have been performed at 2013 Montreux shows.
