Underrated

The fact that Prince did so many things so well resulted in him being underrated in the following categories: Guitarist, Pianist, Bassist, Vocalist, Songwriter and Dancer. I think that he is among the best, if not the best, in all of these categories. I cannot think of a voice that I like better than Prince's. I cannot think of a popular artist who was better on the keys. The guitar and bass are no-brainers. An no-one wrote better songs. I'll give you drums and producer since Blackwell/Bland added value and he had some bad side projects that he produced.

I can’t remember where it was but a while ago I read one of those ‘top 50 vocalists ever’ lists and Prince was on the it. The paragraph about him said something like ‘being so good at so many things, it is sometimes easy to forget how good he is a one specific thing’. And it’s true, isn’t it? Maybe he didn’t play the guitar as well as Jimi, sing as well as Marvin or play the piano as well as... Elton John? (can’t think of anyone else right now!). But he was pretty close... and he wrote... and produced...
Edit - replace Elton with Nina Simone falloff

Anyone who knows and appreciates music and talent will know that Prince follows a direct line from Duke Ellington, through James Brown, Jimi, Stevie and Sly. He took what they had, amalgamated it into his own thing, had bags of talent thrown in, not just instrument wise, but showmanship, genre spanning song craft and production. He was a one man phenomenon, the likes the world have never seen before and is unlikely to see again for a while. Underrated, I don't think that's quite the right word. I'd say under appreciated, for the depth of his talent.
