How crazy did the internet go when Prince died?

When Michael Jackson passed, the internet almost shut down with texts and search engines. I believe Google was temporarily disabled due to exhaustion. It was nuts. Add to it, people were wanting to know about his life, and it got personal a lot.

When Prince died, there were some crazy people typing about him (I don't know why), and saying unkind things about his ex-wife Mayte. In fact, when Mayte released her book about her life with Prince, people got crazy and called her a liar (not true, imo).

One guy I know (he's from America), said Prince's death didn't hit him at all, and he only knew one Prince song and didn't even know the name of it. So I guess reactions to Prince's death was mixed - some were grieving, others were indifferent.

Your thoughts?

Yep. "When MJ died, the Internet broke. Therefore he is superior"

SNIP - OF4$ Listen to "Scarlet pussy" instead and revive your inner horniness. Prince will do that beautiful thing for you. MJ, not so much.

Apparently not, or otherwise he/she would have seen the countless tributes and talks about Prince online, TV, etc....fan gatherings at Paisley Park and elsewhere with folks singing Purple Rain, not to mention buildings lit up in purple all over the world, etc etc etc! Guess he missed it!

Ridiculously stupid thread. The internet did not nearly break when MJ dioed, if anything i remember much more negativity about MJs death than positivity and people making jokes about Farrah Fawcetts wish for all the kids to be safe and so MJ died, and the Tabloids in the Uk had headlines like "Wacko jacko, Heart Attacko".

.

The same did not happen with Prince, mostly polite respect, as Prince had really extricated himself from the public eye in the mid 1990s. Also is this some litmus test of popularity, because I don't recall the internet crashing when David Bowie, George Michael, Chuck Berry, Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher or any other major star dying in the past few years.

Crazy enough to make this site crash. It took a few days for the org to start working again and then it was overflowing with comments by people expressing their emotions, their shock, their grief.

Actually, for the first few days after April 21 2016 there was a lot of media about Prince.
But strangely, it then quieted down for quite some time.
I’m talking about mainstream media. And talk out in life among people.

Certain people though who hadn’t even been following him for years like me were greatly affected though. As well as those who were strong fans all along.

For a long while there was a great absence of discussion about P among the general public. Many of us here couldn’t believe it. I remember googling Prince’s name every day and not being able to find anything new about him. It was frustrating and unbelievable to me. All that would come up was results on “Prince Harry” or “Prince William” and the English royals. lol.

Then, slowly, just as I knew it would, people started opening their eyes to the great musical and human and spiritual being Prince was.

But at first, the constant discussion was just in our circles. And now? The world knows how special P was.

I have to say, some of my family members and others I know who would put Prince down and criticize me for loving and caring about him, they realize now there was a lot I could see that they couldn’t.

Not sure about what took place elsewhere in the world but speaking for the folks living in Minnesota - the internet went down for at least 20 minutes at work (in Bloomington,MN) when Prince death was officially announced.

When Prince went, the Eiffel Tower went purple, and Obama secretly put up framed Prince photos within the White House.

Seemed like many, many, celebrities, artists, and other types of famous people reacted in a much more genuine and emotional way.

Even the "Agent Orange" tweeted.

This is so stupid. MJ died in 2009. You can’t compare the internet of 2009 to 2016.

I have no idea, I was too busy laying in the middle of my bed listening to The Current, or watching Hair repeatedly or doing both at the same time. Monitoring the internet was the least of my concerns.

My MJForum has a page thread to him on its 19th page (15 replies a page) and several pop up threads.

.

So does MJJC community, but they have many fans who are very critical of him and they have a gang of 4 who jump down my throat whenever I mention him. Some MJ fans are really cool and love Prince, most acknowledge him, but a few are real serial haters and are quick to lambast prince fans for hating MJ.

I heard and read the news about Prince then told my boss. I felt horrid and sad, MJJ's death had prepared me beyond the shock. i felt sad and discouraged. I texted two people then did half assed work all day and took a few breaks to leave to the hallways or outside to pace off my disbelief.

