the chain hat and the microphone. was the singing live?

i've often wondered how it was possible to sing live with the chain hat on,
and holding the microphone up to his mouth, through the chanes, moving
about the entire time.

would that even be possible, to hear only him and not the ratling, clunkin'
of the metal to the microphone all the time?

like, for instance, during 'thieves in the temple' as can be seen in the now
out there london performance at earl's court. i'm not sure that singing is
live actually.

so what do you guys think?

Having inspected the hat at the recent exhibition it appears the chains aren't made of metal, but rather some sort of cushioned material painted gold, so it's quite feasible he sang through them without any interference or potential injury.

I think the retail version that was available at the NPG store did at least have hard plastic chains, but the genuine article was different and more suitable for performance.

Whatever, it still looked great though.

aaaah, that would make sense, yes! cool it already seemed unlikely to me
that he wasn't singing live, but i figured since he wore the chain hat only
for a song or two at a time, he might have thought that the style and effect
of it on stage were big enough to then not sing live for just a song.

it would of course also be possible to just check the audio of the different
dates on the diamonds and pearls tour for 'thieves in the temple' but i'm
too lazy to dig up my hard drives lol

so i'm going off of what Operatingthetan said cool

Stacia Lang describes the hat in this podcast. I'm lazy too. : ) As a result, I didn't go back to check, but IIRC, P's hat may have aluminum chains.

hmm, if they are alluminum they would have rattled and clanked quite a bit
and no soundman could tune out all that noise, i think.

i'm gonna have to check the individual tourdates now, haven't i? neutral

still the same problem from a technical perspective though. having something rattle up
against a microphone in a live environment is going to be audible. so how did they work
around that?

Good question!

Also, you can hear Stacia Lang describe the chains as aluminum at 42:00.

My curiosity overcame my laziness, LOL.

The chains are definitely not aluminium in the hat displayed at the exhibition, which purports to be Prince's hat for performance.

Mayte's hat which she wore while pretending to be Prince at the opening of the Act 2 gigs may well be plastic or aluminium as she never sang through them.

if you're that sure, i'm with you. so that then is the reason he could wear it and still sing live.
