Bluu

It was nice to have a few of you around to watch this with. Hearing "Purple Rain" still makes me want to cry. The ending with the guy in the sky outfit lifted my mood.

.

That was sweet....

Bittersweet. But sweet.

heart U Prince. We miss U.

I have to second that! Great tribute episode to Prince! They even managed to slipped the f word pass the censors by playing Erotic City!

Anthony Anderson in that midriff outfit and heels was hilarious!

Tracee Ellis Ross told a story on a talk show, maybe Ellen? after Prince died. About being at backstage at the MTV (Gett Off) awards when she was 12. Her mother brought him over to meet her and when he turned around and walked away she saw his azz in those pants and blushed like crazy.

I've read that a while back but I don't recall the source and I don't think I was ever sure it was really the meaning P. intended for the song.

i never heard that purple rain was about blood in the sky .. is that old news or is it made up?

otherwise kinda funny ... prince liscensing in full effect ... i feel gutted when they edit the songs like that .. what a tease ... still enjoyable for what it is

David Hill proposes this in Prince: A Pop Life when he discusses the Armageddon aspect of "1999," and C. Liegh McInnis builds on this in The Lyrics of Prince with the notion that the blood from the second coming mixing with a blue sky creates purple (blue and red make purple) rain. And, I'm sure that I've read this interpretation other places as well. It's just that their description of it sticks out a bit more.

Also, I love Black-ish's tribute to Prince. Just the right amount of comedy and passion.

I believe Prince talked about it in a 1998 interview. I think I was just reading it last week.

Revolution membes mentioned the same thing at other times.

Awesome episode, guys! I loved it! My favorite part is either Dre and Bow's Kiss, Junior's Sexy MF, or Diane's Purple Rain!

I just saw it, I teared up so many times. When they spoke so highly of PRINCE, watching the love from the parents try to teach the children. It was so good. You MUST see this episode, all of you!

I teared up a lot too!

I believe they did an excellent tribute to Prince considering it is only a 30 minute TV show.

Rodeo! All those little facts they talk about in the show, fantastic! Now I'm curious about the "real" meaning behind Purple Rain haha... reading

You're right!

I am an Old and I remember hearing America's "Ventura Highway" which has a verse that goes

"Wishin' on a falling star
Watchin' for the early train
Sorry boy, but I've been hit by
Purple rain
Aw, come on Joe, you can always
Change your name
Thanks a lot son, just the same"

Prince used the term "purple rain" AND he also changed his name. But I don't think that song was his muse, LOL.

I love that Prince didn't generally say what a song was about. I like art that's left to your own interpretation.

what about Elvis, MJ, LIttle Richard, Madonna, etc., impersonations, some by other celebs? Why should Prince be excluded?

There's Dread Zeppelin who does reggae versions of Led Zeppelin songs with an Elvis impersonator as the lead singer. Lots of people go to see tribute bands. PBS used to show entire concerts by Beatles & Pink Floyd tribute bands and there were many people in the audience. Phil Collins actually sat in on drums one time in the Genesis tribute band The Musical Box who only does Peter Gabriel era stuff. There's another band who does Beatle songs in a Metallica style called Beatallica and the all women tribute band Lez Zeppelin.

How about IRON MANILOW? The notorious band made out of death metal superstars who do Barry Manilow songs in the style of Black Sabbath? They kick ass!!!

Surely they could have honoured Prince without taking the piss out of him! Maybe this is an American thing that only the American market would get. I can't see this travelling well into other countries where Prince was more successful than the USA.

Very disrespectful indeed.

What does that mean, "taking the piss?" Doesn't translate into American.
confuse

If you mean that sometimes the humor was a bit awkward, yeah, I'd have to agree with that. Even with time, joking still feels weird. Overall though, Blackish is a comedy, so they kind of had to go there. But they did it with love.

I thought Marsai Martin (Diane) was amazing doing Purple Rain. She's only 14, but she clearly studied Prince's movements and facial expressions. She smiled and joked in an interview before the show that she nailed it. Yes, she did. clapping

I thought they did a good job with the outfits and the parent sitdown part was very funny.

I saw Prince "Kiss" video the same day on MTV classic, so that made me a little sad.

Well done Black ish cool
