Prince’s cover of Long Train Runnin’

I believe this was performed at one of the Canadian shows in 2011. Idea might have come from Shelby J. as she’s said she was/is a Doobie Brothers fan. Is there audio of this anywhere? Did anyone here hear it or see it live. I love the song, would be fascinated on Prince’s interpretation of it.

I don't remember hearing that one. If I did, it might have gone something like this:

"Oh, cool! Prince is covering Long Time Runnin on this bootleg!!"

cue the track

"Well, crap! Prince isn't the one singing it..."

More than once I've gotten all excited about a song Prince was covering only to discover it's Shelby or or one of the other ladies actually singing it. Which... is much LESS cool. Just sayin'. lol

Having seen Shelby live, a number of times, I have to say that she does a spectacular cover. Check out the Bird's Basement bootlegs.

I get it but at least Shelby can sing. At the Target Center concert in April I could tell there were a lot of people there not familiar with Prince’s later band members. Everyone I chatted with were blown away by Shelby’s voice.

Just to be clear, I didn't say a single negative word about Shelby or her singing.

I simply attempted to express the disappointment that comes with expecting to hear Prince sing a cover of a song I like only to find out that someone else is actually singing it. The biggest example for me was the first time I saw Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" on a tracklist. I realllly wanted to hear Prince sing it. My disappointment was not (and still is not) a negative judgement of the talents of Shelby or any other of his backup singers.

I saw P perform this at The Conga Room at a benefit show back on february 28 of 09. He killed it as usual & I don't think it was Shelby singing . This was the show he played Dreamer for the 1st time I believe.
