Honestly the only time he didn’t look healthy to me was 2015/2016. Maybe 1993/1994 but I think that was more due to the makeup he was wearing than anything else.

Yes, the makeup in 93/94 made a difference, but he was also a bit thinner, which may have been a result of converting to a Vegetarian diet in 89/90. Although, I think it had more to do with stress in his personal and professional life back then.

I agree, he didn't look "sick" until 2015-2016. This is what Susannah discussed during her interview with Toure. She said she was worried after she saw his appearance on the AMA's in the orange outfit. She said she knew something was not right.

I actually think he looked OK at the AMA awards. The first photo where I thought he didn’t look right was that New Year’s Eve shot of him getting off the plane to go perform at that private party.

I think he looks frail in this pic with Bria. Really frail.

He does. I always have a hard time looking at pictures of the last 8-10 years. He had times when he looked just thin but then again you'll see pics where he looks so frail.

When I first met him he was thin too. But just tiny. We first saw him from behind and thought "Who is she"? Only then it dawned on us. He really was so petite and even though you know nothing prepares you for the reality. Pictures don't even show how tiny he really was. But back then he was strong. Those pictures from the last years are really painful to look at.

His weight looks fine here, but his eyes and face look tired, sad, and lonely, in particular, during the segment, from Insatiable to Nothing Compares to You.

He looked gorgeous singing Empty Room though. By far his best performance of that song. He was on a mission singing that ione on that night. Watching both shows to me he looks thinner, but in good form. Could just be all of the makeup though...

I remember watching the AMA's that night, and thinking he looked much thinner. Same with watching him on New Giirl and also when he presented the award to The Weekend Very very thin..

His seamstress had to have known that he was getting much thinner, since she made his clothes to fit.

I'm sure, but he was wearing baggier, sort of "once size fits many" shirts, but definitely the pants had to be smaller. His chef stated on the recent 20/20 report that she knew he was not doing well and she was watching him "fade away" as she put it. Heartbreaking, just completely heartbreaking. I really don't want to put blame on anyone, because I was not there living in those moments with Prince, but I still find myself questioning why why why did Kirk Johnson not try to do something for him sooner. It's possible he may have tried earlier though, and Prince may have brushed him off.

Honestly I don’t think he looks any thinner in that 2015 AMA photo than he did at points in 2009. Or heck, 1993/1994.

Interesting I felt like he was once a smoker.
Even though that cig may be for the photo.

I don't think he was a smoker - cigarettes or weed. He hated it. He must have really liked Lisa's playing though, because she was a heavy smoker, and would smoke on stage and in rehearsals. She also lived at his house when she first moved to MN, so she would have been smoking there too.

effect?

I think the cig is just a prop/attention-getter in this photo.

Lisa, during her interview with Questlove, described her first flying to MN and Prince picking her up from the airport in his Fiat. She said she asked him if he minded if she smoked on the drive back to his house, and she said, "he probably wanted to yell, don't smoke!, but he was nice and let me smoke in his car".

Here's his talk about weed in his song The Good Life:

*

Everyday after school, U know where 2 find this brother
Uptown at every movie show, outta my life 2 another
That was the only thing that I wanted 2 do, that was my drug of choice
Left all the funny smellin' cigarettes 2 the American boys

*

I don't think he could have been smoking pot and also putting in the around-the-clock hours for his playing and practicing.

Afshin Shahidi said he was not a smoker and wouldn’t let people smoke anywhere on his property. He joked that the only person Prince made an exception for was Joni Mitchell, though according to Shahidi he did scold her telling her he was concerned for her health. You can see in the picture below she’s putting her hands up like she knows she’s guilty.

2zrztkk.jpg

There was a concert in LA (I think it might have been the Conga room 2008) where Prince complained about people smoking funny cigarettes saying they can do whatever they want in their own house but not in his.

It's crazy that he died of an overdose, not just because he was famously a teetotaler, but because drugs were pretty much a firing offense in the band, right?

Wendy: Yes. Well …

Z: Yes and no. We all lived our own lives. Playing badly was a firing offense! [Laughter] I don’t think he paid attention to what we were doing --

Wendy: But when I joined the band I smoked cigarettes and he was like "Uh-uh, not having it, you have to stop" and I did. And when we were rehearsing for the Purple Rain tour -- I think it was my guitar tech was a cigarette smoker, and even though he didn’t smoke in the arena, he went to test Prince’s mic and just said "Check one-two" into it -- and [later] Prince could smell the cigarette on his microphone. That guy was fired immediately.

But cigarettes were a big part of Lisa’s image, right?

Z: It was a shtick. [Laughter]

Wendy [teasing]: Lisa got away with everything because she was the only one who could play piano better than him. I’ll tell you what it was about Lisa: Prince could play every one of our instruments and pretty much try and kick your ass and do something remarkable that would make you say [to him], "Well, yes, you actually did that amazingly well." But when he’d try and do what Lisa does, it actually sounded bad, because he knew that was a part of himself internally that he didn’t have access to; Lisa had access emotionally to a side of his musicianship that I think he continually tried to reach. He was able to achieve that vocally when he’d push a vocal or when he almost sounded like he was crying, or later when he became a virtuoso guitar player -- over the years, that’s where he shined better than anybody, no one could play like him. But with Lisa, he knew he didn’t have that specific je ne sais quoi. Guys, you know what I mean?

Chris Moon had contributed to some of the early and later Biographies. He had talked a lot about helping Prince create and market his image in the late 70's. However, I don't know if the topic of the color purple was ever discussed back then.

Lawd, make a joke and have all the Org coming at you with Prince's healthy lifestyle,
which I've been aware for thirty years. Oh well, I guess the newbies could use the information.

Still, that is some Mofo dilated pupils I see there. Let's say it was the same day he had an eye exam.
