What did Prince think of Lady Gaga?

I haven't found much information about P's feeling about Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga was certainly inspired by Prince, in terms of style, music, vision and even stage productions.

I seem to remember that when asked what he thought about her he dodged the question and said he didn’t know her personally so he couldn’t comment. Which makes me think he wasn’t a huge fan...

She plays the piano so I guess that technically er, makes her a musician. She's awful, more akin to Madonna than anyone else, who herself was good earlier on, but let's face it, is pretty awful as well.

That's a really negative assumption. Just because he chose not to comment on her doesn't make him hate her by default. Maybe, because he's busy living his own life, he wasn't paying much attention to her or her music. Maybe she just wasn't on his radar. You even said Prince said he didn't know her personally. Prince wanted to know the people behind the music to know who they were. His comments about Beyonce early on were the same once he met her, complimenting her not just on her voice, but how she knew scales and harmonies, etc. He had respect for her on a personal level. If he didn't know Stephanie one on one, then he was right to dodge the question. It was reporters (and fans who like drama) that dig for that negative soundbite and try to pit folks against each other.

Whether you like her music or not, she is an extremely talented musician and performer. She might not have been on Prince's radar but if she was and he didn't like her, well that's typical Prince. Remember he didn't necessarily like the Beatles either.

Here we go with the hating on LG again. Wow. For people who loved Prince for his talents on any number of musical instruments, how can you not recognize the same talent in LG? She can play a myriad of instruments, unlike Madonna who knows one chord on a guitar (and still plays it badly). LG has a vocal range that is stellar- go look up her singing The Sound Of Music on the academy awards. Go on youtube and watch the videos of her when she was just Stephanie Germanatto and see that the talent was already there. She's going to be around for a long time, folks, so you better get used to it. She created the persona of LG to get the attention that she needed to be the star that she has become, just like David Bowie created his personas to get attention, just as many, many others have done before her. She dedicated her first album to Madonna and Prince.

Knowing how to play a number of musical instruments doesn't mean anything. Anyone can learn to play the piano or guitar. It's not a difficult skill to learn and does not require any sort of natural talent. Knowing how to use the musical instruments to create great music is another thing entirely and I've yet to hear anything from Lady Gaga which suggests she is capable of doing so. Granted, I've only heard her singles so maybe her album tracks are better but from what I've heard, I doubt it.

Prince was never the best guitarist or pianist but he could use these tools to create some of the best, most intricate compositions in the history of popular music. THAT was his biggest talent. THAT is what Lady Gaga lacks. There is no comparison between the two.

As for how Prince felt about her, I would doubt that he held her in high esteem. Artists like Janelle Monae and Esperanza Spalding seemed to be more his preference. He would frequently bring them up in interviews. I've never heard him mention Lady Gaga without being asked directly about her. So, I would guess he wasn't exactly a fan. By that same token, I don't think he necessarily disliked her either. She probably just wasn't on his radar.

She oftens cites David Bowie as her main influence.

Now that's amusing considering that Prince once called both Alicia Keys and Beyonce ''geniuses.'' razz

He thought she was overrated and rode the coattails of other female musicians who laid the groundwork long before her. He also said she actually can't sing very well and that if she tried to pass herself off as a vocalist without production surrounding her it would be cringe-worthy, and that her one-trick pony was just repeating things in the chorus, and the chorus itself, over and over.

I'm not referring to the crazy, outrageous costumes, wigs and makeup. I'm referring to the colours, or lack of, in LG's work. Dark urban streets with seedy night club lights and misty fog, in the middle of the night. Reminds me of the stage production for Sign O' The Times, and the setting for the Grafitti Bridge movie. Even LG's costumes - black leather, lace, pearl string necklaces, cross earrings - all ring 80s Prince to me.

Bowie himself stated that he got into music & created characters as a way to be an artist. To him, music was secondary, the art was the costume, the personality, or whatever was what gave him momentum. So no, it wasn't about attention, it was about what he considered living art.

Gaga can sing, I'll give her that much. But her songs are so pretentious, they're unbearable. Prince took phrases in his life and truly made them interesting. Paisley Park, Uptown, Calhoun Square, Glam Slam are examples. Gaga took something like "I was born this way" and made this quasi-anthem that gays just sucked up like a fresh dick. I mean, we heard it before in 1989 on "Express Yourself". (PS I love that Madonna mashed up those two songs and included "She's Not Me" at the end.)

I believe Gaga uses the LGBTQ community for a fanbase like she's crowdsourcing a GoFundMe. And sadly many of them have bought into it without thinking. And you go and diss Gaga on the term "little monsters" comes frightfully true. Her fans are fucking lunatics. She then comes out as bi, or had a lesbian experience, or whatever. Well fuck Stephaine, I've eaten pussy once when I was 19, but I am about the furthest thing from a straight man you'll see all goddamn day.

I don't buy her "I'm with you gays" routine. I don't throw the word around much because I think people seriously don't know the definition or how to use it, but I believe Gaga is truly fake.

I always quite liked Lady Gaga. Obviously she's no Prince, but she's not your typical lesser talented pop star.

Always thought she did a good live lounge session on radio 1 in the UK. Here's Poker Face, just her and a piano.

Gaga isn't as bad as some on here are saying. She's one of the more talentedmainstream artists of this generation but she's a far cry from being this genuine, genius, avant-garde artiste that many claim her to be.

She's a helluva lot better than most of the other female "pop" stars out there. She can sing, she can dance, and she is a classically trained pianist.
I always thought it was strange that Prince didn't seem interested in her or her work. I think a collaboration of the two would have been cool and/or interesting at least.

The impression that Prince thought she was okay, but nothing extraordinary. He also said that when she tried to do a 1980's drumbeat that she didn't quite get that right. He was try to school with out being to outright judgmental. This has to be somewhere on the web,no?

Yes. She got $8.50 for it. Which isn't a bad price for selling an imaginary thing to an imaginary being. I'd have taken half that for my soul.
