Is this a TV ad or an ad for an high end fashion brand?

Is there a difference? High end fashion brands advertise on TV.

That lipstick costs $37US btw.

I haven’t noticed a lot of Louis Vuitton ads on TV. Maybe it’s different with makeup. Anyway I do think there is a difference. Prince was friends with fashion designers and attended ashion shows. Chelsea Rogers video was filmed at a Matthew Williamson show. So I’m not as bothered if high end fashion brands use his music. Now if we all of a sudden start seeing his music in Walmart or food ads...then I’ll probably think differently.

so.....the estate ok'd this?? or they couldnt veto it???

This usage would have been approved by the estate and, as such, could have vetoed the licensing of it.

Except for all the times it was used in ads.

There was a live commercial shot of Little Red Corvette for the 50 year anniversary and promotional tie-ins for his own independent music...what else?

I only remember "Housequake" in some car ad.

Also ‘all the times’ that the ads were so popular that even people who are ‘not a fan’ can recall

I think it sucks and reduces his art to branding but I recognise that they're well within their rights to do whatever it takes to pay their taxes. I'm well within my rights to moan about it as well. If it gets a few new fans they'll be the kind of people who get into music via advertisements, yay, true music fans rolleyes

And yet Prince rarely allowed his "pop music" to be used in advertisements.

Listen, this isn't my hill to die on, I'm not going to start petitioning them to change it but I don't have to like it.

I actually dig it. Prince would dig it. Plus, as laytonian said, I want his music out there... for more reasons than one.

Me too.
In the ad, no one says anything, just a minimalist beautifully shot video of Natalie grooving to the track. It’s brilliant advertising for Prince and his brand.

HA! (now that was funny)

I do remember him using "Guitar" in a phone ad. But that was still sort of a promo for 3121, same with "dreamer" in the Target ad. We're talking, for those who have seen "all the times" songs used outside of promoting his tour or his own album release (or his movie).

I agree, but its a different world now. Prince never wanted to distract from his own performance imagery of his music. Still sad. To me, hearing Al Green and Marvin Gaye selling disposable crap distracts from the music.

yeah he knew it would happen and as he had let some of his music be used in ads even more so...(Tina Turner sang "Baby I'm a Star" for a Target ad and he let Chuck E Cheese use and alter the lyrics of "I Feel For You" for a video in their restaurants.

So it is not like something he was above...

That being said I do not like it...

And they’re going to sell a lot of lipsticks off it at 40 bucks a pop.

Love the ad. The song sounds timeless and classic, and this is like having a new mini-video for the song.

This keeps his music fresh in the minds of the public and can create new fans (just like many songs and uses in movies have done). I will take the risk of overexposure and exploitation, in order to expose, and be able to see Prince on my tv/computer screen in a new context.

Natalie Portman is class too.

The only thing I can think of is Verizon and the Guitar single. But as you say, that was a promotional tie in for his own music.
