Morris Hayes talks about The Vault

Hey Purple People,

Here’s an interview I did with Morris Hayes last week where he discusses Prince and his wishes for The Vault.
https://soundcloud.com/ji...-interview

The most interesting stuff is...

* about unreleased Purple Rain era songs that Prince considered his “A material”.

* how amazing the unreleased Welcome 2 America is.

* a fight they had over The Rainbow Children

* how he managed to stay around for almost 25 years!

* performing with Bono in Dublin in ‘95.

Morris is a very cool guy, hope you enjoy!

Jim

THis was wonderful..

I love the way he speaks with such love....

and

LOL..

(paraphrasing)

when you asked about the contents of the vault,

He says that could go on until the Aliens come and get us...

and when you asked what about the Live stuff

Morris says..

aww man...forget it, we will be listening until Jesus comes back

Ps; your voice is so nice...

Thanks for sharing

Great stuff. Congrats.
And I'm happy to note the recording is clear too, easy to listen to.

Thanks for this! adorable when Hayes realizes you were in the audience for the history making aftershow. Interesting to hear yet another person state from Prince's mouth that he 'saw it in his head, then had to get it out/execute it'..all on his own. I'm not trying to derail this, but hearing this from Hayes/Susan Rogers etc..I'm fairly certain Prince was a musical savant. Also given the quantity of output, its hard to argue the point. How wonderful for those such as Hyes who will retain these intimate memories, thanks again for sharing!

I don't understand why the estate is holding back the unreleased albums. I think W2A very well could be complete with artwork and liner notes so it should be easy to just release it.

The estate still doesn't have full control.

Maybe its just not that good of an album to put the money into. I hate to say this but when I looked up the song list of this album on Prince Vault, Hot Summer was one of the songs. That's probably Prince's worst song. I don't think we should get our hopes but too high..one highlight was 1000 lightyears from here--which was eventually released in connection with Black Muse. It would be cool to hear the whole song. It also says When She Comes is a more stripped down version with just piano. We also heard Some Page Different Book (not a bad song, but nothing earth shattering). I love Morris, but I think he might be exagerating the quality of this album due to his involvement.

I love Hot Summer. For me, that song is up there and very far away from those which I would consider his worst.

Really good interview! Kudos for doing and sharing. cool clapping

I liked hearing about how well Hayes could relate to Prince and what tradeoffs he felt kept him popular in Prince's company--personality, feel for music, and timely suggestions. As far as his production skill, I've heard Mr. Hayes's production on King's album--sounds alright!

As we know from songs like Guitar, the album version can be vastly different to early leaked demos or alternate versions. So I wouldn’t base an opinion on a whole unheard album solely on that. Although if the songs are I exactly the same then you may have a point!

Morris said he heard all the leaked bootlegs of the PR era and said this Purple Rain "A material" he never heard before. He was practically begging Prince to release it. What are these songs?

I LOVE Morris! He is so down to earth and was a pleasure to meet. I can understand why Prince kept him for so long...

So Prince, whom fought 4 his first record deal & got it, fought 4 a movie deal & got it, fought 4 freedom from his WB contract & got it, fought 4 his masters & got them.Gets a curable illness & says 2 himself ok, I'm done. "Life is a Box Of Chocolates"

Surprised by his comments on the sound of TRC, I'm no audiophile, but I think it sounds so good
