New Musical Express
April 12, 1986

Sometimes it pisses down in April

Next up, 'Girls And Boys' is an adolescent 'Lady Marmalade' replete with "sauce" French bits and set to the beat of 'Take Me With U'.

I remember hearing this on the radio back in 86 right when Parade was released and absolutely loved it. It was better than Kiss imo. I remember thinking it was the 2nd single and going to wreka stow looking for the single and dude behind the counter said it wasn't a single but to just buy the album. I feel in love with the album immediately...but wore the tape deck out rewinding all the time playing G&B over and over. I never understood how it wasn't a single... I really liked Mountains too (still do!). But G&B was the star on that album for me.

This album is part of a group of albums that are unique in US market.

For me the others would be

Lovesexy

Purple Rain

Controversy - Maybe a reach, but this album was life changer.

Dirty Mind

There are many more!

Marie France is a graduate of fine arts from a Beaux Arts School and of liberal arts from the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She has been designing costumes for 27 years, and began her career collaborating with musician-composer Prince, designing his features "Purple Rain" and "Under the Cherry Moon", and his music videos.

Maybe we can play 2day

.

U were on the other end of the room
U were dancing so hard I could smell your perfume
Your smile tells me that we should talk...
On the dance floor, baby
Make that call 4 me
Oh yes, baby - sex and rest
And U won't resist it
U know U'll like that, baby, oh ow!
I will wrap my legs around U, baby
4 hours and hours I want 2 amaze U, baby
Flowers in your bath, love in your sheets
Make love, make love - where will we meet?

nod I agree.Prince made some questionable choices when it comes to singles.

In that case, I wonder if WB isn't responsible? Maybe they felt G&B was too "weird" to catch American audiences? They already weren't hot for Kiss before it became a hit, so maybe they decided from the beginning that if Prince was gonna release that oddity as the first single, they'd follow up with the most radio-friendly song on the record, i.e. Mountains? Then UTCM flopped, Parade didn't sell extraordinarily despite Kiss' success and Prince didn't make a proper tour in the US beyond the short Hit N Run experience, so they decided that Europe was enough for G&B? IDK, obviously Prince was still in a position to force their hand on it if he'd really have wanted to release it in the US, but I suspect they told him they'd rather not and he just let it go. Pure speculation on my part, so don't take it as gospel. I'm sure someone knows how it really happened.

Girls and Boys seems way more radio-friendly to me than Mountains. I mean, Mountains didn't sound at all like anything I was hearing on the radio, and lyrically it's way less general audience friendly. As s simple boy meets girl type song, with some sex, Girls and Boys was way more hit-likely. I'm glad Mountains was a single because if it hadn't been we probably wouldn't have the extended version of the song, but it didn't make sense as a single.

Talking afterwards is easy, but I'm not so sure G&B would be the giant hit as a second single. Very radio-unusual. 'Hole' is more radio-orientated but the chorus is just a tad too weak.
Mountains suffered from a below-par video (that quality!).
I think that perhaps 'under the cherry moon' in an edited version would have been the best 2nd single.

Well, he screwed up the singles even more on SOTT, but the crown goes to ATWIAD, that was raped from all sides. No singles, different singles in different continents, those video's...
