Virtual Reality workout with Prince Music

First a backstory: I'm a 55 year old comptuer programmer/buisness owner who raised 6 children (1 left at home). For many years I went from sitting in front of my computer screen to sitting in front of my TV as the pounds slowly crept up on me year after year. Earlier this year I decided I really had to do something to get me off of my feet for a few hours/day. So I bought a VR system near the end of feburary (HTC Vive). It is so much fun that I immediately wished I had bought one sooner. Some of the games burn calories the equivalent to walking, while others are more demanding. At first I didn't worry about how many caloires I was burning, I started losing some weight just because I was getting off my feet. Then one day I tried a boxing game (Knockout League Boxing) and 2 1/2 minutes of it was so exhusting I had to put the headset down and quit playting. It took a while to catch my breath. I joked with my kids that I have to hit the gym to get in good enough shape for my VR game. But then I remembers, the game itself had training. I did the built in training for a couple of weeks, tried the same fight and I could handle it better.

Then in July I had a physical. Despite all I had done, my physical showed I had the metabolic age of a 90 year old (the max their test whould show). So I've stepped up the exercise aspect of it to the point where I'm now doing at least 60 minutes of VR exercise using games like Audio Sheild, Beat Saber, BoxVR and Thrill of the Fight. The first three burn about 10 calories a minute, the third burns 15 caloires a minute (the equivalent of sprinting). I've now lost 33 lbs and have my metabolic age down to 78. I still have a ways to go. My goal is to bring it down to 30.

End of the back story. Now for the prince part. Some of these games let you play to your own music, they analyze the music and time the game to the beat. Days of Wild Jam in Audio Shield is a major workout. The one I've been playing the most lately is BoxVR. It was designed by sports trainers. I've built a couple of Prince playlists to play/workout to. The first one has Let's Go Crazy, Sign o The Times, It, and Get Loose. The last one especially is a major workout. The second playlist has Hide the Bone, $, FunkNRoll (lotusflow3r version), Pheremone. I like a couple of the built in workouts in the game, but I have more fun and can go longer when I'm doing my Prince workouts. In the 1 1/2 weeks since I switched to primarily using BoxVR, I've lost 2.8 lbs while simultaniously adding 1 lb of muscle. I got a scale that tracks all fo that, plus i can feel muscles I haven't felt in decades.

Has anyone else tried exercising with VR using Prince music? If so, which games are you using and which songs have you found that work well.

Congrts on getting helthier. Loose and Funk n Roll are really burners imo and really get the heart pumping. Havent done VR but on the earphones during exercise here and there. Sign O The Times seems like cool down rest period song to use though.

Thanks - I'm pleasently surprised at how well it's been for adding muscle. I thought I'd eventually have to hit the weight room too, but now I'm going to see how far I can get with VR only. Any suggestions for other songs I should try? I'm going to try Days of Wild Jam next to see if it works as well with BoxVR as it does with Audio Shield.

How do you insert youtube video on here, I want to paste in some example so just how great a workout these games are. I don't know why this site has to work different than every other site I post on.

the most surprising thing to me about VR is there aren't more people playing it. I find it much more enjouyabe and convinient than going to the gym. And there are other games that are just a lot of fun to play.

Here are a few videos of games i use to work out. BoxVR is the one I'm using the most currently. I've now found enough Prince songs that work great in this to go 90 minutes with all prince and not repeat a song. The two that work best for what I'm looking for are Laydown and Loose!. THe one that's the hardest so far is $. That one comes a bit too fast to hit them all. Here's a video of someone playing it with one of the built in songs.

This game, beat saber, is the most popular VR game right now. YOu can't use your own songs with it yet, but they are working on it. Everyone I've had try this one loves it.

They look amazing. I checked and unfortunately they’re not on the PSVR which is what I have.

My concern would be how gross and sweaty the headset would get. How do you find that?

Congrats on getting healthy. Some songs I have on my Prince Workout playlist are Loose, Hot Thing, Love and Sex, The Continental, We Can Fu#k, Peach, Black Sweat, Erotic City, Dirty Mind, Lolita, Head, Let's Work, the gold Standard,
Just some suggestions. Prince is fun to work out to.

THe vive had foam padding and I'm doing two workouts/day. For a while it was soaking wet when I went to do the next one. Kind of gross to put cold, wet, 12 hour old sweat on my face. I solved that part by laying the headset by a fan when I'm not using it. Now it's dry when I go to do it next time and then I wash it out periodically. I do have a vinyl pad I can use instead of the foam when I'm playing with my kids (we take turns) and we can wipe that down with our t-shirt when we switch.

I don't use the vinyl one when it's just me, it's not as comforable as the foam one.

Also, Beat Saber will be on PSVR by the end of the year.

Ooh, great news re Beat Sabre, particularly if you can import your own music.

I think having a blue and a red light sabre would do my geek head in. Am I a Jedi or a sixth!
