Prince George Clinton and Sly Stone

I have read one 1998 interview with Prince and Prince was having negative comments about Sly Stone as a person and he said he only likes music not Sly and one of the main reasons is Sly association with drugs, but on the other hand Prince was hanging with George Clinton and George was famous for smoking weed onstage until recently.so why different attitude about same thing?

You'd have to ask Prince.

George still smokes weed...

George Clinton still smokes weed, but has stopped smoking crack around 2010. Even during his crack decades - 80s, 90s, 00s - GC still managed to clean up enough every now and then to be productive, including a few collaborations with Prince. Sly Stone? Not so much...

Yes, I was listening to “Paradigm” recently and thinking about George’s stint on PP, and started wondering whether there was much of a relationship between Prince and Sly. Apart from Prince’s love of his music (he said in an interview once that he considered “Fresh” to be the funkiest album of all time), I don’t remember hearing much about a personal relationship of any kind. I’ve often wondered whether he attempted to reach out in any way. George and Sly were always quite friendly.

As a person I've always thought that Sly was a complete sweetheart, albeit a troubled and self-destructive one who allowed things to spiral out of control. My guess is that Prince didn’t have much tolerance for chaotic and self-destructive behaviour. There’s a big difference between smoking a bit of weed in a controlled manner and allowing drugs to ravage your life to the extent that Sly has (with all the paranoia and drug fuelled insanity that comes with it). If that was the case then it’s not quality that I really like in Prince - I try not to be too judgemental, and it's the most troubled souls that need the greatest sympathy in my view. As I said, I always felt that Sly was a fundamentally good and idealistic person, but that kind of addiction can take anyone to dark places.

Yes. I know for a fact that Prince tried to contact and record with Sly several times in the late 80s. He also tried to get Sly to perform at a couple of shows in the 90s. But, obviously, Sly rejected any attempts. Not that he rejected Prince and only Prince specifically, he wasn't interested in working with most people at this point.

Strive

Sly is notorious for his partying and roping other people into his chaos. He's still on the stuff and that stuff makes him extremely dark. He's not a fun fuck up to be around like Clinton.

These were his mentors? His world wasn't seriously impacted by their screw ups? They have a good track record? Yeah I'm making stuff up.

never heard P say anything negative about Sly, you'd have to show it to me. Sly was said to be "burned out" ever since I knew about who sly was, that's all I ever heard. And I think it's ironic that Prince is dead from drugs and Sly is alive. I never heard sly was dark, i wouldn't know, he's so low key, the interviews i see on youtube, he seems a nice guy, super nice because his interviewer is annoying as fuck and he should tell him to fuck off.

Anyone else remember the Rolling Stone article from Sept/Oct 1987 that told the story of the latenight gig Prince put on in LA after the 87 MTV Awards? IIRC Prince didnt hit the stage til @ 1am...Sly was in attendance, but got tired of waiting and left before Prince's performance. So, maybe there was some kind of connection?

Make it so, Number One...

i wonder if it was any good, i have his bio, haven't read the whole thing but he doesn't sound like a guy totally off his rocker from what i read. just going by what's been said the last 40 years or so. really was a singular artist, i don't think he gets the props he deserves, he should be equal with just about anyone but he's kinda forgotten.

From what I've personally heard, yes! He was still writing great songs. I don't know why the music is just collecting dust.

Sly is also writing an autobiography at the moment!!

Yeah, I remember this. I've been trying to find the article, but I can't. If you or anyone could post, it would be appreciated. There is also a story about Prince meeting Sly while they were both signed to WB in 1978 or 1979.

I remember reading online that Sly was at a big lavish party for Clive Davis..(around 1998 or 99)..All of the sudden P shows up and makes his quick rounds and is only a few feet away from Sly. People are kind of looking on to see what happens next...and they say nothing to each other. Not even an acknowledgement to one another...Maybe big brother Larry told P too many wild stories about Sly?..Or maybe Sly felt like; "Yeah you little punk..I paved the way for you..I know what you're thinking before you even do it". (lol).

Prince and Larry tried to get Sly to record and perform again sometime in the late 90s but it was a no go and they were ok with it. It was addressed in one of the tv interviews from NPS era.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Yeah, Larry is the reason there was never a true Sly & The Family Stone reunion.

According to Paisley Hillegeist (who worked for both) "Anotherloverholeinyohand" from the Parade album is about Sly and also "Love or $"..."Anotherlover"..includes references from Sly songs "There´s gonna be a RIOT if u don´t make that funky STAND". There is a podcast that discuss this and how close they were to collaborate..

In this forum there were also comments about the song "Everlasting Now" ..about ...SLY

AND...ON SLY´S VAN this ARTIST painted THE MASTERS OF FUNKY MUSIC: SLY himself JIMI JAMES GEORGE & PRINCE

When I listen to Sly or the P, I always get the idea that Prince really didn't do much that Sly of George hadn't done before. The difference is that Prince could do all by himself what George Clinton needed twenty or so musicians for. This doesn't make one better than the other. It just means that Clinton was a great organizer while Prince was a great one man band.

that's what joni mitchell's opinion was, that he wasn't an innovator. he was still a genius though.

I know for a fact that Sly s "manager" ( an honorific Name) reached out Prince After à gig in 1990. Hé told him that Sly was willing and able to make à musical collaboration. Hé gave Prince his number phone.
.
Sly used to call Prince "his brotha".
.
Prince never called back. This "manager" thinks that Prince must have thought it was a joke, because in 1990 everybody thought that Sly was Dead or almost.
.
Larry told Prince horrendous stories about Sly, and yes, Larry hates Sly to death and Will never forgive him.
.
Sly never recorded anything good in the last 30 years. I know there are a lot of spéculations about this "vault" including hip hop/ rap songs, but that s BS. Some of this stuff has leaked or has been released, and it s an embarassing material.