MJJs deathwas unexpected and i felt guilty for "knowing for sure he was never gonna complete that 50 show run" i felt sick sad and discouraged. I felt guilty for realistically v doubting him. I had no idea he was being pursued into it. I remember the Iranian liquor store clerk saying in your wrist Hindu ish accent "he must have been smoking crack" and laughing.

Right there i got a mean streak of hatred and defensiveness. I wanted to kick the old man's throat for his racist shit. MJJ could've bought and sold his ass....he bright much more happiness and joy into this world than this addicted tv drenched shithead. I left afyer work to a coffee shop where my band often did night Jams. I had a huge 3 litre bottle of southern comfort in the trunk in case a party ever broke out anywhere.

I think i must have drank half that during the night hanging with those coffee shop associates, the owners son and some gals. I was disheartened and aggrieved for the man. He seemed so defenseless, naive.

I will never know

Prince's death made me aggrieved truly sad and shocked
MJJ made me heartbroken and angry.

Tell me which one was greater? (Sarcasm)

They're BOTH dead. (line from AFTER HOURS film))

I know at my job there were people that didn't really care too much. Others thought it was "just another dead rock star "...but it wasn't the derisionand mock concern I'dheard there when Merle Haggard died (*on his and my own birthday) ... some gal even joked "oh no Merley Haggard oh god no"

The net had people curiously wondering had happened. The org went down with people trying to check in and get updates.(*some believing it to be an official site)

When the info was confirmed by Prince's rep then it went out and the others who didn't know or share in the care found out and asked oh man did you hear about Prince?

Within a day people were listening to Purple Rain. And all my snobbish Prince knowing made me sorta sneer and think "c'mon man you guys don't even know his music" like a guy like Prince would've said (and DID say at STAPLES).

The internet DID break when MJ died. He's arguably the most famous man of the last century, he's pretty much known everywhere you go for his artistry. Don't let your own fandom neglect the super icon that was MJ. Prince was not nearly as famous as MJ, so of course the comparison is quite silly IMO. Prince very much like David Bowie were given their respects, but they did not have the same impact online as did MJ and that's just facts. You can love all of their music and still remain sane ya know... I don't even want to think what would have happened if MJ had passed away lets say 2015... I love MJ, Prince & Bowie and don't see no reason why they should be compared at all.. They were all great with different stories.

1. The first reports that Jackson had suffered a cardiac arrest, then that he had died, came from TMZ.com, a Los Angeles-based celebrity news website. TMZ published: "Michael Jackson passed away today at the age of 50." The Los Angeles Times website confirmed the report at 2:51 pm PDT. The news spread quickly online, causing websites to slow down and crash from user overload.

2. Google initially believed that the input from millions of people searching for "Michael Jackson" meant that the search engine was under attack. Twitter reported a crash, as did Wikipedia at 3:15 pm.

3. The Wikimedia Foundation reported nearly a million visitors to Jackson’s biography within one hour, probably the most visitors in a one-hour period to any article in Wikipedia’s history.

4. AOL Instant Messenger went down for 40 minutes. AOL called it a "seminal moment in Internet history", adding, "We’ve never seen anything like it in terms of scope or depth.

5. Around 15% of Twitter posts–or 5,000 tweets per minute–reportedly mentioned Jackson after the news broke, compared to the 5% recalled as having mentioned the Iranian elections or the flu pandemic that had made headlines earlier in the year.

6. Overall, web traffic ranged from 11% to at least 20% higher than normal.

7. The British soap opera EastEnders added a last-minute scene, in which one character discussed the news with another, to the June 26 episode.

8. During the same period, the three major U.S. networks’ evening newscasts–ABC’s World News, CBS Evening News, and NBC Nightly News–devoted 34 percent of their broadcast time to him.

9. According to an analysis released by the Global Language Monitor, "72 hours after his death, Jackson jumped to the No. 9 spot for the global print and electronic media. For Internet, blogs and social media, Jackson jumped to the No. 2, only trailing the election of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States.

10. Michael Okwu of NBC News outside UCLA Medical CenterStatistics published by the Pew Research Center suggested that two out of three Americans believed the coverage of Jackson’s death was excessive, while 3% felt it was insufficient.
