I think it might cool some people's jets if Duane gave us a few examples of the new stuff. I don't think it would give away the whole book, but let us in on a good story that has been added. Just to cocktease a few folks.

On another note, I do hope the sessions that enveloped ATWIAD stuff (that wasn't covered in the PR book) and Parade are covered in detail by someone. My God, that era, plus 1987-1989. Rich.

I think Duane's work is monumental and extremely impressive. Instead of complaining about new information being revealed, we should all be very thankful for his efforts to document Prince's recordings! biggrin

Nobody "has" to buy anything though. I, for, one, am glad that an already great Prince book will be even better with more information in it - and I will happily buy the new version when it comes out.

i will surely buy the updated version...

one suggestion...how about a different or modified cover? the former comic book collector in me would love to see a 'sketch' cover on the second printing...

also, a question...will the updates be easily identifiable, or are they just blended into the existing text where they fit? not that i wouldn't enjoy re-reading the entire book, but for quick reference on initial perusal...are they indexed as updates at all?

thanks for all your work, duane. i enjoyed the book and look forward to the updates.

I complained about the paperback (even expanded) costing the same as the hardcover, and that does still seem a bit strange to me, but the idea that Duane is somehow working people over on this confuses me. What exactly did people want him to do? He didn't rush the first edition without doing proper research--he'd worked on it for years, and shared some portions of the book's information here for years. It's the product of a lot of work. Now, as he's explained, other information and interviews have become available--what did you want done with it? Did you want Duane to just go "Oh well, I've done the Purple Rain book--so I just won't ask anything else about that period, and if someone says something relating to 1983 and 1984 I'll just go "Lalalalalalala I can't hear you"--and if I accidentally learn something, I'll keep it to myself for several years instead of putting it into the paperback edition that it's time to release anyway."

Including the new information in the new edition is the right thing to do. And, since it's incorporated throughout the book, that means rewriting portions, reformatting (I assume) and higher production costs than just reprinting the same book again. I still would like it to cost a bit less than the original, but I doubt that's really on Duane.

As to disrepecting people--nothing Duane's said on here even begins to resemble disrespect.

Exactly. Some of these folks are softer than a wet newspaper.

I just got the hardcover for Fathers Day, haven't even had time to crack it open yet . . . so when I read that there was already a NEW one coming out – one year after the first one – needless to say I was more than disappointed.

It feels like a cash grab, for sure, being done so soon after the first book.

A discount for those who've already bought it is a nice idea - but what might also be nice is to have a Volume 2 run of these books printed. Something that would complement the first book on a shelf, also hardcover, same physical height. Its contents would be only the new stuff. If even more stuff is found later, then do a Volume 3.

Short of that, a PDF of the new content would be appreciated.

.

Yeah sure, rewriting parts of the book so it now expands with 50 pages (an increase of more than 10%!) is a "cash grab".

.

Seriously, have you guys not noticed the abundance of interviews with people from that era about that era over the past year? Be glad that the paperback is updated instead of it remaining outdated.

.

That said, it seems to me that it's inevitable that these kind of books will be out of date for years to come. Who knows what the contents of Prince's vault will reveal. You'd almost need a subscription: imagine a binder full of lose pages, each representing a single day. New info comes out? Publish a new version of that page or even a completely new page (in case of a previously unknown date), which people can obtain to update their binders. Except at that point you're kinda putting out a paper version of a website...

.

A discount for those who've already bought it is a nice idea - but what might also be nice is to have a Volume 2 run of these books printed. Something that would complement the first book on a shelf, also hardcover, same physical height. Its contents would be only the new stuff. If even more stuff is found later, then do a Volume 3.

.

This is an incredibly bad idea. You'd end up with an impossible puzzle of sorts, with one book contradicting another. You'd need to keep three books in print. The third book would mostly be an unwieldy index that is impossible to navigate and frustrating to use. People would need to buy three books, with two of them being outdated to some degree.

.

In a way, Duane's work would be best as a website or a living ebook of sorts, with a subscription model where you'd pay something like $1/month for access. Any changes he does (other than fixing typos) would be covered in "release notes", so you'd know that for instance the entry for date X was updated with a new quote from person Y, or that there's a completely new entry for date Z. But then you run into the problem where one month might see a lot of updates (because he did a very informative interview with a previously silent source) whereas others might feature almost nothing.

.

And the major problem with such a website: it isn't a book. And like it or not, but a book does open doors, does seem more professional, does seem more like an event.

In fact what this shows is that this book was released way too prematurely with lazy research that was not far-reaching enough to do a thorough job.

This has become such a mess and it only covers one era out of FIVE decades.

This should have never have been committed to paper in this digital age.

I'm happy to stick with PrinceVault.com as at least that is indexed, searchable and up-to-date.

Wow! doh!

Prematurely? Lazy research? He worked on and researched the book for decades.

Have you seen how long it is? If it covered 5 decades instead of one era do you know how long it would be?

Some of us are very happy this was committed to paper, regardless of the digital age.

I like PrinceVault, too. So does Duane. However, it does not provide what you mention, weaved into interviews to provide a compelling narrative. It's just facts.

It seems pretty clear you haven't read the book, so, if you don't have it, why you mad at the update?

wink

Now that is a teaser. Was it previously known that Prince recorded a track called 'The Dawn' during this era or is this entirely new information?

The instrumental sounds really interesting. I hope there's more treasures like this in the book, and importantly, Prince's vault!

You are being a tad overdramatic here though to be honest, I would hardly describe a great and well-researched book getting an update with new information as "such as a mess". The original is already a fantastic and well-researched book with cool interviews and the new one will have even more cool information in it.

Apparently this is the instrumental previously known as "A Place In Heaven" (which isn't related to the Dream Factory song).

Anytime wink

I don't remember any issue with the original book. If I notice something on the update when I reread it I'll sure let you know. I fear you'll have to keep updating those books every once in a while anyway.

Now that I think of it though, I think you wrote somewhere in the original that only soundchecks/rehearsals for which the exact date was known were listed, which oddly left things such as the upcoming Intimate Moments/Piano & A Microphone 1983 release out of the book.

Maybe for those undated yet circulating recordings that you wouldn't know where to put in the chronology, some sort of an appendix would be a nice addition. Those unspecifically dated recordings were, I believe, the only thing "missing" from the book.

Thanks for the great work, anyway hug
