I think too many people are looking at Prince after all the success and fame and believing a genius means someone who knows everything and doesn't need anyone.

.
Art comes through people and artist find, gleam, draw inspiration from nature fantasy imagination chemistry community family love hate etc
.
I don't understand people resistance at believing people who adored Prince and saw his passion and did whatever they could to help him. That is the part people are missing. The full doors wide open access to whatever Prince wanted or needed to make it happen. Cause hell, none of the people talking against any associate to Prince was there or could do anything. Prince appreciated these people.

Clearly, Prince was inspired by others, but he was most inspired by his own spirit and God. When I hear people trying to take credit for his connection to purple, or the inspiration of his movies/songs then I'm going to say something because the creative process was very spiritual, sacred and private for Prince. These people didn't say these things when he was alive when he could shoot them down. I remember the Larry King interview when Prince could not even remember his former manager's name, but these people inspired some of his greatest ideas? I heard one of his former associates saying that he was the inspiration for Diamonds and Pearls and the inspiration for Prince changing his name to a symbol. People need to stop. I'm going to defend Prince even if others will not.

You really think a genius like Prince didn't remember his first manager's name - and wasn't just saying that for effect?

You seem to believe Prince was like Athena, who was born fully formed from the forehead of Zeus - rather than a kid who was once 16 years old and nowhere in the music business. Prince did have people who guided him and gave him ideas. He paid them back by trying to erase them as he built his legendary mystique.

There is "defending Prince" and there is being willfully obtuse about him.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Come on man, we are talking about 1977... god and soul etc we are all inspired by the world we live in Prince isn't god which everything would come from with no inspiration from other.

How do you know they didn't say these things? Yes they did, and many people just never thought. After someone dies, people have all kinds of memories of the life and experiences with someone 'they' knew.

You know Prince's name, he doesn't know you're. I forget the name of a lot of people I knew at once. How many people did he work with through his life by the Larry King interview?

You're not really defending Prince. Moon Studios did a lot for Prince. What did you do for Prince's career?

Moon did do a lot for Prince. I just think people need to stay in their lane when it comes to taking credit for his creative work. Prince was inspired by many people, but no one person can take the credit for his creations. We are here to protect his legacy and set the record straight. In about 50 years we will all be dead and we cannot let misreprentations or overstatements about Prince go unchecked.

I think you contradicted yourself a bit in your statement. Saying that Moon did do a lot for Prince would justify that fact that he most likely gave Prince guidance and ideas for his style, songs, etc.

*

The fact that he penned the lyrics for Prince's first radio hit says more than enough right there. If it had not been for Moon, Prince may very well have left his studio that day and not met someone who would have pushed for him to get a record deal. Remember, Moon sat in Husney's office for hours everyday for a week before Husney would even take a meeting with him to listen to Prince's demo. And Husney had to create a fictional story in order to get the record companies to meet with him as well.

*

These guys were forward-thinking enough to recognize his talent and drive, and they worked hard to make things happen for him. However, Prince always wanted the facade that he was responsible for every step in his career. Musically, he was, but there were many things going on behind the scenes that were directed by other people., espeically in the beginning.

But you obviously can't (no offense) as one can see by your falling for his remark on Larry King. So best leave it to the people who witnessed Prince becoming Prince.

I think there might be a spesific reason for Prince not"remembering" his first "manager". What trade off did the 16 year old boy have to do with the older man in order to get s chance in the business?
As for UTCM being about Chris Moon. That's just silly.

I didn't fall for his remark on Larry King. I knew exactly what he meant. He meant to diss the person by suggesting that the person was insignfcant to him now. Perhaps, because that person attempted to get more than their fair share of Prince's pie.

More than his fair share?? You mean the guy that created his marketing package to present to the record companies? The guy who finagled his way into face-to-face meetings with the largest record companies, who would otherwise never have agreed to meet a 16 yr old from MN? They guy who arranged for Prince to live in CA in order to record his first record? That guy?? I'd say he deserved his piece of the pie....

You're joking, right?? So, you think Husney just walked into 3+ major recording labels without putting together professional photos, a professional Bio, high level demos, etc??? If so, you're smoking crack. You need to get the book Prince Before The Rain. Along with his early professional photo shots, which were arranged by Husney, there are detailed stories of their dealings with the record companies, meetings, recoriding the first album, etc.

*

You stated that Moon's claim that he should be credited for inspiring Prince to use the color Purple does not make it fact, but YOU STATING THAT HIS CLAIM IS NOT TRUE DOES NOT MAKE THAT A FACT. I'm inclined to take his word over yours though.

Where is the evidence. The colour purple didn't become a significant part of Prince's image before 1999.

The marketing package (AKA press kit) that every artist who was trying to get in at a major record label would have. Do you really think Prince just walked into CBS and Warner with a cassette and a handwritten note that said,

Dear Sirs:

My name is Prince, I'm from Minneapolis, and I'm 18 years old. Here is a cassette tape of some songs I've been working on. Would you like to listen to them? I'd really, really appreciate it.

Your friend,

Prince Rogers Nelson

and signed his name with a heart over the "i" in "Prince"? And then got a meeting out of it?

Get real. lol

Right. Husney knew they would not even give HIM the time of day - he was also a "nothing" from MN as well. He had no credibility in the music business at all. He had never even managed a musician prior to Prince. Husney has stated that he created a lie in order to get Prince in the door. He played the labels against each other, by telling each that the other had scheduled a meeting with them and/or made an offer to them. He knew enough of how to play the game to get them in the door. He also supported and fought for Prince to produce his first record. This had NEVER been done before.

Just because Prince didn't focus on the color purple at that time does not mean it was not something that he and Moon had discussed prior to the 1999 album. It is very believeable that they discussed a color identifier for him. However, as I believe OF4S commented earlier, he had bigger "fish to fry" with his image in the beginning. The smaller details came later. He had to establish himself as a musician and gain a fan base before focusing on the more minor image details.

So what was 'Purple Rain' called before 1999 - 'Yellow Snow'?

The image may not have been perfected but elements were there. Just look at the first performance of the song or his coat in the movie. Purple was a theme.

Obviously, Prince took inspiration from his own thoughts, spirit. feelings, etc, but it is also clear that he garnered ideas and inspiration from those surrounding him professionally, musically, and personally - we have valid statments from many who worked with him on this.

*

I think you are a bit naive and gullible if you actually think that Prince did not remember Owen Husney's name during the Larry King interview. - when he remembered and discussed many other details from that time period durin the same show I have no doubt that was a personal dig twoard him, as they did not part on good terms. Also, I believe that they had some legal issues at some point based on their contract and Prince paying him money owed.

*

Obviously, not everything past associates/friends state is going to be valid or verifyable; however, many of these things have been discussed through the years and documented in Biographies. We also know that Prince wanted to be perceived as a "one man show" - creating and handling everything - so these people stayed "behind the scenes", and were never publicly recognized.

One other note about Owen Husney - Prince LIVED with Owen and his wife for months out in, I believe it was Sausalito, while he was recording his first record. He and his wife were his guardians at that time, and they treated him like a son. No way that Prince did not remember his name......

that didn't happen... Prince didn't need food or shelter just his music
