For me this funky jazzy tune is not just one of the many highlights of the Emancipation album. It is also a feel good track that immediately evokes the atmosphere of the IndigO2 London aftershows as I always played it in my car during the early dawn drive back home, a sound that I have never grown tired of over the years...

Your thoughts?

I love the 'so let me stop line and the guitar line which follows. Breaks my heart for some reason.

[Intro]
(Style) Style, uh!
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Style, dig it
(Style) Style, come on
Uh, style

[Verse 1]
Style is not something that comes in a bottle
Style is more like Jackie O. when she was doing Aristotle
Style is not a logo that sticks to the roof of one's ass
Style is like a second cousin to class

[Chorus]
You got it! - Style (Come on)
You got it! - Style (say what?)
You got it! - Style (Come on)
You got it! - Style (Check it)

[Verse 2]
Style ain't sitting court side with the owner of the team
Style is owning the court and charging them all a fee
Style is not lusting after someone because they're cool
Style is loving yourself until everyone else does too

[Chorus]
You got it! - Style (Come on)
You got it! - Style (say what?)
You got it! - Style (Come on)
You got it! - Style (Check it)

[Verse 3]
Style don't get drunk on a Saturday night
Try to dress up every Sunday morning bright
Style don't get married then break the vow in a year
Style is keeping a promise
Raise your hand you all if you hear me
(Style)
(Style)
Style is not biting style when You can't find the funk
Style is the face you make on a Michael Jordan dunk
Style ain't the jeep you bought when you know your broke ass got bills
Style is letting your lover drive while you talk on the phone and chill

[Chorus]
You got it! - Style (Come on)
You got it! - Style (say what?)
You got it! - Style (Come on)
You got it! - Style (Check it)

[Verse 4]
Bridge
Style is a gold-tooth smile with an attitude
Style is a peaceful wild posting the rude

Style is a non-violent march
Style is an accurate account of what's inside every heart (Style)
Style is not a lie
Style is a man that cries
Style is the glow in a pregnant woman's eyes

What you call that?
Style, I like that
It's about me?

I ain't got no job, but I got style
Style, yeah
(Style) You got it!

Always thought the lyrics were purple clever, and touching and thus heartbreaking
"Style is the glow in a pregnant woman's eyes" "Style is Mayte in the shower"
Loved the frame of reference to famous couples ballin' 'Like Jackie O when she was doin Aristotle" which reminds me of Days of Wild "Like when Dick was fuckin' Liz, before soda pop had fizz"
And as for a different type of ballin loved the reference to the Jordan dunk, the Ali jab and owning the court and charging everybody (like pussy controls lyric where she hires the heffa's who jumped her to work for free)

Musically it was a slow burner for me (rare with Prince songs, I usually get them super quick or never get to like them much - this is rare,) AND NOW, I would put it most times in my Emancipation single disc compilations (I wonder if anybody has posted that idea on the org before, razz)

I want Emancipation on vinyl and blu-ray audio. "Style" is one of favorites and "Joint 2 Joint"

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

I possessed Pince's handwritten lyrics to the song Style for many years. They hung in my office. (not the entire song, just the portion referencing Mayte). I always thought she should have them after HE passed. In July 2018, I had the opportunity to meet Mayte and give her the lyrics. She was very happy and it made me feel like they were now in the "right place".

The lyrics I had were an early draft (I think), since they don't match the final lyrics from the song. But Mayte recognized them and said she remembered Prince showing them to her in their home.

Lyrics I had read:

Mayte in the

shower

That's what

style is

Mayte in the

shower

Style is this is

Mayte

Always loved this song. It's a part of my favorite run of a group of joints on Emancipation that starts with The Human Body and ends with Da Da Da. Sex in the Summer might be my favorite from the album, but that's the run I love the most.

I am fairly neutral about “Style”; it’s just okay to me. That said, those two lines which implicitly and then explicitly reference Mayte stood out to me recently when I listened to Emancipation from start to finish for the first time. He often obscures the identities of his lovers in his songs (The Beautiful Ones, Forever in My Life, Adore, Te Amo Corazon, International Lover, Do Me Baby). It is uncommon for him to explicitly name his love interest or strongly imply her identity, as he does in Style.
.
There is an overtone of happiness throughout the record. I take a lot of what he said to the media over the years with healthy skepticism, but I fully believe him when he said the following in the press release for Emancipation: “The whole process of this record was different. I'm a free man, I'm a happy man, I'm a married man and I'm a clear man. All the tracks on this record are free, happy and clear. Making this record was uplifting for me." That feeling of happiness emanates throughout Style because this song is all about appreciating style in everyday people, things, and situations.

Of course the facts are that plenty of Emancipation was written before Prince and Warners terminated their deal -- https://musicfans.stackex...a/2171/129 .

Oh, and then there are the events of 21 April 1996: http://prince.org/msg/7/424178 .
