What does prince look like in the beginning of ATWIAD?

I know he made the raspberry beret video however this was his first album that doesn't feature his face. I would like to see what he looked like right at the beginning of around the world in a day. Mainly what his hairstyle was like during this period. I heard stories that he dyed his hair blond and then got it cut because it didn't look good. If anybody has any that would be cool.

Since he recorded all of Around the World in a Day before he started the Purple Rain tour, he looked exactly like he did then.

I get what you're saying, he apparently cut it super short literally right after the last purple rain show, you can see his short hair in the 4 the Tears in Your Eyes video which was shot in April 1985, same month as ATWIAD came out.

Having said that, I've never been able to work out the chronology - another story says he bleached it after shooting the Raspberry Beret video, but before reshoots and he wore a wig for reshoots, so that means June 1985 - but why does the Prince drawing on the cover have bleached hair? Did he bleach his hair because he liked the drawing or did he bleach it several times or what?

confusion.

Yeah, I would encourage the OP to read a book. Namely Purple Rain Sessions by Duane Tudahl. He recorded most of that album during and shortly after the Purple Rain came out.

I don't really care what Prince looked like, even with that shitty wig he wore in "Raspberry Beret". (I forget if that was to cover the jacked up blond hair he tried then fried his hair or not, but he also wore a wig for some reshoots of the film, if memory serves.)

Knowing he recorded ATWIAD during the nuclear explosion that was all things Purple Rain, I can see him aching to do something different. He said how the tour itself made him mental because it was so structured and had to be the movie on stage every single night. His push to do something different was already evident in his recording sessions in 1983/4. It's also no surprise that maybe certain songs by Sheila E. or some b-sides have an ATWAID flair to them.

Ah...maybe thats when the photo drawing was created, during the bleach blonde fiasco. That drawing if him makes sense now. Talk about a holy grail pic to find hehe

I suspect it was the next look... maybe inspired by the guy on the cover.

Dez Dickerson had that spikey blonde hair in 1979

Since Sheila E and St Paul had that blonde heighlighted shorter style, being Princ'e lead proteges, he probably had a similar look.

April 7th 1985

The story that I read, which was told by Earl Jones (Jill Jone's) Uncle, who was his hair stylist then, was that he decided he wanted to bleach his hair blonde. After it was dyed he had such a bad reaction to it that his hair started falling out. So, the only thing they could do was to dye it back and cut it very short since the rest of the hair was dead. This is the reason for the very short hair in the Raspberry Beret and 4 The Tears In Your Eyes videos. I'm guessing the blonde hair on the ATWIAD cover was his reference to the short time that his hair was blonde, or just for fun.

The artist who created the album cover took photographs of various members of the band for the cover, but the "character" on the cover in the cloud suit was actually him posing with Prince's guitar. He had blonde hair too, so it's possible that Prince told him to use his hair color, or he wanted to appear as he had looked for a short time with the blonde hair. The actual pictures of the people who posed are online - Susannah is the girl with the Violin, Shiela is the girl laying on her side abvove the wall. Someone - maybe Wendy? - posed for the character with the white hair on the left who's crying. Some are characters from his songs - girl with the Raspberry Beret, etc.

The Raspberry Beret video was shot on June 5th, 1985, so Prince would have dyed his hair blonde between the last PR show in Miami and that video shoot. Would love to see an actual picture of him with the blonde hair - if one was taken before they cut it and dyed it back to black.

idk there is also a story of Prince and Sheila E coming to the studio in their new hair cuts. I forgot when this was.

.

If he had much longer hair with the blonde initially highlights maybe, and had it cut short. Because if it was already short, then Prince would have been pretty much bald if it was as short as the album cover and what Sheila E had. Maybe it looked like Juan Escovedos do on the Romance 1600 album initially.

.

Doug said he finished the painting while in LA during the Purple Rain tour. He had someone replace him for stage setup to finish it. The PR tour in LA was at the end of February 1985. Depending when this happened, if Earl did the dye job in April right before the Raspberry Beret video.

I thought this was in 1986 during the Parade and Romance 1600 era recordings.

I believe Sheila cut and highlighted her hair during the PR tour as well. It was short and very light in 1985. Romance 1600 was recorded in late 1984 and early 1985. It was the second album released on the PP label. By the time of the Parade tour in Summer of '86, her hair was still similar, and Prince was starting to grow his hair, as UTCM was done.

By Summer of 1986, her hair was darker again - at least it was in the video for the June '86 Detroit birthday show. They all changed their hair style and color so much though.....

Sheila said that the girl he was dating at the time didn't like the fact that Prince put Sheila on the cover and she said she somehow ended up with a mustache. She didn't mention names, but that would be Susannah. Jill Jones is the one who posed for the girl on the left who is crying.

It's not a wig - that is his actual hair. It had to be severly cut, because he had a bad reaction to the bleach.

I think Jill Jones is supposed to represent the girl who is crying on the cover (per what she stated Prince had told her),but I don't think the actual picture of the person that the artist used as a guide is Jill. She had short blonde hair at that time. It looks like Wendy posed for the shot. I think the woman to the right of Sheila represents Clara Bow (mentioned in the song "Condition Of The Heart") which Wendy is dressed like in the Raspberry Beret video. That song was said to be inspired by Susannah, and Wendy is Clara Bow in the song. I can't imagine that Prince would have told the artist to put a mustache on Sheila?? Although, it is a bit strange - I wondered why that was done.

Here's a picture of Clara Bow in a similar look that Wendy had in the RB video:

Which girl on the right? The Clara Bow image?

Do we have any photo of Constance Guzman? There are a few people mentioned on albums back then that I have never seen, like the lady that is on a lot of Ice Cream Castles songs(If the Kid Can't Make U Come).
If that was really said, that seems more like a Prince joke.

Yes. That one. Sheila has posted some pics on her Twitter of Constance. She's married to Gilbert Davison. At the show I went to, she was also saying Constance got pregnant on the Purple Rain tour and Sheila and Prince are his Godparents. He plays guitar in Sheila's band now, Mychael Gabriel.

So wait, I'm confused....the woman on the album cover who is dressed in the bikini and open skirt, which is almost exactly the outfit that Clara Bow wore in the pic above, and the one that Wendy wore during the RB video - is supposed to be portraying a girl named Constance Guzman???

I suspect it was the next look... maybe inspired by the guy on the cover.

Dez Dickerson had that spikey blonde hair in 1979

Since Sheila E and St Paul had that blonde heighlighted shorter style, being Princ'e lead proteges, he probably had a similar look.

BTW....love that VERY old pic of the early Revolution! Look at Matt's hair smile

I think Prince's plan to dye his hair blonde may have been him just wanting to "transform" again into something completely unexpected. He did that anyway with the whole UTCM look, but the blonde would have been a real shocker to most people...

Side note: Paul P and Susannah look like they are in a Ralph Lauren fashion shoot. The rest, not so much!!! biggrin

The real question is who is the female that posed for the mosaic background that looks like hills and a valley but is actually a female lying on her back with her leg part way up? Look close and you'll see an erect nipple. biggrin

Yes, very cool the way the artist did that. I'm guessing he would have had various images at his disposal back then in order to create that shape smile
