POLL: The Very Best of Prince (1996-2001)

Ask any casual or hardcore Prince fan which songs are his best, and the answer will probably be “That’s impossible. He’s got too many great songs.” So, in an attempt to do the impossible, we’re giving you an opportunity to vote on the very best Prince songs from Emancipation (1996) to Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic (2001).

Having said that, leave a vote next to your choices with this criterion in mind:

★★★★★ (Classic)
★★★★ (Great)
★★★ (Good)
★★ (Average)
★ (Poor)

Done.

So many quality songs there. Way more than generally acknowledged.

Done. Quite a fem gems present during this time, but an awful lot of subpar material. If this was until 2001 why was The Rainbow Children not included?

I was thinking. This is only a five year period. If Prince had slowed the hell down in terms of what he released, stepped back and ran the songs by a third party, he could have problem gotten 2 or 3 really good albums out of that period. And two or three great albums in a five year period is what most musicians would strive for. Instead he damaged his reputation by releasing way too much that didn't go anywhere and by bad production. Some of his more profound lyrics and melodies came out of that period but they were marred by production.

One of his worst periods overall, IMO

Lots of 4 star songs intermixed with too many 2 and 3 songs. I know 3 star songs are still good but before this period many of the albums had more 4 and 5 star songs than 2 and 3 star songs.

Nothing. Sadly, he did not produce a single song in this period worth revisiting . Sorry, but it’s true.

Art is necessarily subjective, but to suggest for example, that 'The Love We Make', 'Don't Play Me', 'Comeback', 'I Love U But I Don't Trust You Anymore', 'Beautiful Strange','Tangerine' 'Wasted Kisses' and 'The One' are not worth revisiting is ludicrous. And those are just a few examples, that don't include the archival tracks on 'Crystal Ball'.

Obviously, The Rainbow Children and the NPGMC tracks are missing here despite fitting the time frame, and there are strong songs amongst those also.

Weak period, yes, but with a few highlights nevertheless.
Greatest Romance and Right Back Here In My Arms are worth to mention imo.
But anyway, i don't want to miss those albums/ songs and i loved the output Prince had compared to many other artists.

I’m not trolling - but it isn’t ludicrous. HOWEVER, I did like ‘Don’t Play Me’. But I never play it

Done. Mostly 2's and 3's, then 1's, and a very few 4's and 5's. And i feel like I was being gracious with some of my scores just because it's Prince wink

Seems an odd timeframe to choose??

Whats the thoughts behind it?

Excluded from the poll are Chaos and Disorder and The Rainbow Children, which are two of the best albums within the time frame.

Also, Crystal Ball includes 80s tracks so should this be included???

I’ve already done polls on the other eras of his catalog. Once this one’s complete, you’ll see what the finished product will be.

I’ve already done a poll for The Rainbow Children to HITnRUN Phase Two so there was no reason to include TRC again.

Ok fair enough.

But by leaving out two albums in the years stated you may affect the resutls.

Probably should have stated post-WB 1996 to 2000?
