Clearing up those lyrics & meanings

I know that since many times for some of his more obscure stuff, it is hard to find the written lyrics. Other times, he seems misunderstood on some of his most famous songs ever.

I remember reading an article where someone was commenting on LRC. They said something to the effect that they liked the song, but used condums..."yuck". Wow, sometimes when he spelled it all out, the masses were still confused. In review, the line is I believe, "she had a pocketful of horses, Trojans, some of them used."

OK, lets think about this for a minute. Did these little darlings not come in a foil type roll, where you could pocket the whole roll if you so desired? Then if there was one "missing" from the roll, was not that one USED? Not the nit-wit idea that it contained latex condoms already used from the night B4 or sometime?

What other songs did you or someone else get wrong? Continue.....

I agree with your interpretation. I always assumed a box of condoms and some of them had been used already. But then discarded, not put back in the box.

Prince did later sing about an actual used condom though. One Of Your Tears, from The Truth album.

Did U get the tape I sent U
I thought it be better in a song
Better than the used condom U sent me
Baby that was wrong

RIP sad

I'd never thought of it that way, but good point. I can see tearing open the individual package without separating that individual package at the perforation from the rest of the unopened roll. So when she pulls them out of her pocket, it's obvious that she's been 'somewhere else'.

When I first heard about it [being about me], it was ’85. And I was not happy. I thought he was being mean. But with older, more mature ears, I hear something different now. That part about “horses,” “Trojans” in her pockets, “some of them were used,” most people took that as condoms, although he never said condoms. And I now know what that is, and so – he’s very clever. He’s very clever, that’s all I have to say about that.

.

Gotta love the "it doesn't mean what you filthy guys think it means, it actually refers to something completely innocent but I'm not gonna say what" BS.

In "When you were mine" he sings this line: "I never was the kind to make a fuss, when he was there sleepin' in between the two of us." That didn't mean there was LITERALLY 3 people in the bed, together, at one time like I've seen some fans say. It was figurative as in she was having sex with this other guy when she was also dating him.

Did you know there was an epic battle over "de-elevator"? I stumbled across this Saturday. LOL, it's pretty ridiculous. Scroll down to the cooments, but the first one is below:

The chords are fine, but could you change 'de-elevator' to 'the elevator'? 'De' isn't even 'slang' like '2 U' or 'R we', it just sounds like someone whose second language is english and can't pronounce 'th'.

I always thought he was talking about real Trojan Horses (yes condoms too). As in she got him thinking that she only likes him and uses that to get him to like her when she really likes everybody. Her "act" is her Trojan Horse. He sees through it, thus the "some of them used" line.

Yeah, in my younger years I couldn't make sense of that one, took it too literal. boxed

What does DOUBLE TIME KICK DRUM in "BREAKFAST CAN WAIT" mean? I may have a dirty mind with what I'm thinking.

How about it sounds like a BBQ native (Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens) that can never pronounce "th" and instead uses a single "t" or "d" in it's place?

Not trying to throw shade at the beautiful fam who are from there, but my ex is from there and could never shake that accent--neither could his family or friends.

I just took it as meaning opened and empty packets, not that she actually carried around sperm-filled used condoms in her pocket. Prince was funky, but he wasn't that funky. ill
