That was referencing his syrupy ballad/love songs (ie: The Sun, Moon, and Stars), not a song like this one, where he's essentially saying he's putting up with her crap, because of her wonderful ass smile

Yes, I agree - very sexy groove, but the lyrics are not the best for "wooing" your woman. Kind of on the same leve as She's Always In My Hair biggrin

I had the '84 updated Lisa and Prince version (somebody on here mentioned Wendy too, but I don't think she was part of the updated recording), and I like it, but it's not a favorite. I think it was just Prince having fun and being funny about the dynamic of his relationship at the time. I don't think I've heard the original '82 version.

Princevault credits both Wendy and Lisa on the 84 version. http://www.princevault.co...derful_Ass Is it wrong?

It's been known for 25 years that they "finished" the track, only it was long believed it wasd in 86.

Yes, I haven't heard the '82 version, which I thought was just Prince. I thought it was just Lisa and Prince on the '84 version, which is the one I had. I don't hear Wendy on my version, but I guess she coujd be in there

Lisa is quoted in one of the Biographies - maybe Matt Thorne's? as saying that the updated recording of Wonderful Ass was just her and Prince in the studio having fun singing about their girlfriends' asses. She said that Wendy and Susannah were also known for their "nice asses".

I wasn't aware of that, so IDK. I don't remember what Duane says about it in his book but it'd be surprising if he had missed this Lisa statement. However I'm quite confused by it: there wasn't much of an updated "recording", more like re-editing and overdubbing the original recording: the final version sounds more like a carefully constructed finalization than anything spontaneous. It's be worth finding that original quote by Lisa and check what she says exactly.

Prince & Lisa are co-lead, Wendy background vocals and guitar

I love Lisa Coleman and Prince's connection in general. A very happy song

I'll look for her quote on the song. OF4S says Wendy sang backup, so she may have gone in after Prince and Lisa recorded their vocals. Lisa definitely add-libs on the updated version. You can hear her say "ewwwww" at a point when Prince is singing about "that wonderful ass".

Thanks for finding it. If Princevault, which I believe is cohesive with Duane's book (though I haven't checked) is to be believed she can only be talking about the 1984 overdubs, which the girls were supposed to have been doing on their own, but this suggests Prince was there, too. So IDK, obviously I'm not gonna call Lisa a liar. Duane may have missed this specific interview while finishing the book (the interview was released soon before the book was released, it's possible he took it into account in the upcoming update).

Right, I was just thinking it may be one of the edits in the new updated version of his book. My guess is that either Wendy recorded her backround and instrumental in '84 after Lisa and Prince recorded their parts, or Wendy and Lisa were doing their additions alone on the '84 version. Based on Lisa's comments it seems as though this was all re-hashed in 1984, becuase Prince was not dating Susannah when he first recorded the song in '82.

Easy to overdubs on their own or with Prince. Like when he had Lisa & Jill do some additional vocals on Baby I'm a Star, and they kept laughing.

Yes, seems most of the songs were done like that. Prince recorded his lead vocal alone, and backrounds and/or overdubs were done at another time. Except in Lisa's statement she says it was her and Prince having some fun with the song which makes me think they both were there doing the re-recording. Maybe we'll get clarification in Duane's update, or from some other source.

I think they could have gotten their hands on a bootleg by the late 80's right?? When I first heard the boot of Wonderful Ass, which was more recently, because I was not a bootlegger back in the day, my first thought was, "oh wow, I bet INXS heard this track and took the idea for their song in the late 80's. Now I have go find the song. I was a big INXS fan, even before they blew up in the late 80's, so I immediately thought of their song. But, I guess early senility is setting in, because I can't remember the name of their song confused

The INXS song is called Mediate:

*

Hallucinate
Desegregate
Mediate
Alleviate
Try not to hate
Love your mate
Don't suffocate on your own hate
Designate your love as fate
A one world state
As human freight
The number eight
A white black state
A gentle trait
The broken crate
A heavy weight
Or just too late
Like pretty Kate has sex ornate
Now devastate
Appreciate
Depreciate
Fabricate
Emulate
The truth dilate
Special date
The animal we ate
Guilt debate
The edge serrate
A better rate
The youth irate
Deliberate
Fascinate
Deviate
Reinstate
Liberate
To moderate
Recreate
Or detonate
Annihiliate
Atomic fate
Mediate
Clear the state
Activate
Now radiate
A perfect state
Food on plate
Gravitate
The Earth's own weight
Designate your love as fate
At ninety-eight we all rotate
Hallucinate
Desegregate
Mediate
Alleviate
Try not to hate
Love your mate
Don't suffocate on your own hate
Designate your love as fate
A one world state
As human freight

I will say that, other than Prince's lyric in Wonderal Ass and this song, I have not heard it done in any other song....

It's hard to say in a case like this though, where it could just as well be coincidence. There's only a certain amount of possibilities in the air. A friend of mine had basically written Matrix as a short story 2 years before the movie was released, and I once published a short story just to learn that a few month earlier a famous writer had published a novel with the exact same premise. In this case the concept of making a song with all words rhyming the same isn't a Prince invention, so of all the English language songs in the world it's not entirely insane to assume another song came with the same rhyme by sheer coincidence.

^^^^ True, I guess we can't know for sure, but it is just written so similarly to Prince's rhyming lyric in this song. Almost seems as though they took the basic idea and expanded on it for another message. Could just be coincidence though.

*

Other than the last couple of lines (masturbate, stimulate, stimulate...) the words listed in this song (Prince's song) could be used to make a political statement, and don't seem to connect to the "wonderful ass" theme in the song.

I don't know if most, but basic song could be done with Prince and the band or a few musicians/singers and then later someone comes back in to some overdubs

Like Baby I'm A Star the extra Prince called Lisa & Jill to do some overdubs while he was there.

He'd definately be there at times to make sure he got the right sound he wanted, and he worked the board a lot too.

He did do a lot of studio jamming and experimenting with them and his band then.

...

Duanes' book... is he coming out with an extra book part or a whole new book with updates?
