The released version kicks a lot of ass, I think it could have been a hit had he released it in the early/mid 80's. It is very repetitive, but so are a lot of his other songs that fans seem to love (like "The Dance Electric"). This one is just the right length and has enough changes to keep it fun and interesting

The Wendy & Lisa version is one of my top ten favorite Prince songs:

1. 1999

2. Let's Go Crazy

3. Power Fantastic

4. Dirty Mind

5. In A Large Room With No Light

6. Mountains

7. Adore

8. I Wanna Be Your Lover

9. Splash

10 Wonderful Ass

The 1983 version for sure. Never liked the one on PR Deluxe. Too much of the "typewriter"sound is coming through. In the '83 version it's almost fully overdubbed. A hell lot funkier. It's a dancefloor track. One of my favorite track of his.

I WISH we could get the 9:45 version in pristine quality. sad

It has the Linn Side Stick PREVELANT in it, and oddly the 'extended' part is all *before* the actual song (usually on his extended versions it is after).

There is a 9:45 version?! I need this! What version of the song is it, 82 or 84?

I'm not sure which version it was built from... I just love it. I had a really muffled version (which is probably the one that was circulating)... I've been trying to find a cleaner version ever since.

I found it. I realised I had it somewhere in my computer but found the muddled sound too distracting

Easily a 10, I love that bouncy beat and its a joyous upbeat song, its criminal Prince kept it in the vault. For some reason I always listen to it with "G Spot" - in that case, Prince sitting on that song - "F is for Frustration"

I got plenty good loving for ya baby

Wonderful Ass? That's a Prince song?! I've never heard of it. When I'm done listening to the Purple Rain Deluxe set for the 900th time, I'll have to look for that song.

Love this track but in particular the first version 82/83. The version on Purple Rain Deluxe is great and very cool but the earlier solo version is so so good, the drum programming is incredible. The extended version of this in pristine quality is in my Top 5 wishlist of un released Prince.

Always thought it was overated by the fan base. Its good, but not great. I never gave too much credit to Prince's abilty to quality control his own output, but in his heyday, he got it much more right than he got wrong. This one is b-side at best.

I haven’t compared the released version to the bootleg version back to back. Need to do that stat.

I had the '84 updated Lisa and Prince version (somebody on here mentioned Wendy too, but I don't think she was part of the updated recording), and I like it, but it's not a favorite. I think it was just Prince having fun and being funny about the dynamic of his relationship at the time. I don't think I've heard the original '82 version.

Not one of his best, but I do dig it. I don't understand the hate this song gets sometimes. To me this is the epitome of that classic 80's Prince sound. From the chicken-scratch guitar, to the 82-84 Linn drum sound. Plus it has Lisa on backing vocals. To me it sounds like something that could have come off the album in between 1999 and Purple Rain (if there was one).

For me, "IT" is the replaceable or ejection-worthy track.

OMG, I LOVE "IT"!!!! The sparse arrangement and the beat is fantastic. Love the unreleased version the most, and all of Prince's live versions.

Not a fan of Hot Thing either. Prince was definitely going for the bigger band thing on this record. I don't think the sound of Wonderful Ass would fit on SOTT. It sounds to me like it fits more on the Dream Factory or original Crystal Ball track lists.

I had the '84 vers on a muddy tape back in the day, didn't get the second vers until some years later, so I'll always prefer the '84 vers. I love the track, would've loved it to of been at least a B Side. I dig the music & lyrics.

As usual, I'm stunned to see the Dylan/Springsteen/McCartney fans favoring the inferior original edit to the superior, much funkier and more sophisticated later version eek eek eek

.

For those who may have missed that, it was recently revealed that circa 1990, the track was offered to the folk-punk band Violent Femmes, after they requested a song via Susan Rogers, who was producing them at the time. Afraid that the profanity would prevent them from getting radio airplay, they chose not to record it. Had they kept it, we would have had a strange, Violent Femmes sounding version of it officially released 27 years ago. Why Prince thought of that particular song for a band such as Violent Femmes, whose music was everything but funk, and how the song would have sounded once rerecorded, is very intriguing to me.

That was referencing his syrupy ballad/love songs (ie: The Sun, Moon, and Stars), not a song like this one, where he's essentially saying he's putting up with her crap, because of her wonderful ass smile
